Default Hypothetical: a Dazzler spin off

Hi everyone,

So fox are planning more spin offs and I tend to think comic book movies work best when they all have different tones (eg: iron man is sci fi, Thor is fantasy, cap is political drama or period piece) so I think dazzler could have a lot of merit because it would be a musical and be very different in tone.

Plus she's your best chance to see characters like mojo etc and how many xmen come with their own archnemesis compelling enough for the screen?

Anyway who would you cast?

Director : Stephen Elliott
Dazzler : Lady Gaga or hyunha
Mojo : Nathan lane
Spyral : audra McDonald
Shatterstar : domnhall Gleeson

I'm definitely partial to seeing Dazzler and I've floated the idea of Lady Gaga. Anyone seen her act? Could she pull it off?

My preference is for Dazzler to be in a teamup movie, though, not a solo movie, though. I also don't really see her with Mojo. If you're going Mojo, bring in Longshot and his glorious mullet (BTW, if this were ten years ago, I'd probably suggest Owen Wilson for Longshot).

Sorry I love Gaga but she can't act. I think Brie Larson would be perfect.

Have you seen her in American Horror Story? To me, it's also why I hedged and said it shouldn't be a solo film. But Dazzler is such a diva of a character that I think she could benefit from a bit of stunt casting. To play her straight up and just cast a normal actress would be weird to me.

Brie actually started as a singer. I didn't think of her until some fans questioned her about playing Dazzler on twitter.

Yes. I'm a fan of both AHS and Gaga. Despite being supported by a talented cast, I found her acting was so cringe worthy. And it's not just me. Some of my friends (in her base) were thinking the same. We still can't believe she won the GG, but hey, she did

Fair enough. As I said before, I haven't actually seen her in it (I've just heard positive comments), I just found the idea just so overwhelmingly intriguing.

What if Dazzler is a big pop star and a mutant "in the closet" and some tabloid outs her? Now she is getting legit death threats from anti-mutant types and goes on the run with some bodyguards or something.

Isn't that the plot of Dazzler: The Movie? I remember something about her being outed as a mutant and the backlash received. Certainly, Claremont's X-Men heavily referenced the backlash she was receiving (in a way that pretty clearly parallels gay rights movements).

I could definitely see Gaga as Dazzler. She has the star power to pull it off and she has the acting chops. I loved her in AHS the only thing is Ryan Murphy wrote her character to kind of be weird and over the top just like Gaga. Dazzler is a pop star but I don't want them to just make it be Lada Gaga on screen if they were to do that. But I highly doubt of all the female characters in the X-Men world that Dazzler would get the solo. Let's face it if Fox is gonna make that happen their first try would be to secure JLaw for a solo Mystique film.

Never heard of it. A google search agrees with you though

I'd want a Dazzler musical movie. And I'd like it set in the 1970s during the roller disco era. But not Lady Gaga please. I want Dazzler to be more straight pop princess.

If Taylor Swift weren't so damn tall, I might suggest her. She's done some acting too. But she's nearly 6ft. If you put her on roller skates, she'll tower over everyone else, as if she doesn't already.

If Britney were still in her prime, I'd suggest her too.

I think it needs to be a genuine musical star (who can also act) to pull off the musical aspect. Maybe Julianne Hough? She would be the go-to person for this.

Or if they want to go with someone more unknown, then Amy Pemberton (Gideon on Legends of Tomorrow). She has the musical and dancing skills and the look of Dazzler, and she's been in some musicals herself:

If they go for an actress that can sing, Brie Larson would be great, as well as Kristen Bell, Diana Agron, Kate Hudson, and Malin Ackerman.
If they go for someone who's more known as a singer who acts every so often, I'd agree with Lady Gaga, as well as Christina Aguilera, and Julianne Hough; I can also see Jessie J in the role.

I actually really like Nathan Lane for Mojo, especially after watching the American Crime Story show.

Don't really care much about Spyral to care who's cast as her, but McDonald would deserve a better role. As long as the character has 6 arms and fights with swords, I'm happy.

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:

The only music-oriented movies I'm aware of Fox releases have cartoon characters in them. This is an interesting spin to the whole female-led cbm pitches as it maybe (really doubt OP had this in mind) considers the most popular musical franchise of this decade, Pitch Perfect.

I was just about to ask whether Fox have produced any musicals before.

I don't think Dazzler should be dark and gritty at all. It should fully embrace its musical trappings and even allow itself to be campy at times if needed.

It would be a chance to do something different with a CBM and combine 2 genres (CBM and musical), which has never been done before.

And the soundtrack could be extremely successful as well if done well.

It would bring the whole Dazzler concept full circle, since the character was created in the first place for a movie which never materialised. Now, decades later, it could finally make its way to the big screen. And I think it could be more successful than it would've been back in the 70s, where I think it probably would've failed.

Now CBMs are big business, and musicals are gaining in popularity again.

I definitely would say to set it in the late 70s early 80s. Hopefully it would be more successful than something like Xanadu.

What could really catapult it into the big time is if it were successful enough to spawn a stage musical on Broadway and London's West End. Can you imagine that? Dazzler the Musical? And it would be a more legitimate thing than Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark.

I don't know why I immediately thought of the diva from the Fifth Element.
Anyway, I don't mind disco too much. If it got rocky or indie-like I could see it work.

They should consider all these options. X-Men could be the first CB franchise to create a musical, to finally introduce a gay hero to the big screen (*cough* Northstar *cough*) and maybe someday shoot for an Oscar-winning film ! A guy can dream...

I think it could incorporate disco and some early 80s pop and glam rock. After all, Dazzler's make up looked similar to the Kiss makeup.

The soundtrack could easily be like Starlight Express, which was disco, pop, glam rock, rock 'n' roll, etc.

And Starlight Express was on roller skates too. Although here, mostly Dazzler would be on skates, but not for the whole time.

Keep in mind that Dazzler's first appearance was 1980 (in X-Men 130), so her disco looked was deliberately dated from the beginning. Given that, I'm not sure a 70s movie would be fitting.

While Lady Gaga deliberately embraces the weird, I could still see her embracing a true pop princess look. IMO, her ability to transform herself isn't in issue. What's at issue is her ability to act.

Gaga was terrible in that Sopranos episode she guest starred in.

I think she would make a good Dazzler:

I think it should be more of a singer who acts than just an actress who sings. This is partly for music sales. I feel that people would be more interested to buy and listen to music featuring an actual singer than buying a song/album by an actress who has decided to release a single, and having a professional singer lends an air of legitimacy to it.

Of course, if an actress is equally as known as a singer then that's better.
