🇷🇺 Discussion: Relations with Russia

Russia Accuses Ukraine of Plot to Destroy Its Last Active Aircraft Carrier

How dare they try to destroy a Russian aircraft carrier, That's not fair. Why don't they go bomb a children's hospital or something?

I heard an argument yesterday that gave me pause.

NATO leaders aren't actually afraid of Russia invading Poland, the Baltics, etc because they're not actually making a meaningful effort to stop Russia. Investments in the militaries are currently modest, and they're just sending ancient spare parts to Ukraine, such as a dozen or so first-generation F16s.

I guess that makes sense.

But it could also be due to political impotence and decline-induced lethargy.

I hope that's not true....

One number I saw yesterday is that Canada is planning to reach its 2% of GDP on defense spending -- a NATO requirement -- by ... 2032. When politicians make plans 8 years ahead, they're basically not making plans. And that's from a very rich country. No indication of urgency.
