Film đź“˝ď¸Ź THE CINEMA LOUNGE

General Film
Did not realize how tough of a year Disney was having. Not just box office wise but quality wise. I was just reading about Wish's mediocre reception and saw an article listing out all of Disney's 2023 releases and none of them really lit the world on fire
It's a significant difference from only four years ago in 2019 when they had 7 out of the 10 top grossing films of the year all surpassing a billion. This year it'll only be two: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Little Mermaid, neither of which made it to that benchmark.

They had a bunch of heavyweights coincidentally all aligned for the same year in 2019, but the move from serious domination to wet fart territory this year is pretty stark.

Finally watched that 'Wonka' trailer.

WB with another L.

It’s from the Paddington guy, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s actually great. But Idk what kind of business it will do, as I don’t think Wonka’s an especially bankable character.

The original movie didn't do so well at the box office but grew more popular over time. The remake was a hit but that was almost entirely due to Johnny Depp being the biggest star in the world at the time thanks to Pirates of the Caribbean. Since this one is firmly banking on nostalgia for the original I can see it being somewhat successful.

I hope it's good but Chamalet just looks really uncomfortable in the role from the trailer.

But it looks like a fine family movie. If I don't enjoy it I hope families or kids do at least

Chalamet is one of the strongest leads of his generation, he's not going anywhere. Dude is going to be a movie star for the rest of his life and will probably only rise in prominence.

Eh, to me he is another white boy that ''hollywood' machine tried to jam down our throats. Yes, I've seen all of his films thus far. He is simply an ok actor to me. I just imagine a 27 year old McQueen punching him in the face and all is right.

Rewatched The Prestige for the first time in years, and I honestly forgot how incredible it was. And knowing the twists coming into it, it makes the movie even more rewarding.

The twist really worked on me. The misdirection was as good as any magician could've done. I mean, on second watch I realized that Bale's makeup isn't even that good. Yet I suspected nothing during my first watch.

Yeah also I noticed how they didn't even show the brother in that makeup for more than 2 seconds before cutting to another shot.

Except maybe for Charles Melton, everyone's picks were either too basic or too pretentious... or with Haynes somehow both.

May December

To me,

Julianne Moore>>>>Mehryl Streep. Always.

So this was a lifetime movie done via the pov of an auteur. This was fun, dark, comedic in moments where I think it wasn't suppose to be. The film carries the ham type plot on its sleeves and it was great. Portman goes toe to toe with Moore, but that Charles Melton fellow is a revelation, he can act his ass off. He definitely should get an oscar nom. Also, for those of us who grew up in the 90s, this story which is loosely based on was all the fuzz. Crazy to say outloud, but this story at least in my mind was the original student/teacher scandal that I can remember getting so much coverage. 90s had this case, OJ, 2pac murder back to back. One of the best films of the year for me.

8/10
