I think Spider-Man 1 and 2 deserves its score and this is coming from someone who has watched them recently rather than riding the wave of nostalgia. I absolutely prefer those movies to BB and I don't care who that upsets that is my honest opinion. And I absolutely prefer those two movies to Unbreakable (which has a disasterous spell it out ending) and Rocketeer (which I love). I'd also take Blade (pre 2005) and Crow over many of the modern superhero movies.

Same with the films of Lean, Kurbrick, Capra, etc. People still watch "Gone with the Wind" because it is awesome.
The effects and visuals brought the genre to new level and made it stand out, as well as the take on mixing sci-fi and fantasy. Make that movie today and people won't care as much. Vader isn't really built up more than Malekith, to tie the discussion a bit more to what should be the subject, but people focused instead on that he was cool. Of course the movie has quality, but it's not like the acting stands out much, the story is the standard fairy tale, etc.

I like several old classics, but I also think several of them have been done better later in movie history. If you see a good movie inspired by a classic before you see the classic you might have a different reaction than if you saw the old one first. Previous experiences will play into it. You can't be bored or desillusioned of a genre, or a theme, if you haven't seen it before.

An inelegant misfire, this is a chink in Marvel's otherwise solid armor.

They are mad if they think this is worse than Iron Man 2 or 3.

Yeah, I don't think MS will make a movie as bad as IM2 in a long time. It's their "SM3" I'd say. Thor 2, while disappointing, is better than that.

When the US critics put their reviews up on RT for the Marvel movies the % usually drops, as is happening here. I just hope not too many more top critics give it a fail. I really don't want it to drop into the 60's.

Isn't that normally the case for every superhero movie?

Well everyone has their preferences. I adore both Unbreakable and the Rocketeer whilst I can't imagine ever wasting my time with another Raimi movie for as long as I live.

It's all in flux right now since they changed up the release paradigm. We used to get this stuff first and so our critics weighed in first. Now? Who knows.

It will make a ton of money regardless. But you're insane if you are thinking it is going to make 200 million over the weekend.

Agreed. It was a fun film. Certianly not perfect but far from the worst of the Marvel films.

You jest, but I think you actually touched upon something. I suspect that some critical hatred comes from backlash against the huge success of CBMs, as epitomized by Avengers. The fact that Avengers defied the established wisdom that you had to go dark and serious and realistic to be good doesn't help.

Honestly, (and this is coming from a huge Avengers fan) I think the critics gave the good reviews in regards to Joss Whedon, not for the movie itself. They have their favorites and will give them high points no matter what.

I am not saying 200 million its first weekend, although it will exceed 100 million easily.
I am saying the following weekend of week 2 is when the combined numbers exceed 200 million ....

Consensus! Habemus Papam!

It may not be the finest film to come from the Marvel Universe, but Thor: The Dark World still offers plenty of the humor and high-stakes action that fans have come to expect.

There's a number of negative reviews from folks who don't normally review these type of films. But I'm going to be surprised if this does end in the 60's as most have said it's better than the first.
