Default Themes in Batman vs Superman

The recent Nolan Batman films had very strong themes running throughout them.
  • Batman Begins was centred around fear (Bruce's fear of Bats became his driving force for his transformation into Batman, and the fear element played a more obvious role in the plotline re: the Scarecrow's 'fear toxin').
  • The Dark Knight explored thematic issues regarding morality, and right vs wrong, and causality. Has Batman's presence actually made Gotham worse? Will people inherently look out for themselves at the cost of others (see the Ferry situation) ? Can a good person (Harvey Dent) be turned evil?
  • The Dark Knight Rises was, as it's title suggests, mostly about Hope and rising up from whatever low point you are at. Bruce begans the film as a broken man, then gets physically broken by Bane, but ultimately finds his way back to being Gotham's hero.

Man of Steel had some overt religious themes, and also touched on such things as self-discovery, finding your place in the world, and finding your purpose in life.

What themes do you think Batman vs Superman will have? The very obvious route would be for a world-weary Batman to present a 'dark' side of being a hero, whilst the new and fresh Superman presents a lighter and more hopeful approach. And somehow these two will meet in the middle and learn something from each other.

But perhaps that's too obvious......

I'd hope that they'll explore issues of isolation, and kinship. Batman and Superman may instinctively feel alone (given they are both orphans, albeit with the Kents/Alfred assuming parental roles), but may see a mirror image in each other, despite their very different approaches to what they do. And this is eventually what builds up the unbreakable bond between them and leads them to invite others who are different yet similar (Cyborg, WW, etc) to form the Justice League.

I'd also hope they explore what makes a hero. Batman has no powers, yet is just as effective at what he does as Superman. Perhaps being a hero isn't about abilities, it's about determination and using your resources - something a world-weary Batman may have to rediscover in the film.

Got it in one. Superman needs his trust in humanity both rewarded (following his revealing, from Batman/the world) and tested (by Luthor/Batman).

Batman needs to regain trust in both others (via Superman) and himself, as well as his cynicism confirmed (in Luthor).

That you are never alone to deal with your pain, that someone else has been there before you and that you can share the weight of expectation together and that grief lives with us forever, it's how you manage it that allows you to walk a step further every day.

MOS was about our contact with alien life
BVS would be about our reaction to said alien life

Not to mention how the trust that Superman wishes to gain from humanity has to be earned.

Exactly.

Rebuilding: Metropolis itself and trust in others.

The fall of luthor..he goes from this man who generally wants to help rebuild metropolis, but he has an arrogant unlikable streak that the public rejects in favor of superman, to a jealous, hateful man who will do anything to bring superman down, no matter the cost in lives and/or money.

Renewal.. (Batman comes out of retirement, Wonder Woman an Amazonian comes out from legend and Superman renewing trust and faith in his symbol of hope).

Unity (among the three).

Power. Luthor wanting more. Superman having it all. Wonder Woman taking hers out of isolation. Batman expanding his past Gotham.

I hope they let the story drive the themes and not the themes drive the story. Nolan type exposition is exactly what I don't want.

Superman is the center of snyders universe. He is the beginning of everything. He shook the world and out fell batman, Wonder Woman, cyborg, possibly other Heros. These Heros have existed before his rise but it because if him that they will challenge his ethics and test his dedication to earth. The theme will be wrapped around the idea of "kicking the hornets nest"
