Default The Ultimate Classic Rock Band Tournament

It had to happen eventually! So why not now?

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Give me your list of 16 of Rock's greatest bands. You don't need to put 'em in order,(I'm going to match them randomly)but it would help if you're top 5 reflected your favorites.

I'm not going to quibble about genre much, but the only real rule is it must be Classic Rock. The bands had to have made a legitimate album between the years 1960 and 1989. I chose 1990 as the cut off date, cuz I was never really into grunge/alternative rock (and late 80's is still late enough for a few to sneak in anyway)

I'll give a week or so for you to give me some nominations before we start.

Party on!

So no solo like David Bowie/Elton John?

Sometimes lists say "band" and include solo artists. Just checking!

Yeah,I should've made that point before. No solo acts.(We could always do a separate tourney for them at some point) I'm also thinking of discounting acts where the the singer is named in the band.(Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for example.) Bands named after a member/s is still fine though.(Van Halen, etc)

Great lists, guys! No solo artists are eligible though,Rorschach,so you might want to replace Elton,Neil,Bowie & Jimi.

Well, that's a debatable one I guess. That's what I was trying to say with my Bruce Springsteen example.Bands like "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers",should they be considered a singer and his back up band,or a legit band?I mean, every singer has a back up band, and usually works with the same one for years.

I was thinking more of bands that every member was important and equal for this tourney.(U2,Queen,etc)So I'm gonna stick to the rule.I hope you guys don't mind.

I've always considered Classic Rock bands to be mainly from the seventies. Maybe a more specific period is from the 1964 British Invasion, to Lennon's death in 80 or maybe before "Thriller" came out in '82 ('64-'82 may be the prime era).

1) Pink Floyd
2) The Beatles
3) The Doors
4) Heart
5) Jimi Hendrix Experience
6) Fleetwood Mac
7) Black Sabbath
8) Aerosmith
9) Led Zeppelin/The Who (tie, in terms of quality, for me)
10) Rolling Stones
11) Big Brother and the Holding Company
12) Jefferson Airplane
13) Lynyrd Skynyrd
14) Queen
15) Santana
16) Blondie

I guess I'll include The Jimi Hendrix Experience as a band. So,Jimi is in!

Keep the lists coming!I've only got enough for a 32 team tourney, and I'm trying for 64.

Hmm, would Patti Smith Group count? Was going to put that, but figured that's more just Patti Smith.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to stay away from.I wanted to do a separate tourny down the line for solo artists like Elton,Bowie,Clapton etc.So now that I have Jimi in the band one,I probably won't put him in the solo one. So,if you want to add Smith,I won't put her in the solo tourney I guess.

BTW,I'll wait another 2 days for lists and if I don't get any more, the folks that made a list can add 5 more to their list.

I've got a list of my own that brings up the count to about 50-ish bands.I'm looking for 64.

Nice to see The Cars get so much love.I thought I was going to be the only one to have them on my list.

There's a couple other bands I'm surprised to see haven't made it yet,but there's still time....

Alright gang, last day for lists.I probably can fit in one more list without cutting anybody's bands.I'll try to get the tourney up on Friday.

This has been a lot of fun for me already.I've been checking out some of the few bands I'm not very familiar with. This will certainly be a good education on Classic Rock for all. It'll be pretty tough competition. We've got the cream of the crop, some 60's,some prog,a little bit of everything.

IMO Pink Floyd is the all time greatest classic rock band. Nothing else even comes close for me...

Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall are ridiculously perfect.

Well,here are the rules....

First band to 7 votes wins the round (I might have to adjust that, but we'll see)

Time limit is 12 hours

You get two vote changes for the whole tourney

In case of a tie at the time limit,I'll announce "sudden death overtime" and the next person who votes (regardless if they already voted in that round or not) will cast the deciding vote.If no one votes within 30 minutes,I'll cast the deciding vote.

I'll post a video or two from each band, but remember, you're voting on the band, not the song!

Feel free to post a video too,if you want. (in fact,I might encourage it in some cases, since I'm not as familiar with some of the bands, only be sure you mind the content.Don't want "The Man" coming down on us.Err on the side of caution )

Be prepared to drink deeply from the goblet of rock!

Eh,I'm impatient.Let's start the show a little early.I only needed 3 more bands,so I picked a few random ones.I literally drew the matches from a hat,so it can't be more random or fair!(The only thing I made sure of,is bands with multiple nominations didn't get matched in the same round)With that out of the way...

Here's the first match up,two titans of rock.....

THE BEATLES

Early Yes was excellent prog rock, but they can't beat the Fab Four from Liverpool in terms of music history.

The Beatles.

Beatles, not even close. Yes was always a little hit and miss for me; some of their stuff just went on...
