Default Things You Hope They'll Keep From Man of Steel

What good elements of Man of Steel, do you hope Snyder and co. will try to maintain or even amplify in BvS? In terms of cinematography, designs, story elements, character development, etc.

Some little things, in order to not be too obvious:

I like the Daily Planet offices. Everybody is dressed well. It's actually not realistic in a way due to our recent cultural evolution, a lot of Americans wear jeans and a tshirt to work. The DP staff dressed like it was 1985 in terms of being formal and it was nice. Lois Lane was dressed as a businesswoman and not as a vixen. One small detail they put in the movie is that the DP staff had a very limited colour scheme to their dress code, they wore a narrow range of colours, that's unrealistic too, but it makes the movie look better.

I hope to see more of Jenny Olsen and Steve Lombard, and no Jimmy. They're trying to do something different, which is cool. Jimmy was underwhelming in both Lois and Clark and Smallville.

I like the use of General Swanwick as an ambassador for the US ruling class. That's something that's rarey done in these kinds of movies: they're using a black person for the role, it shows the kind of creative courage Snyder has.

Good thread, DA.

There are few things I think MOS got right and would like to see return:

Superman's demeanor: He was just the right amount of assertive in MOS when he was in true "superman" mode. He was confident, but not pushy, rude or condescending. I have to give Goyer, Snyder and Cavill major points for avoiding two very easy to make and common mistakes of writing Superman, which are making him a hopelessly naive pushover and making him an arrogant jock that belittles others less powerful than himself. JL War supes was the latter. MOS supes was able to appear in control, but yet cooperated with humans in a respectful manner. Even when he took down that drone, he stated his reasons and explained that he doesn't want to be spied on, but that he wants to cooperate with and trust humanity/be trusted by them. They really struck the perfect balance with this supes. He has a bit of an edge, but is still a good ol' boy at heart and doesn't take actions against humanity unless he's protecting himself.

Lois's role: She actually had stuff to do in MOS. She had a hand in saving the world and provided superman with trust and comfort that he rarely received in his life before that point.

Action scenes: I loved them. Finally we got big action worthy of this character. I want more of it.

Ma Kent: They got her right. You can feel her warmth and love for Clark, but also her fear of what the world might do to him. I want to see more moments with Lane and Cavill.

Music: Loved the Zimmer score and want him to return.

Oh right, that's true, more Diane Lane please.

I always knew that she was beautiful, but I hadn't realised what an amazing actress Lane is. I wonder if her career suffered from the stereotype that beautiful women in Hollywood are not there because of their acting talent. She's a terrific actress.

-Hans Zimmer
-The degree of secularization the screenwriters applied to the source material.
-Flashbacks to Superman's upbringing.
-The Into The Wild look they used for said scenes.

Didn't like Lois' involvement in the story once the Kryptonians appear in the atmosphere.

Was it ever explained why Zod demanded that she be turned over to them? They literally could have had Faora say "Just cuz," and it wouldn't have changed a single thing about how the movie played out. From where I'm standing, she had no business being there, other than to serve as the filmmakers' blatant and blind attempt at making her a non-damsel-in-distress. Just really eye-roll-worthy stuff, in my opinion.

But to keep this post on topic:

- Superman's suit

That's pretty much it.

Everything else, I could do without.

Yes a million times they were listening to world wide feeds so knew she knew Supes. That Woodburn guy revealed it to the whole planet.

Well I stand justly corrected. Guess I need to revisit the film to see how I missed it.

Thank you, sir.

EDIT: Well now I have a follow-up question. The information they got from Lois (where Clark lived), why couldn't they have just gotten that from him? He even said they probed his mind too.

Wow. Didn't know you were this negative about the movie. Damn. To each their own I guess.

And about Lois: They probably knew (maybe by that news program on TV) that she knew Kal and wanted more info from her perspective. She happened to be there when they came to get Kal and perhaps they thought they should take someone who knows him along too in case she has some more info. I wouldn't call it "eye-roll worthy."

Zod demanded Lois be on the ship so that they could probe her mind, since it was public knowledge that she had investigated aliens. It's explicitly explained in the movie, Lois says "they probed my mind" and she apologised profusely to Clark in an emotional scene.

Probe her mind for what?

To use as leverage. Take someone they think is close to him so he doesn't try anything.

I suppose I can work with that.

Sorry for the derailment, folks. Carry on.

The epic tone.

The costume.

The quality of the action.

The diverse locations.

That's about it.

That's actually a pretty agreeable list.

So x2

The suit. Loved it, looks like it served a purpose on Krypton and just looks like it belongs on him without looking cartoonish.

I felt the suit was a little too dark you know? I mean it looked great but it should have been brighter.

One problem I have with MOS suit & the New 52 suit is they took out the red underwear but didn't add anything. I mean the red underwear in a way made the suit stand out. Maybe have like a red stripe down the side of him from his arms to his legs.

Nah, a bright suit would look like a cartoon, if anything a little darker would have made more sense. I think they made it as light as they could without looking childish on screen.

The tone of the movie. People will whine about how joyless it is etc, but I prefer DC's subtle humour over excessive humour in Marvel movies. I just hope we don't get a jarring tonal shift like TASM-TASM2.

I agree, I loved the overall tone of the film. Snyder said something about the universes exploding now that we have Batman and Superman together, so I'm anxious to see how the two films mesh. From what little I have seen of TASM2, I too hope it's a more subtle shift.
