Also regarding the devastation, MOS Blu Ray has new info and it ain't looking nice.

To some who said above 100's of buildings? The answer is yes. Look the concept arts and the bird eye views.

In a high rises itself, there are thousands of people. And yet somehow Snyder estimated that only 5000 people must have died.

Like someone said, it was a damage control move by Snyder and he quoted a ridiculously low number in defense.

I feel like the long shots in Man of Steel don't really back up the hundreds of buildings assumption. Are we talking about the Superman vs Zod battle or the Black Zero/World Engine as well?

Yep, still not hundreds of buildings.

Now, I didn't watch the video, but it sounds like 5000 could've just been the first random number that came to mind.

I'm not sure that the buildings destroyed while Superman wasn't around would really matter. He was on the other side of the planet trying to save everyone.

I get that some people are uncomfortable with people dying during Superman's fight with Zod at the end, but that just enhances the 'grounding' to me in a movie about two aliens fighting each other.

Any other examples?
My reply was to your original post. I don't want to bring this down to semantics but, it would help matters if detractors made more accurate statements in their criticism.
It does ring of a bitter sweet irony however, in the confusion we forget that superman actually averted this very world ending disaster.

New parameter: a scene/sequence/set piece in which the world doesn't end and we have survivors so that they themselves can access the damage(interesting but ok)..
I assume at least half of these 'scenes' qualify?
VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

I also assume you would rule out 'post apocalyptic films because even though disaster is clearly present and accessible, it's not actually present in a scene.(Though I'd argue about the Terminator series).

I would add that we really should move past accessing damage by money value. A mountain full of people could collapse at the cost of $0.00 to anyone. Just saying.

For some reason superhero films come with with a particular set of prerequisites in these matters. I imagine in a parallel universe somewhere, Steven Spielberg is being asked to do 'damage control' in questions about War Of the Worlds.

In another universe we blame Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum for the alien's destruction of the world in Independence Day.

The way that I look at is that these storytellers take great pains in building up an opposing threat to job to the hero. If there's no visual demonstration of a potential physical threat then the stakes may not seem as high to the audience.

Haha! One for me, one for Robbie, one for Rachel, and one for the house.

Nah, WOTW was a boss Alien Invasion movie. Spielberg and Cruise did a great job. Awesome movie.

Anyways, I hope Goyer has something good in store for Clois.

Only because the crust was cut offÖeveryone knows the crust is what locks in the PB and J's evil-ness.

Idk...the kids were kind of annoying and the ending wasn't great but overall WOTW is a really good movie IMO.

I think it was a good movie too. Still watch it whenever it comes on tv. I just hated the kids. They were like nails on a chalkboard.
