I am absolutely certain that Fox *wants* to sell the rights back. The problem, if you can call it that, is that Marvel isn't interesting in *buying* the rights, at least at Fox's asking price, which is likely unrealistic.

Fox has already announced FF2, correct? Sounds to ME like this projact is moving forward, and the rights arent going anywhere, anytime soon....furthermore; it sounds like Fox is confidant FF will do well....otherwise, why announce a sequel?

Well it sounds to ME like you haven't been paying very much attention to the development of this film, as they have not even started filming yet.... furthermore it sounds like Fox are on the fence about even making this and do NOT in fact have confidence in it and the sequel is likely a placeholder date for another movie.

No, not really. I stopped paying attention to this movie a long time ago. However, in light of the recent annoucements by Fox, all im seeing at this point is wishful thinking from fans who don't want it to happen.

Wishful thinking? All the red flags are there. You said it yourself, you stopped paying attention long ago. You just saw "Fox announce Fantastic Four 2" and assume "Hey! That must mean they have confidence in the first one!" But had you been paying close enough attention as the rest of us you'd realize its damage control. Not confidence.

I hope this movie gets sold to Disney.

I need me some Dr.Doom and Surfer with my MCU.

Avengers Age of Ultron is already filming and that movie is going to have a way larger budget and take more time to get the VFX done. Fox intend on releasing this a few weeks after AoU comes out. I don't know how many more delays they can do. They're running out of time.

I would think it's obvious Fox aint spending anything like the money on VFX that AOU will, so there's a good deal of post production time saved there. If they don't start April 21st and its pushed back again I think we could be looking at a FF1 level time table: They knocked that out in around 9 months or so from the start of shooting to it hitting the theatres.

Not exactly a great model to follow...but in theory they could start later on this year around September and still have the time to hit that release date.

God, the more I think about this project the more I realize how doomed it is. Avengers: Age of Ultron will be fresh on peoples minds when this thing is dropped and it will look so godawful in comparison. It also has a Pixar movie to directly compete with releasing on the same day.

While that sounds a lot like naming your children before your first date to me.

So now we're pretending that FOX is announcing a second film for "damage control"?'

Seems kind of extreme to cover up a franchise they supposedly don't care about to that degree...but whatever.

Oh how I wish. At this point I could care less about the actual FF team. Just give Disney the rights to Surfer, Doom and Galactus and I'd be happy. Them in the MCU? Yes please unfortunately that's but a dream as of now

Well it makes no sense. If the movie bombs they obviously won't be making a sequel.

For the past year, it seems like we've been expecting clarity soon, but it never comes, does it?

At this time last year, we were hearing filming would start in 3-4 months.

I think we're to a point where we almost have to have something solid, one way or another, by April 21.

If not, and that date comes and goes with no more information, I think that will be information in itself.

Ok. I agree that don't care is maybe the wrong exact words to describe Fox interest. But. I will say that may originally wanted to make this movie (To make a deal with Disney) but they're hand is forced so they're left with 2 scenarios. EDit: 3 scenarios...

1.) Make a great film and it bombs and Fox loses money or

2.) Make a Sub Par Film and it bombs and Fox loses money..

and the third

Stop production and take the loss which at this point may/most likely be less then by pressing forward to release in that tough 2015 competition

So when folks say that Fox doesn't care about this film its really Fox doesn't care how they make this movie because they're probably gonna lose money anyway..

So actually I hope they put their all in this film. Like $150mill plus or more. So they can lose more money for being stupid and unattached with the fan based audience they're trying to cater (They're gonna see it anyway) to and I can laugh at them..

The FF will be ruined for a while so if they make the movie to keep the rights. It's gonna take 7-10 years to rebooting anyway from the 3rd failing of the franchise anyway. So if they still wanna fail again with the FF2. Go right on ahead.. I can laugh in 2017 too...

I think the announcement of the sequel is a clear sign of their intent .
They wouldnt anounce a sequel knowing that they were going to pull the plug soon .

So choices one and two then.. Great.. I think the announcement is the WTH moment of the year and maybe its just to tell us that they intend to move forward regardless. You haven't even casted a villain yet but announce a sequel? Then they put The Wolverine in MARCH??? That their tentpole.. They may be serious about making this movie but I doubt there serious about that FF2 date..

(Starts Rant) Look I'm on the board if the worst happens then it does.. They make this film, Lose money, sets back the franchise then thats what they're gonna do. The only preferred Marvel Universe that exists to me is the MCU though I do have room for Spider-Mans universe too. Fox's Marvel Universe to me is some Alternate Hell that should be ignored with all its bad choices and inconsistent story lines and continuity. Whichever franchise that can escape that Black Hole the better (Great for Daredevil)..(Ends Rant)

Thats how I feel so save me from those Anti-Fox judgements because I have a right to feel negative..

I would agree they aint looking to pull the plug, but I do think the sequel release date is no more than a place holder rather than a show of serious intent. It's there for them if this one is successful enough to warrant a sequel, but if it isn't they can quietly remove it or put something else there.

And, as we have seen from some posters here, it has indeed served a 'damage limitation' purpose: After the rumours of trouble behind the scenes just a week before, no official denouncement of all that (actually nothing official at all so far. Even the castings have yet to be been officially announced) this totally non committal news came out, and we now have people saying this means they do 'care', this 'proves' their intent, their confidence and so on. Job done for some.

This far out though, without having shot a single frame for this one yet, a sequel release date really means bugger all. They are not bound to it in any way, the sequel has not already been 'greenlit', as I saw one poster hereabouts claim, but it's there if this one does well enough for Fox to pursue it.

But that is the key: This one has to do well first. Just getting an average haul might be enough for them to press ahead, but taking a big loss? I think that sequel date will disappear like piss in the rain.

Yeah , but that applies to every sequel announcement we here from every studio

Not a single frame has been shot for TASM3, The Venom And Sinister Six spinoffs
And X Men Apocalypse .

But if ASM2 and DOFP bombed those plans would be reconsidered, thats business as usual in Hollywood.

Not the same.. The ASM universe is set so they can announce sequels and spin-offs. Same with the X-Men. Their Universe has spanned for well over 10 years.. FF hasn't even a full cast yet.. See the contrasts?
