On a slightly different note, but related to NATO and the events in Ukraine. Is there really a chance that France elects Le Pen? It would seem to me that the left would back Macron in a runoff, but I'm not that familiar with French politics. It also seems to me that it's time for people in the US to wake up and realize that we aren't the only country that has important issues. People here are so GD smug about the US being supremely important (and I'm not saying we aren't important to the world), but if this war in Ukraine can teach us anything, it's that international relations are key to world stability.

The chances seem to have ramped up recently. This will be a very dangerous move if it happens but it shows how vulnerable the West are to all the groundwork Putin has laid down with years of disinformation.

One thing I'm wondering is does the US have the ability to match Russia's output to the EU so that the EU can stop buying oil from Russia.

Not really. A pipeline is too fraught with environmental risks, along with a lot of really rough logistics. A pipeline through Turkey is also its own political issues.

Luckily, given the time involved, Europe should be fine come next winter, as they will set up other sources for their oil.

You would know better than me, but if Finland goes ahead with this, wouldn't Sweden be more likely to follow? A college buddy of mine lives in Sweden and has never been able to adjust to the culture there.
