They were Ukrainian's who spoke Russian and particularly in the east.

It's like Russia invading New York City or London because there's Russian speakers living in New York City and London. Or Mexico invading the United States because Mexicans immigrated to the United States and their children were born there.

It's the same bull justification Adolf Hitler gave for his invasions and land grabs, 'gotta takeover the lands where German speakers exist'.

They all wanted to redraw borders with military force using whatever spaghetti-thrown-on-the-wall tactics as propaganda. The people there were all used and bear the brunt of the aggressor's brutality.
