Default Who should score Wonder Woman?

Who should score Wonder Woman?

Following WB’s decision to hire a female director, I thought it might be appropriate to hire on a female composer(s) to score the film as well.

While there aren’t many female composers of wide-release films at the moment, there are a few, but I think the best fit may be a collaborative effort between Lisa Gerrard who has collaborated with Hanz Zimmer on Gladiator, The Bible and Son of God, and who has composed films solo such as Whale Rider and Burning Man.

Her work is very atmospheric and not very dynamic, though, so I think adding a second female composer, though one without film scoring credits, might add the necessary dynamism; Jo Hamilton.

Jo Hamilton is a British singer/musician/composer of vast talent, and while she tends toward the atmospheric as well, she is also capable of creating driving music and I believe the combined vocal expertise she and Lisa Gerrard would bring to an exotic Wonder Woman soundtrack could be amazing.

Here’s a sneak peak at Hamilton’s new album; the song featured below is entitled ‘Glorious’ and it certainly is. A song like this could be used so easily in a Wonder Woman triumphant scene it raises the hairs on the back of my neck just thinking about it. The lyrics should probably be translated into whatever language they create for Themyscira as it would otherwise sound a tad on-the-nose and awkward.

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Hamilton’s song ‘Liathach’ (a Highland Mountain in Scotland) demonstrates how Hamilton’s songs can set a mood very effectively and they also show off her incredible vocal power and range.

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Finally her song ‘Release Us’, which is more rock oriented (prog-rockish), and demonstrates her ability to produce driving music which could accommodate the kind of action that a Wonder Woman film would be chalk-full of.

I also believe having Hanz Zimmer on hand as a consultant would benefit cementing a soundscape that would be compatible with the DC Universe and his familiarity with Gerrard would make such a collaboration very effective and efficient.

I realize this is completely fantasy casting and probably would never happen, but you can’t blame a guy for dreaming.

My mind was in such a dirty place when I read (and misunderstood) this title...

Anyway, I think something less bombastic and more melodic would fit Wonder Woman movie better. Howard Shore, Clint Mansell, Philip Glass or John Debney could work well.

I don't like Gerard's work much, though I see how it could be made to fit this movie. As for the music with female vocal, I'd prefer something more similar to the early "Clannad":

And I don't want Hans Zimmer as consultant for composers same as I don't want Snyder as consultant for directors. It is restricting to work with such pre-set conditions. Let them show their creativity.

That. Was. Gorgeous. I like it. I am thinking of a tune that might go with Themyscira but my mind wanders to Egyptian sounding tunes because of that New Mexico set they built for BvS. Haha. I don't know why.

Edit: I heard this song recently and there's a part in it that to me sounds a bit Amazonean I guess? Could be used in a scene where Diana is training or something. Whichever composer can make a score that has a tune in it that sounds like this (or any other score appropriate for WW) will be fine with me.

From 3:56 to 4:15

Heh. Yeah, it's because of that damn ziggurat that looks quite a bit Egyptian. Nevertheless, some oriental sounding tunes could work well. Very well actually.

They could also go for more ancient Greece-like music, and use some tambourine, kithara, lyre and pan flute.

And I like the beat in that video. It would work nicely for some training or battle scene, I find.

Hell. Yes. That would be ideal. Haha.

Ennio Morricone.

Italy is almost as close to Greece as it gets, both in history and geography.

Oh, I love Ennio Morricone.

But, for some reason, I thought that he died couple of years ago.

My top choice would be Alexandre Desplat who this year has scored Godzilla, Unbroken, The Imitation Game etc and has previously scored Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 and 2, Rise of the Guardians, Argo and Zero Dark Thirty.

My other choices would be Ramin Djawadi who scored Iron Man, Pacific Rim and Game of Thrones, Howard Shore who is known for Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and the more outsider choice Bear McCreary who has done the scores for Agents of SHIELD, The Walking Dead and Battlestar Galactica.

Default Who should compose the score for Wonder Woman?

With the film starting production later this year, I'm interested in one aspect of the upcoming film which hasn't really been discussed which is about who should the composer as music is just as important as directing and casting and superhero films generally have good scores from John Williams who composed Superman, Danny Elfman who composed Spider-Man 1 and 2, Batman and Batman Returns to Hans Zimmer who directed The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel so it's my hope that Wonder Woman has a score that can be on the same level as those scores.

My choice for composer would be Alexandre Desplat who recently won the Oscar for The Grand Budapest Hotel but has scored films like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2, Godzilla and The Imitation Game to name but a few.

Well, Zimmer said he would be working on individual themes for the heroes in JL. Does that mean that the WW film's score will have some input from Zimmer or be done by Zimmer?

I would totally be down with Tom and Hans working together on all the themes. Imagine if in JL that each have their own theme that combines into one grand JL theme? They use the individual themes for the solos, or course.

I'm glad we're at least getting themes for these characters, it's one thing I've felt the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been missing (and I've found their scores in general apart from Iron Man's to be underwhelming).

Yeah, they need to do better than Marvel in that regard for sure. Though to be fair, I think they already do.

There is goning to be a lot of Grecian sounds and a bit of Roman sounds mixed into the soundtrack.

It's because the Greek Gods have a Roman counterpart, as well.

I think they are going to announce the composer, at the same time, as the new screenwriter and the costume designer for Wonder Woman.

Composers usually get announced later than the screenwriter, since that part of production comes so much later.

Are you sure a new screenwriter is coming on board? Jason Fuchs has officially been confirmed as screenwriter, with MacLaren shepherding the writing process.

A rumor erupted a few months ago about possibly six writers all working on separate WW scripts but that hasn't been confirmed, as far as I know.

Howard Shore could bring a dreamy, majestic atmosphere to Wonder Woman.
