George Clooney to Direct Showtime Thriller Series 'The Department' - Variety

Clooney and Grant Heslov will also serve as executive producers via Smokehouse Pictures. The show is based on the French series “Le Bureau des Legendes.” Production is slated to start later this year.

“‘The Department,’ based on the riveting and brilliant series ‘The Bureau,’ will follow in the great tradition of ‘Homeland,’ one of the most successful and brand-defining shows at Showtime,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and Paramount Media. “Just as ‘Homeland’ elevated global espionage to new heights, ‘The Department’ will take viewers even deeper into a world of intrigue and subterfuge with complicated characters who struggle with their own demons as they fight existential threats to the nation and the world.”

I recently decided to check out the original French series . I'm about halfway through the 1st season (of 5) and absolutely loving it. It's a tense drama similar to The Americans where that show was more of a character drama 'The Bureau' more about the tradecraft, how French external security agency deals with new, missing, captured and compromised spies and more.

The original is honestly one of the best/if not the best Spy drama I've watched

Excellent choice, I was'nt to sure about Clooney directing this.

Curious to see him play a CIA agent, and not someone from MI6. When in the original series
it's Guillaume (who works for French intelligence, that basically becomes a double agent for the CIA)

Love the choice for 'Henry' certainly someone I can see who's no longer doing field work, but willing to do so if needed.

Awesome, so looks like she will be their updated vesion of ´Nadia El Mansour

Waterston will play Naomi, the Operations Officer and ex-handler of Martian, played by Michael Fassbender. As previously announced, other series regulars will include Jeffrey Wright as Henry, Jodie Turner-Smith as Sami, and Richard Gere as Bosko.

Reznik (Babylon) will play Coyote, an undercover CIA agent. Brooke (After Life, Children of Men) will play another CIA officer who goes by Grandpa. Harris (Hacks, Frasier) will play Dr. Blake, a behavioral psychologist assigned to the agency. Fowler (The Nevers) plays Martian’s teenage daughter, Poppy. Lightfoot-Leon (Masters of the Air) plays Danny, a promising agent trainee.

It looks like they are mixing Seasons, as I am fairly certain in the French version, Coyote, only shows up in S3

Starting to wonder just how involed Clooney will be ,seeing as he was oringally attached to produce and direct the pilot, but that's no longer happening.

Gere teases that "every episode is going to have surprises," and that "it's going to be its own creature" from the original French series.

"It'll hopefully have the same excellent qualities of that one, but also that was probably 10 years ago, and it ran for five years," he adds. "And the world was a different place 10 years ago, and the focus of the world conflicts that it was engaging in is different than the ones today. This is very contemporary. It's very today, the political world that this [series] deals with."

Bonneville will appear as James Richardson, described as “a British agent who has a long-standing history with Martian.”

Awesome was not expecting a Nov release date

Amazing cast, and it looks fantastic. Espionage is one of my favorite genres so I’m definitely down for this show.

I'd highly recommend watching the original French version (5seasons I think also available on Paramount +)before watching the upcoming remake, it's one of the best (if not the best) spy drama's I've seen and have since compared every other spy show to it.
