I agree. I prefer this tone and subtle humor. I would like some humor at the daily planet and Clois/Superman-batman banter, but keep it reasonably placed and somewhat clever.

Also WoodyROM...that avatar of yours is majestic!

I will never really understand all the hate this movie gets.

Other than the obvious things I really hope they keep the reverence the film shows for the Superman character. It doesn't feel just like a Superman story, but more like a movie about Superman told by people that really respect him. I'm hoping that doesn't change with the addition of the rest of the DCU.

Also, I'm a big fan of the artistic style of the film. I'm not saying that they should keep everything exactly the same (I know a lot of people want it brighter) but I'm counting on Snyder to keep making these film look fantastic.

I agree with the cast and quality of action. Those were easily the best aspects of MOS.

Um, in what world do "a lot of Americans wear jeans and a tshirt to work"? I can't think of very many jobs period where employees would be allowed to wear jeans and a t-shirt. Most working people (especially in white-collar jobs, like a newspaper office) are expected to look professional nowadays, which means suits or at the very least business casual. The jeans/t-shirt look is typically only allowed in certain cases like developer positions in small software & game companies....

Can't be having all this positivity and optimism...

In all seriousness, we need more of these kind of threads to balance out the whining.

I work in one of the biggest financial buildings in a top 3 city in America. People wear a t shirt and jeans like it's nobody's business. They usually only suit up for important meetings.

It depends on where you work, but in settings like hospitals, academia, software, etc people dress in jeans and a t-shirt.

Snyder was giving the Daily Planet a prestigious and professional look, which probably looks more prestigious and professional than any newspaper in contemporary America -- which I approve of.

I walked out of MOS 100% satisfied, so really I hope they keep it all.

But I'll list my favourite things and then go from there.

1) Superman. When Cavill steps out wearing the costume the first time, it was like Supes stepped out of the comics and onto the screen. Also, I like the different depiction of Clark Kent as a jeans-wearing, manual-labour-working, facial and chest hair-sporting, helping mom with the dishes, watching NFL and drinking budweiser, regular guy.

After fighting off the Kryptonians in Smallville, what does he do first ? he goes to make sure his mom is okay. That's a Superman we can cheer for.

2) Lois Lane: Adams was the first Lois Lane that I didn't find annoying. She carried off being intelligent and strong, without being a pain in the ass. And she actually did stuff that helped move the story along. And best of all, she knows he's Superman from day 1 ! Yayyyyy ! I love that bit where Supes goes to check on mom, and Lois rocks up and calls him Clark ! The central problem of Lois Lane solved, nicely done lads.

Looking forward to more of Adam's Lois in future films.

3) The epic scale: There's a reason they call it a job for Superman, forget about the cat up the tree, when this Superman gets involved it's on !

Nolan/Goyer/Snyder wanted to show us what it would look like if Superman really did have to fight for Earth's survival in downtown Metropolis....and that's exactly what it would look like. Keep that, and keep it fast and ferocious ( the Smallville fight was the best Superhero v Supervillain fight ever, I liked TASM 2 but it isn't even close).

Honourable mention: All things kryptonian, including Jor El (great job by Crowe, Jor El is the world's smartest man, and he kicks ass), Krypton and Kryptonian technology (okay might not see as much of that in the sequel), but I loved the look. That exposition sequence with the liquid metal droplet tech was great, I'm so over holograms and HUD's that it was a nice change.
Sort of a real retro feel to it. Awesome.

Establishing shots, like the butterfly and the swing in Kansas, the schoolbus and the corn fields. Made the film feel like it actually did take place in the real world.

My one request would be more of the main title. There's a youtube remix of the themes flight, look to the stars and the main title, its awesome, so a bit of that please Mr Zimmer, and more of the main title in general.

Agree, and I hope his DP reflects this. I want him to be a normal guy, one who has friends and hangs out with them at times, not some socially inept weirdo who keeps dropping things. From the end of MoS it looks like that's what we'll get - a nice, regular guy but one who is quite quiet and does 'keep to himself' a bit... is good at deflecting attention and keeping his head down.

Yeah I agree, Amy was my favourite Lois and I really wasn't convinced when I heard about her casting initially! The fact that she's in on it is one of the best things Snyder and Goyer could have done IMO. I never liked Kidder's Lois mainly because I just felt she was a bit of a b**** to Clark, she was very shallow in what she wanted = the hero, not the human. Amy was perfect.

