Real win on pens after one of Atletico’s pens (Alvarez) gets ruled out for a double tap. Real didn’t play well today though.

Wow surprised the Liverpool didnt even make it past PSG in the end, seemed to be a team that really got at Liverpool more than most other sides though over the two legs.

Champions League looks like it might be a bit more unpredictable but then it might just leave the way open for Madrid to walk it again in the end. Bayern did their job on their side of the draw also.
PSG were so dominant in that first leg that it made it less of a surprise. They are a much better team now without all the egos, some young players, some local players, and everyone playing for the team unlike before.

Didn't see the game but read about the Alvarez penalty, not really a big fan of the fact that he didn't get to retake it & it was just ruled as a miss.

I'd have thought if he made contact with the ball with both feet, it would fall under the same umbrella of rules as say a goalkeeper leaving his line ie the penalty is retaken as opposed to being just awarded as a goal regardless or not if the player scored or missed.. unless that rule has also been changed?

Either way, if that is the case, it immediately needs rectified before the next round of games & for all future competitions under FIFA/UEFA. No way I want to see any game, let alone one of this magnitude effectively decided like that.

Totally agreed, and of course RM are the ones to benefit from this kind of thing.

Looks like Madrid got a bit lucky yesterday to get through but then they often do in the CL, Arsenal up next for them which could be an interesting match up but Arsenal might give Madrid more room to counter as Arsenal like to be on the front foot. Villa get PSG which will again be a tough game for both but PSG look more like a team now the superstar chasing days are gone.

You have to fancy Bayern and Barca in the other games but its all set up for a mouthwatering finish at least in the semi's and final, just be nice not to have Madrid win it again but they know how to get over the line more than anyone in Europe, tough for anyone to stop them now.

Damn, another game tonight, the suffering must go on I guess. Guess we aint got much to lose now so just as well through everything at it tonight, the only chance of salvaging anything from this season rests on it, not expecting much mind.

1-1 after 15 minutes, a penalty each, fast start to this game.

3-1 United, Fernandez hatrrick including 2 pens. One of our better performances tonight. Comedy ref as well to add to the entertainment.

Spurs also 3-1 up at the moment, all English back on, for the moment.

We actually scored 4 goals in a single game! :applaud

In reality though, good solid performance overall after the initial 10 minutes when we started so slowly. Passing started to become more snappy, we were direct when we needed to be & it could quite easily have been a cricket score.

Good confidence building score & performance, much needed also.

Rangers also made it through on Pens.

Lyon up next for us, Spurs have Frankfurt.

Was glad to see that. I was watching the Spurs game but getting the goal (only) highlights as they happened from the other games. Good day for PL clubs. Spurs or Utd at their best certainly have a chance of getting something in this competition, and Sociedad aren’t a walkover. Chelsea could (should) also win the ECL.

Be good if at least one could get to the final, both seems a little bit of stretch given how bad they have been all season. Bilbao will be very hard to stop making it to the final at their home ground and Lazio I dont know much about these days but are probably no push overs, at least for now we are in the next round lets see how things fair, injury wise etc from now on. If we lost Fernandez we would have no chance.

Chelsea seem way better than everyone in that comp, they really should at the very least make the final.

Champions league looks tough as well for either Arsenal or Villa to make it and only 1 of the two could potentially anyway. Not been a glittering English display in Europe so far but still might do enough to grab 5 spots on the CL next season.

It could be a good recovery from absolutely terrible seasons for both Spurs and Utd, particularly if one of them won it and qualified for the CL through it.

Yeah, ECL is Chelsea’s to lose. Fiorentina seem to keep getting to the final and losing. :D

Liverpool were the main PL hope. Arsenal at least have a non-zero chance while Villa can play without any pressure.

The PL did very well in the group stage and that will probably be enough by itself to get the 5 places compared to the performances of the other leagues. It would take a big comeback from one of the leagues (assuming Spain is the other) and also need most of the PL teams to drop out next round.

Surprised to see Henderson in the squad.

My friend got me a ticket to the league cup final! Better get ready and leave soon!
Can only imagine the state your in now, haha.

Few sore heads on Tyneside tomorrow morning I would imagine, quite the party they are having now I bet, that last 10 minutes must have felt like years. Congrats.

Liverpool really have taken their foot of the gas these past few weeks, they will be happy when they win the league no doubt but it looked like it was going to be a lot more at one stage.

Nice 3-0 wint at Leicester for United, a confident display and some really nice goals, good to see Hojlund get one at long last and Fernandez is on fire at the moment with another peach and MOTM display.

@Iceman Congrats mate, well deserved win and I'm glad you were able to be there to see it live! 👍
Amazing experience! Can’t believe we finally won something!! Will get some pics/videos up when I’ve sorted them out. I’ll be rewatching this forever more, nothing like a first trophy!

The Toon crowd were so loud and enthusiastic from the start. I was near the halfway line so it was very apparent the difference between the Liverpool and Newcastle fans, even though Liverpool fans are capable of making a lot of noise too.

Yep, a huge party. This means a lot more to Toon fans than a league cup could mean to a team that has recently won leagues and CLs.

We've had a little pick up of form, it was good to see Hojlund get a goal, De Ligt has become a real rock at the back and Bruno has started to settle into the double pivot role, although longterm I question his physicality for the role. Zirkzee has really turned a corner, he looks leaner and quicker and is starting to play with confidence. Best news though is Heaven isn't as badly injured as thought, he's hit the ground running here so glad his progress isn't going to be hampered too much.

The atmosphere looked incredible. :D I thought the midfield trio were excellent for you yesterday, they dominated Liverpool for the bulk of the game, and then Isak stepped up with that crucial second goal, he's been the best #9 in the PL this season.

Yep, they have been out of form as a group recently but looked very good yesterday. Was particularly surprised to see Joelinton back to his bruising aggressive best. Liverpool weren't ready for his physicality.

Also Trippier, Livramento and Barnes were unexpectedly very good cover for Hall and Gordon which I thought would put this tie beyond reach. Burn was great and even Schar who has been in bad form looked much better than recently. Also Pope looked a gamble a while back with Dubravka's form, but he did very well.

Pretty much everyone looked good because Liverpool just didn't bring it. They looked a bit tired physically, mentally and didn't have the aggressive press or urgency in forward movement. Maybe that 120 mins plus pens against PSG to go out of the CL (which they could have won) at home really hit them.

Well enjoy the moment, doesnt matter if its "just the league cup" there are plenty of sides that will end up with nothing this year and would take it now if they could. It might also lead to bigger things you never know, I can often recall SAF using league cup wins as stepping stones to building sides capable of more down the line, just getting one over the line gives the team belief and also just gets that monkey off your back of not winning anything for some time.

I bet the Toon army wont care a jot and will be loving this for sometime and over the summer and why the hell not. Eddie Howe was being talked about being sacked at the start of the season he might well end up with statue now, haha. Was also great you won fair and square being the better side and winning it without the need of ET or pens, it really could have been 3 or 4 before they got one at the end. No doubt that Isak and Burn goal will be played back over and over in many Newcastle fan homes. Seemed like a great atmosphere and gave the League cup a bit more meaning this year, nobody will forget the winners this season, not often that happens.
