Partly yes, but also funnelling the air under the panels creates down force which gives more stability and grip, while also providing cooling attributes for the engine and or brakes.

See Affleck's buddy reply to Heston in TRUE LIES about why a terrorist is named the SAND SPIDER to get your answer.

Probably because it sounds scary.

Gotcha. I mean...I dig the hell out of the design, but I don't want the Batmobile to look like a production model car at all. It needs to look custom.

The Tumbler was awesome, but also very big and I assume very heavy. It was incredibly functional though, which was perfect for Nolan's 'real world' take on Batman. It was first and foremost a military vehicle, which was modified to suit Batman's needs.

On the other hand, you have Burton and Schumacher's stylized versions of the Batmobile which - with their fins, neons and bat motifs - were more about looks than functionality. They were hugely symbolic but realistically they weren't cars that could tackle any terrain.

Thus we have 2 previous approaches to the Batmobile, at different ends of the spectrum. I expect Snyder's version of the Batmobile to meet somewhere in the middle, but maybe erring more toward's Nolan's approach. A bit like a lighter, faster more streamlined tumbler, but with some sleeker styling (Snyder does like his aesthetics, after all).

I think it will still have to be a very functional Batmobile. Snyder's take on MOS was very much rooted in the reality of a modern world (how would Earth react to an alien arriving?) so we have to assume his follow-up will retain that tone.

Yes, the Tumbler was a military vehicle, but the stunt driver himself kept praising how incredible it handled and that it achieved things he never thought possible given the design.

Oh yeah, I've read that from the stunt driver too. It was designed to handle great. I just meant that regardless of that, it was portrayed as a large, heavy and strong vehicle (smashing through concrete walls on the freeway, ramming dumper trucks, etc) and I have a suspicion this new one will be smaller and more streamlined in order to move through cities quicker.

The concept art for the 95 car was so much better than what we got, and not that far off, actually. It had so much more of the beastly quality that Schumacher was going for, almost reminiscent of the Xenomorph. But, like so many beautiful concepts, small tweaks really butchered its translation to a real world object.

I'm expecting something like this. And it's completely fine with me.

They're two of the best. Classic beauty and rugged beauty. The Nolan car didn't try and out do the Burton one, it took a whole other approach. A blend of this could be revealed today.

I'm lucky enough to own a 1/6 scale Hot Toys Tumbler. It sits proudly in my lounge room and is a thing of beauty. I love it.

I'm sure any fan of the Tumbler has already seen this a while back, but I wanted to post it again anyway. I'm not a big fan a Jay Leno, but he knows his cars...and was lucky enough to get hands on time with the Tumbler!

The build quality of the Tumblers is incredible. I'm anxious to see how much of that was carried over and improved upon for the new practical car.

I like how the tumbler is further away from the rest.
