I have never seen anything from this series. What am I missing? How was CK and Lois portrayed? What were the story lines like - Sci-Fi, Social well being? Post crisis//pre-crisis? Any Batman visits? Any info from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

this iss post crisis, Lex is a billionair industirial list. It uses the theme from the superman films. It has a mixture of both social and sci-fi story lines plus each episode had a 5 min segment of CK growing up in smallvile. It was done during superman's aniversery.

IMO, probably the best superman incarnation on the small screen.

Thanks Kakarot069 and GenZod. I have been scouring the net for a while now as well looking for these episodes. Watching them again brought back alot of memories. I had forgotten about Lois and Supes taking their flying trips like in the movies, that was fun to see. And to hear the John Williams type music in the background. I don't know if it's my display or the actual cartoon, but has anyone else noticed how dark the red is on Supes costume--in some shots it reminded me of the new SR suit's red.
One gripe is I did not remember Lex's voice being so high pitched--I definitley like S:TAS Lex voice better.

The 1988 cartoon series was great for 80's animation. It was based on John Byrne's Superman revamp. Marv Wolfman was story editor. The show was critically acclaimed but was cancelled due to low ratings after 13 episodes. It was only on Saturday mornings on CBS. Remember this was the era of the Smurfs. It would be fun to see the 1988 Superman series released on DVD.

I've never seen the show but Supes certainly is better drawn than the caveman jaw line of the 90's Superman.

Kak, I can't thank you enough for putting this link up. I vaguely remembered this show from when I was younger (I was REALLY young when the show actually aired). I remember being so excited whenever it came on! Anyway, thanks a bunch!

Oh yeah, I think you are right about that 61 Suberboy series...

Yeah, I'd like to see these (amazing just how much they got Supes to look like Chris Reeve)

This cartoon series kicks so much ass.

A friend of mine picked it up bootlegged (sp?) at Wondercon. I tried for years...

IMO, the best character designs for Supes. Th animation quality of STAS was great, but I love the look of the Ruby Spears one.

Does anyone know why it only lasted one season?

Two questions:

-Wasn't the series only 13 episodes?

-Why are all of the links only opening to the MegaUpload homepage for me?

I've heard that it was an expensive show to make because DC charged alot of $ to use the character (I could be wrong).

Yeah I really hope they put this show out on DVD, it was really great!

I finally managed a fan made copy of the entire 13 episodes of this little seen stage in Superman's history.

First off let me say that most Saturday morning superhero cartoons from the 80's were mostly fluff like Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends, Incredible Hulk and The Superfriends but they were cool for kids growing up the 80's who didn't want to see Smurfs, Punky Brewster or Alvin & The Chipmunks.

It was the syndicated cartoons where the real meat & potatoes of hard hitting action packed toons ruled the airwaves like Transformers, G.I.Joe, HeMan which were not tied up by network practices.

Now after seeing the long forgotten Superman cartoon by Ruby Spears which I thought produced some real classics like Centurions and (yes maybe even that silly Rambo cartoon), I have to say that this Superman is better left forgotten.

The tone of the series is a far cry from the 90's Superman TAS (which I still don't like) and is more in tone with kiddie fare which shocked me since only two years previous DC comics had just revamped Superman. First lets start with the bad: The storylines are too juvenile (basically Luthor starts a scheme and Superman shows up) and Clark Kent is still portrayed as the Pre-Crisis wimp who has to find an excuse to become Superman, Lex Luthor is portrayed more like Gene Hackman saying funny quips and voice actor Michael Bell (G.I.Joe, Transformers) sounds more like his Riddler voice from the Superfriends cartoon.

The good part is that they kept a slight variation on John Williams theme music but the background music seems recycled from the Centurions, Superman's design is top notch and resembles more like Christopher Reeve and John Byrne's Supes, the Superman Family Album tags at the end of each episode are more enjoyable than the actual episodes. Beau Weaver who voices Superman/Clark does a fine job, his Clark is a tad wimpy but his Superman is heroic without being too Super like Danny Dark on The Superfriends.

Even though it's not a great cartoon I'd still like to see it someday on DVD.