1) Superman's Costume - It was perfection.

2) Tone - There was a lot of weight in Man of Steel that made it feel monumental and important. Work in some subtle humor and Daily Planet charm and this time we'll be golden.

3) What Are You Going to Do When You Are Not Saving the World? - A lot of superhero films these days don't have consistent themes (The Amazing Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America). Superman should have his own anthem, and Zimmer would do well to bring it back for the second go around.

4) Action - The action scenes in MOS, while too close together, were incredible. Sprinkle it out this time so they don't all get shoved into the third act.

5) Daily Planet - MOS's final scene was grin-inducing. Lois Lane and the Daily Planet crew really look like they have more awesome stuff in store.

They need to either brighten the blue and yellow to where it stands out or pops OR ditch the de-saturation or the film. It looked bland

-Mythic quality & awe-inspiring cape-porn moments

-Not sure if this story will warrant this kind of thing again, but I enjoyed the Malick-esque spiritual quality and the moments of cinepoetry.

-Also, the sort of...50's classic sci-fi/superhero feel. Out-there concepts (the dna of a billion people hidden in one refuge's body) and occasional over-the-top tone ("You're a monster Zod, and I'm going to stop you!").

-Cavill's demeanor. Smiling when he needs to. Yelling when he needs to.

-Superman's sense of speed and power.

-Zimmer's themes.

-Lots of feels and an overall story that's heavy, but ultimately uplifting.

I'm not a big fan of the shiny or the texture of the suit. nor the muted colors. but I get why they went that direction

and not all the action was in the 3rd act. we had the amazing Krypton stuff at the beginning. and a little bit of action at the oil rig.

yeah but the shot in the church when Clark was talking to the priest about sacrificing himself for mankind with the stained glass Jesus in the background was a little heavy handed though.

Maybe they tried too hard to parallel his situation to that of Christ praying in the garden of Gethsemane?

That was genuinely poor. As well as the reference to being 33 years of age.

Superman Returns did a similar theme with the Christ comparisons. I think they would have their hands full with all the other characters in BvS to worry about continuing that over done theme, hopefully.

A few things:

1) That scene where Superman struts up to the military and explains his plan, and he acts all confident and authoritative? I want more of that.

2) I did appreciate the epic scale and tone of MoS, and more of that would probably be the best approach for a film with this many headliners.

3) I actually did like Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and it would be nice to see a couple of scenes with her and Clark to break up the tension every now and then.

Diane Lane played the part great. A strong Martha. She reminds me more of Smallville's Martha rather than the frail, old woman Martha we saw in all the previous films.

More back story with Jonathan shaping young Clark, Costner got him so right and loved the scenes with him and the actor playing teen Clark.

I found MOS's comparisons better, sense a) a Gethsemane reference is a practical and relateable choice for regular people as well as the son of God, and b) they weren't then followed up by inconsistent powers that make the comparison seem more literal, and he wasn't also turned into an accidental dead-beat dad afterwards. Having a humble moment in common with the carpenter is better than comparing Superman directly to the crucifixion scene.

As for the movie, I kind of want the harder attempt at Sci-Fi kept in this movie, as well as the general tone being more in common with the Post-Crisis universe than the Silver Age. The Silver Age is responsible for a lot of the stupid stuff I don't like, and the modern Superman I've read has a much larger and more complex world.

Was it ever explained why Zod demanded that she be turned over to them? They literally could have had Faora say "Just cuz," and it wouldn't have changed a single thing about how the movie played out. From where I'm standing, she had no business being there, other than to serve as the filmmakers' blatant and blind attempt at making her a non-damsel-in-distress. Just really eye-roll-worthy stuff, in my opinion.
She also had no reason to be on the plane. I'm sure some soldier could have placed the key inside the spaceship instead of her.

Dude, we cant have that. It's a superman movie. Did you expect it to be uplifting, heartwarming and optimistic? Grimdaaaaaaaaark.

So to answer the thread question, the last thing i want to see carried over would be the tone. I wasnt that depressed watching a comic book movie since Batman Returns and that movie was claustrophobic, morbid and full of monsters.

What i would want to see carried over would be
1) suit
2) good casting choices
