I don't think they needed to bring Mjolnir back, they could have kept it, but they just didn't want to leave the Thor from this timeline without his hammer ^^
The 2014 timeline matters because the Gamora from this timeline exists now in the MCU timeline, and the Guardians will probably search for her in GOTG 3.
And I don't think putting the stones back erased any branches, only some of them.
Let's call TL1 the timeline created when Cap, Iron Man...
That means in all the other cases in which the changes are not nullified at the right time, alternate timelines do happen. If I understand you correctly, you're saying there are none, only the main timeline.
The results would be catastrophic if an alternate timeline was created with only 5 of the 6 infinity stones, that's what the Ancient One is talking about. Which is why later the only concern Hulk has with the changes made during the time travels is to bring back each stone in its own timeline at...
Little nitpick with this : according to Hulk, Cap must bring back the stones in their respective timelines at the same moment they were taken away. So (BT1, t5) = (BT1, t2). (BT2, t3) = (BT2, t2). (BT3, t3) = (BT2, t2). (BT4, t3) = (BT4, t2).
In the Cap&Peggy timeline, Hank Pym will discover the Pym Particles. With one dose, old Cap can travel back to the main timeline, he still has his own time-travel device.
