Even though the visual effects supervisor was already on, which all but assured us MPC would be involved -- it's officially confirmed.

They're not the leading VFX vendor on the pic though. Have no idea which other vendors are in the mix as well.

The way I remember the general breakdown of effects from MOS goes something like this. I could be wrong. But Weta Digital handled Krypton. MPC handled the battle of Smallville and Superman learning how to fly. Double Negative handled the third act final battle. Scanline handled the tornado and oil rig. Look Effects handled the bus crash.

I thought Double Negative handled the Smallville battle.

An MPC show reel shows the Smallville battle. An FX website talks about MPC doing the Smallville battle too.

I just hope whoever did the final battle stays far, far away from the rest of the DCU. The Krypton and Smallville scenes were far superior VFX-wise.

If WB were smart they'd sign a contract to lock in WETA or ILM for the next few years. Especially with the rumors that many of their films are sequentially coming out within a couple of months with one another.

I really hope they don't use Weta this time around. Or at least, use Weta in conjunction with ILM or another studio.

And yes, they can use ILM. It doesn't matter that they're owned by Disney.

Will the movie be brought to us in living colour?

Don't agree.. While I think Weta and MPC must do all the effects on this, I think it's kind of unfair saying that, due to the difficulty of the final battle (flying fighting, buildings, all of them were really well handled especially the "crater-crash look on Metropolis")
I guess is matter of tastes, but I loved how they presented to us the first flight fight between two characters with that incredible power set with an outstanding results.

I may be a bit dense here, but my thinking is that if Disney owns ILM and Marvel they may likely only let Marvel use ILM, not the rival of Marvel. Ergo, DC using WETA would be the best bet, them being ILMs closest rivals and all.

So, DC = WETA
Marvel = ILM

Its probably not that simple though.

If Disney owns ILM, they are still a company that needs to work, not only for Disney.
But I doubt ILM will be in this.

I dont think a company like ILM will ever be short of clients, so if the mandate came from on high that they don't work for rivals, they don't work for DC/Warners and they won't exactly have to look that hard for an alternative.

They can work for them, but the question is, Does WB will ask their help. Anyways as I said before I highly doubt ILM is involved with BvS.

Wasn't it WETA that did the special effects for the avengers and Iron man 3?

WETA had a hand in creating The Hulk and the Chitauri. They were the primary VFX studio for Iron Man , though.

ILM and WETA did significant work on The Avengers, while WETA handled bulk of the work for Iron Man 3. ILM was deep into work on STID, Pacific Rim and The Lone Ranger while IM3 was filming. (And they likely wouldn't be able to take on a significant amount of shots.) Plus the NZ/US currency exchange rate was pretty favorable for Marvel, which enabled them to get more bang for their buck.

As for the question about Technicolor... MPC's owned by them. Technicolor also owns Mr. X, which mainly focuses on VFX work for television.

Looking at this animated gif and seeing how the color is brightened, maybe the auto-zoom would have been more effective. I know their attempt was to film it as if it were really happening, but I don't think the dark color worked for this film. I want the effects to look real when we see Superman flying, and fighting in the air.
