Ok this being my favorite comedy franchise of all time and one of the best trilogies ever made along with the first film being my all time #1 comedy(Neilsen vs. Montalban is untouchable, IMO), you'd think I'd be against this(and don't get me wrong, I'm 99.99999% certain this is destined to fail) but I'm not. I don't like the idea but go ahead and try, Paramount. If you just end up looking like idiots...well, it's no skin off my nose. I still have my classics. But if they really wanted to do this 'right', they'd get the last actor you'd ever expect to see in a comedy and give him the role. What made those movies so great was that hardly any of the cast were comedians(not just Neilsen). That was the genius of it. A movie devoid of comedians ended up making the funniest movie of all time. Anyway, good luck Paramount. You're gonna need it.

If anyone's interested someone has uploaded the old Police Squad episodes on Youtube.

This is actually some ********. Why use the Naked Gun property? Can't they come up with an original idea for a new series of spoof movies? I know that by now we're used to Hollywood being unoriginal and recycling old properties, and I'm actually rarely against "reboots" or remakes since I always welcome new interpretations...but this one I just do NOT understand. It actually makes me a bit upset.

Seriously?

Just do a new cop spoof series. It doesn't have to be Naked Gun. Lame.

If I was Ed Helms (or any sane comedic actor), I would have passed on this. I think he's making a big, big mistake...as are the people who are brining this idea to fruition.

There is no replacing Leslie Nielsen. None.

The thing is that Leslie was like the most unlikely actor to appear in comedies like Airplane, Police Squad, and Naked Gun. He was a dramatic actor who got into it through happenstance.

By having Ed Helms, a known comedic actor, it instantly misses the point. Even if Ed plays it straight it wouldn't work.

Yup. It'd be funnier with, like, Christian Bale or somebody bumbling around while acting like he's still in the Nolan Batman series.

I like Helms, but no. Leslie Nielsen made these films what they were. I just feel these won't have any sort of the heart the old ones had.

i think the producers know that they will have Ed Helms play it straight. they just cast him because he is a known comedic actor. in their mind they think that they will make more money if they cast a comedic actor who plays it straight like Nielsen than to have a known serious actor play it serious.

I think the difference is it's funnier when it's a serious actor doing a role like Drebin, it makes the situation all the more absurd because you know the actor is playing it for real. When you cast a comedic actor it's a totally different vibe.

They should have cast Daniel Day-Lewis as Drebin.

i agree. but in this situation i do think that with a known comedic actor they will make more money.

to bad it has no chance being the best possibe reboot. even if its a good comedy and Helms is good.....its not the same.

but hey we still have the old movie. i feel sorry for the young generation.

but he is a method actor. when you film a comedy and your main actors falls down from a skyscraper its an effect. its greenscreen and wires. DDL would jump for real. he would spend 6 months training with a parachute as small as a mobile phone. the parachute would be in his right pocket. and there would be a 4% chance of him dying. i think it would be to dangerous. maybe if they rewritte the script.

The Naked Gun Reboot Will Be More Sequel Than Remake

It was announced last month that Paramount Pictures had signed Ed Helms to lead a reboot of the comedy franchise The Naked Gun. Today, CraveOnline caught up with co-screenwriter Ben Garant (who writes alongside creative partner Thomas Lennon) and learned that the project isn't so much a remake as a sequel.

Right now were calling it 'Episode IV A New Hope,' Garant says. That will change, but thats the working title... Our take is that Ed Helms is Frank Drebin, no relation. That's how he introduces himself.

Based on the earlier short-lived ABC TV series "Police Squad!"(which also starred Leslie Nielsen and was created by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker), three films were released including The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988), The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991) and The Naked Gun 33 /3: The Final Insult (1994).

Similar to what was done with John Singleton's Shaft, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek or even the surprisingly franchise continuity-faithful Herbie Fully Loaded (that Garant and Lennon also drafted), The Naked Gun will use the "no relation" joke to offer a rebooted protagonist without technically contradicting the events of any of the previous films. In fact, Garant suggests that his aim is to capture the style of the original films without repeating the specific storyline.

"We are trying to reinvent the world," he says, "because that world was very Dragnet, but were trying to fit in 100 jokes a page... It's going to be a lot of fun. Were very much embracing the style.

No release date is currently set for The Naked Gun, but check back for updates as soon as they become available.

So now they're just basically using the Naked Gun name.

And the concept but it remains to be see if it's even possible to recreate it without Nielson, Simpson and the others.

Another issue is that these days spoofs and parodies have been driven into the ground by the Scary Movie guys and Freiberg & Seltzer. I don't think the GA has any faith that a good one can be made again. I think that's a large reason that Walk Hard tanked, even though it was awesome.

Idris Elba for Nordberg, he can play the smart straight guy cop who keeps having strange occurrences happen to him when he is around the absent minded Frank Drebin.
