Jurassic World officially opens June 12, 2015. Even more crowded.

More crowded yes. But again SW would not have to worry as much about that. It is interesting to see where this shuffle will go.

2015 is definitely looking like one of, if not the best year for movies.

Judging by how major studios are scheduling their films, you'd think it was the only year for movies.

In total SW films in BO have made around 4.277 billion dollars all six of them.

In toys alone SW toys have brought in 12.107 billion dollars.
The books, video games, licenses, and other misc SW merchandise has brought in an additional 6.065 billion dollars.

So up to 2011 SW merchandising has made LFL 18.172 billion dollars whereas the films just 4.22 billion Now it's not chump change of course the films are very important, the merchandise is useless with out. But my point is Disney wants this train to start, and the merchandise always sells the most when the films are in full effect. Almost 80% of the money made from SW is not from the films. I did not include the DVD/Blu's in that either.

Disney won't mind losing a few hundred million for the first of their SW entry. Even in that competitive market SW will still dominate, and make way over a billion dollars itself. The most money will be made that Christmas and beyond. It will be 2015. Because they don't mind if they lose a little bit with the first film. Why? Because it's a huge opportunity cost to wait another year just because they might lose a little on the film because of heavy competition.

So ya they want the SW train to start, and they have been working on this since summer 2012, it's more than enough time, and competition is not really a worry with them. Because SW is not just the films, it's also everything else. More-so than most franchises out there...if any.

EDIT: My source is Forbes FYI.

yeah, unless the new movie makes the Prequels look like Shakespearean masterpieces, there's no way the new SW franchise isn't going to be a profit juggernaut for Disney.

Exactly, and II have a feeling they will be good films. They've got great talent behind it. So I think Disney will be doing just fine financially. Even in a crowded market space. (that is if they chose summer still)

Is that money generated or money LFL actually received?

Have no idea, regardless it is still a ton. And the percentage is about the same. I did read they make more profit wise off of the toys etc. The point is over 75% of their revenue is not based on the Box Office.

if you think about, Disney really is in a no-lose situation. they're in control of 3 of the top money-making "franchises."

Marvel
Star Wars
Disney Princesses

I remember a few years ago, I saw a Bloomberg report saying the Disney Princess line was the #1 money making franchise in terms of merchandising.

personally, I'm waiting for that ultimate crossover fighting game..........Disney Jedi Marvel Warrior Princesses...........

To add to that Marvel Studios have already booked May 6th 2016, and July 8th 2016. No matter where SW goes there will be competition, but the name SW is very strong. So there is really no worry about that.

I'd still prefer a Christmas release. There's practically no competition and it would have the market all to itself until March, same with Avatar. And LOTR. And Titanic.

Why don't more studios do this?

I don't know. I really don't. But it seems like the summer option may be back on the table with after what they did to POTC.

SW feels more like a summer blockbuster type movie, though.

Feeling has nothing to do with it though, I know we all have memories of it, but in terms of money it would do better during that time spot no matter what year. I think though the only exception would be Episode VII. Other than that I think they will try to stick to summer.

Maybe it's just because myself and several others have this "epic" view on what the ST will be akin to LOTR in a way, rather than a pulp summer blockbuster. Which I know won't happen but c'mon it would be ****ing awesome

For lack of better news : http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=108814

Bad Robot Upgrading LA Facilities for Star Wars: Episode VII

Back in June, it was confirmed that production on Star Wars: Episode VII would be setting up shop at Pinewood Studios in London, continuing the tradition of the series' production in the country. Since then, rumors began to spread and were seamingly confirmed by director J.J. Abrams, that he was unhappy about the location and wanted to shoot the film in Los Angeles.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Abrams' production company Bad Robot will be upgrading its L.A. facilities to accomodate at least some work on the film, including shooting and post-production. The upgrades are said to include "a green room, sound studios and other new facilities."

Set to feature a script by Michael Arndt, Star Wars: Episode VII is rumored to focus on a new generation of heroes and could feature appearances by Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford in older incarnations of their beloved characters from the original Star Wars trilogy. It is aiming for a 2015 release, although no specific date has yet been named.

I don't really care when EP 7 comes out, as long as it has a great story, great characters, and cool force powers and lightsaber duels.
