I think you're probably right KS. I will go even so far as to say if BvS is received as well as even MoS's 56% (or mixed), it will still be the biggest they see for a while.

I'm not even gonna touch on this one until we at the very least get a full 2 min + trailer with a good look at pretty much all the characters and a base idea of what the story is actually about.

Let me put it this way. I don't think there has or ever will be anything in the world of comics something as big as the concept of Batman vs Superman. Any way you cut it, they are both the most popular superheroes in the history of comic books. Does this mean anything? Not particularly, but I think it's just a really easy sell, something the marketing team could easily propel to a billion IF they do it right. I just don't see this having to fight as hard for a billion as some people say it does.

I have to agree with Sharkboy. Batman and Superman not only in the same movie, but presumably against each other, is quite the draw. That's without the big name actors in this film. I'd estimate that if the movie is reasonably good it'll probably hit the one billion dollar mark.

700 million and change for each of Captain America 2, Amazing Spider Man 2, and Days of Future Past (eventually). That might be a new threshold for "respectability" in BO earnings for a big budget CBM.
Two of those three movies are very, very good, and in the case of CA2, there was no competition at the box office. A billion dollars is hard. BvS will need its good brands, its good marketing campaign... and need to be an excellent movie. |

Forbes' Scott Mendelson makes an entirely plausible case that 'Batman vs. Superman' could move to April 2016.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmen...to-april-2016/ Of course, he basically pointed out what I did earlier.

But now that it seems Marvel has pushed the summer window up one month with Cap, May is becoming more crowded. Traditionally June is the really crowded month if memory serves, but now everyone wants May. And yeah you also don't want BvS to be set up for failure by people seeing Cap3 a month earlier, loving it, and then comparing it to BvS. You want that to be the other way around. That article may have made me do a 180 on the release date topic.

And since BvS has been shooting for a few weeks, it's one of the 2016 titles that can afford to move up. It'll be complete by the end of next year anyway. Cap 3 is still in the writing stages, and it likely won't shoot until late this year or likely early 2015.

anything under 1B will be a major disappointment for the first team up in cinematic history of the two greatest super heroes ever.
the thing is, i think they will make that money. trailers will play a huge part of it as someone said, and snyder knows how to cut a mean trailer. look at the trailers for 300, watchmen, and MOS. batman/superman money shots will undoubtedly drum up worldwide interest. |

Right now, I would prefer BvS to swap places with King Arthur. I don't expect King Arthur to be a box office juggernaut. Put that film somewhere else. Or take this film to April.

As much success WB's had with mid-July openings since 2007 (even though HP5 wasn't a $1B pic), I think the studio needs to start taking risks with other weekend spots -- especially with Robinov no longer calling shots on the release dates.
Going to April could be their new July, so to speak. It doesn't help that Fox has already booked their Marvel films for July 2017 and July 2018 either.

Well, even though WB hasn't moved BvS yet, their former co-financing partner Legendary is taking a leaf from Marvel Studios' playbook. Pacific Rim 2 is coming out April 7, 2017 rather than the May-August summer corridor the first one opened in.

290plus domestic doesn't seem so disappointing in the context of 2014. Comic book films et all.

"Brand matters more than quality"? "An abundance of recognized characters"? "US box office doesn't matter anymore"? I'm sure that's what Sony was telling itself before TASM2 came out, too. Brand certainly *matters*, sure, but arguably that value is why MoS managed to make 600+M despite reviewing terribly.
Its entirely possible SvB will make a billion dollars, but that was a *really* weak argument for why. A much better argument would be "WB is really good at marketing, and Snyder may suck at directing, but he's really good at producing easily marketable cuts of footage." Or "Ben Affleck is a big name, and could create big interest in the new Batman take, especially if he has lots of creative input." |

I'm going to call it. People are going to riot at midnight shows because they couldn't get in to see it first or because they were fighting over seats.

Unless the movie is straight up awful I think 800 million is a lock. China and the other expanded markets pretty much guarantee it.

To me, brand matters, but the value of seeing those sonic booms was something fresh and awesome. I'm sure Snyder will do the same with new & awesome visuals for hyping BvS and beefing up it's BO take.

Not a Snyder fan, but his stuff makes for great trailers. The MoS trailers - in particular the shot of Supes slamming into the bank vault - convinced me I was in store for some next level ****. That and my love of Superman got me (and my fiance) into the theater opening weekend. This despite the fact that I consider DotD Snyder's best film.
I expect even more spectacular trailers for this flick. And yeah I'll be there opening weekend with all you guys and gals. Lol what choice do I have?

![]() Agreed on your points - the visuals, especially the cape porn - are going to be out of control for BvS.
