Regarding Cobie's statement on how WS takes place immediately after, maybe the opening takes place after it and we get a time jump after, similar to how they did with "The Dark World".
It also depends on what the span is presumed to be between the AOS episodes. The show *feels* like it's pretty close to "realtime," i.e., something new happening every week or two, but for all we know, AOS could've opened a couple of months after The Battle of New York, and has now spanned a couple of years' worth of assignments in 8 episodes.

What about real time but a year behind? Then when Cap comes out everything catches back up to the correct date and year.

As I've said before, I think everything Marvel is doing since Avengers happens in "real time." It's just more logical from a story-telling perspective within a shared universe that as things appear on-screen it's on a linear, chronological timeline.

I still feel people are over-thinking this.

Doesn't this movie take place exactly after the events of the Avengers or maybe a few months after?

We've mentioned it elsewhere in the thread, there's a bit of confusion on that point. According to Cobie - this film picks up right where Avengers left off. According to Scarlett - it takes place 2 years after the events of Avengers.

I've said (elsewhere) I'm wondering if it's going to be similar to Thor: TDW in this regard where I had been hearing similar confusion (it picks up right where Avengers left off or it takes place a year later) - both ended up being true. So it's possible the beginning of TWS will pick up with what happened immediately after Avengers but then jump forward in time to 2 years later.

It has to be around 2 years

Agents of SHEILD just had a Thor 2 tie-in and in Thor 2 Jane said it's been two years since the end of Thor 1 and The end of this season of Agents of Sheild ties into Cap 2

The end of Thor 1 was one year *before* The Avengers....
....therefore, along that line, TDW takes place one year after the Avengers.

In other words, pretty close to real time: events of Thor 1, 2011. Events of Avengers, 2012. Events of Thor 2 (and AOS), 2013.

Jane Foster had a 2013 calendar hanging in her apartment, so that says something about TDW's timing.

So what? Thor 2 was two years since Thor, not Avengers.

I think it was stated somewhere though that the events of the Avengers took place an year after "Thor" though, and given that Jane hadn't seen Thor for 2 years and that it's 2013 in TDW, then that would mean that The Avengers took place in 2012 as well.

Time is relative in the Marvel universe.

Tony Stark's birthday isn't going to be 1970 forever.

I don't think people are arguing Thor 2 is set 2 years after The Avengers, but that TWS is. People are suggesting that the movies are following a "real-time" schedule, meaning TWS would be set in the time of its release, spring 2014. Which is 2 years after The Avengers.

Edit: To clarify what I mean, people using AoS as a time reference could be correct in this sense. Thor 2 was set in 2013, two years after Thor 1, and 1 year after The Avengers. The AoS tie-in episode would also be set in 2013. However, since this episode was early in the season, and since the TWS tie-in episode is at the end of the season, it stands to reason that the TWS episode will be set in 2014, which would line things up, and give credence to the "2 years after Avengers" timeline for TWS.

I don't know why people are having such a hard time with this. When Jane says she hasn't seen Thor in 2 years, it was 2 years from the original "Thor" movie, not Avengers.

Ok that's some very confusing timeline stuff, I'm of the mindset it basically all happens along the timeline of the movies themselves and AoS takes place between them. That's how it makes sense to me.

Can't wait for this movie though, I think it will be Marvel's best one yet. April can't get here fast enough

I seem to recall someone at Marvel stating that TDW took place one year after Avengers, and two years after the first Thor (Fury mentions in TA that the events of Thor occurred a year previously). IM 3 took place like six months after TA and TWS takes place two years later, according to Scarjo.

Actors make a lot of statements about events in the films that shouldn't necessarily be taken as gospel. Johansson and Smulders may have one idea of the timeline, while the writers and producers have another, official schedule of events. The definitive Word of God on this hasn't come down yet and probably won't until and unless Feige weighs in to clear things up.

Was IM 3 holiday 2012 or Holiday 2013?

Holiday '12. We saw it retroactively from Tony telling it to Banner... ala a few months later.
