I think he has a lot of respect for the process of making Batman '89, which he always stresses was very difficult to film.

His recent comments on BatKid were cute, but his abrupt ''Let's not talk about Batman, lets talk about the kid'' was a tad on the snippy side I thought.

But then I think Kilmer and Clooney have just as much indifference to the character.

Im a huge Keaton fan, but i don't think he loves Batman. He's always been a fan but not a massive one. He doesn't really care that much. I believe that Keaton always cared that batman be portrayed in a dark manner, which is how he's supposed to be. He recognizes that. Which is why he didn't return for Joel Shumacher. But i think his knowledge is limited and was more into Tim Burton's version than the actual character itself.

Christian doesn't know everything about Batman either but he genuinely loves the character. He's excited to see what Ben does next. Keaton has only seen a couple of clips from just Dark Knight, mainly of Heath Ledger. I dont even think he's seen Christian in the suit to be honest, or cares, even though he finds Bale and Nolan to be brilliant. Every couple of years Keaton is asked by the press on how he feels about the trilogy and he always says he hasn't seen them. That's been going on since the trilogy began, so he just doesnt really care.

Affleck is probably a bigger fan than Bale, and i think that enthusiasm adds a lot of weight to the character we see.

I guess it's like a Harrison Ford kind of thing with Keaton. Despite their performances of _____ character being generally lauded they still hold very little attachment to the character.

I've always found that kind of reaction weird but to each it's own.

I do remember Keaton saying in an interview that he wanted the third Batman movie to be like Batman Begins. An origin for Batman.

Yeah but that wouldn't have made any sense since he would be in his early 40s. Maybe scrap the origin idea and just do a grittier movie in general. I think Keaton would have returned if Shumacher or another director (Cameron? Fincher?) had done that type of sequel. Joel has what it takes too, just look at some of the movies in his filmography.

The difference is that most people only want to talk about Batman with Keaton. He's never quite been able to get out of the shadow of the character even though he's played good roles before and since. Ford has been a lot more prolific and it's only been recently that he's been bombarded with Star Wars questions because of the new trilogy.

Bale was a successful and tenured actor before Batman and likely will be for the foreseeable future (much more so now). His Batman will be relegated to a specific chapter in his career as it will likely be for Nolan and the franchise in general.

I get that exact impression, too. In all the recent tag along interviews I seen, it's always solely about Batman or is leading into a question about Batman. I don't think he hates the character, but he's probably frustrated about the frequency of it. I find him to be a class act in any case.

Right, he was a bit typecast in the role, but still, that doesn't mean he can't support the Batman franchise...and he could afford to spend a couple hours watching the new films to see how the role he originated has evolved. I sure would, if I were him. At this point, it should be seen as an honor to have played Batman, much like it would be an honor to step into the role of James Bond.

Keaton is like the Sean Connery of Batman films. Many still think he's the best to this day.

Yea Keaton probably just wants more people to realize he's done other movies.

I remember Sir Alec Guinness being a little frustrated about being identified so strongly with SW, when obviously his filmography and performances had so much range and quality.

That part, i can see why Keaton would sound frustrated. But even after Batman Returns he didnt seem enthusiastic. Even talking about making the movie. It's cool to be like that in the press, i get it. But the fact is that he still wont see the Nolan movies, he's just not much of a fan.

How ridiculous... Keaton has absolutely no obligations to see any Batman movies if he doesn't want to.

He made the movies and he moved on... it's as simple as that. Yes, we all wish he was a little more reflective on the character, but I bet 20 years from now Christian Bale won't be so courteous if he's stopped in the street to talk about frickin Batman.

I think Keaton wanted more focus/exposure for his character because lets face it he was eclipsed in both of his movies by the villains.

I personally think he was very unhappy with the sequel. He probably saw the direction BR was going in, but was powerless to do anything about it. He was eclipsed in B89 only because of the nature of The Joker character and Nicholson's star power. But with BR, he was eclipsed further due to the nature of the story and the double villain thing. The focus on the villains and the weird/wacky stuff in the film might have been off-putting to him.

I suppose there is some truth to that... He even described himself as ''the host of the party'' for the sequel.

Michelle and Danny had all the fun/character development while Michael hid behind the Bat-suit for 6 months, trimming more and more of his lines from the script.

Even though he described (Promoted) it as the far superior movie in June 1992... it's clear he doesn't feel that way and hasn't even seen the whole thing. Which is why I laugh when people claim he should have watched Nolan's trilogy.

How can he not have seen Batman Returns when he went to the premier of it?

Sometimes I forget Keaton played Batman in the first place. Not because he did a bad job but because it was so long ago and it feels so detached from the current him since he never talks about Batman, never does or says anything that would subliminally remind you of Batman, etc.

Alot of stars don't actually watch the movie, they just turn up to the red carpet for publicity purposes.

It's very possible that Michael saw snippets of the movie, bit and pieces while recording ADR and the trailer, but yeah according to him he has never sat down and watched the whole thing.

Keaton likes to contradict himself then:

Quote:
It was quite the cast with Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito and everyone. It wasn’t as satisfying to me when I saw it, but maybe that’s because the bar was set so high on the first one. I think I only watched it one time.

I just read some comments from him where he said he'd only seen BR one time and that he wasn't that happy with it compared to the first one, which is probably him "putting it lightly". Google Keaton Batman Return comments to find what he had to say.

To be fair, he's also said he doesn't like watching himself in movies overall. I still think he had more of a connection with B89 than BR, though now he doesn't seem to have much of a connection to either.

Hmm... interesting. Funny how he tends to flip flop on that. Well at least we know he isn't as fond of it as Batman '89.

I mean, I can't imagine getting deep into the psychosis of Keaton's Batman. He and Burton projected him the way he was meant to be seen. detached, dangerous and incredibly introspective. I don't think I would have liked a Batman Begins like approach stripping him bare and shoving ''FEAR'' down out throats, or explaining his reasons.

Keaton's Batman was lost inside his Bat-suit and I don't think he was ever meant to come out. And all Selina did was push him back in further. I guess that doesn't give Keaton much to work with but it was enough for me.

One thing Keaton obviously loves is that "We're grown ups, right?" joke. He's been breaking that out in interviews since at least BR.

I'd buy that. Rumor was Burton's 3rd movie would look more at Batman's origins.

To be fair...some people would say the same thing about Bale in TDK/TDKR.
