Film 📽️ THE CINEMA LOUNGE

General Film
I thought Wes Anderson really disappeared up his own ass with Asteroid City but I still wouldn't put it on any "Worst of 2023" list.

Asteroid City is one of the best films of the year. He disappeared up his own ass and found gold.

That list also included Carmen which is one of my favorites of the year.

Poor Things

Emma Stone deserves that second Oscar.

One thing I've always admired about Yorgos Lanthimos is his big swings without fear, I also believe he would be a serial killer had film making not worked out. Mark Ruffalo really swung for the fences, and he nearly pulled it off. At the very least one can tell he was having fun with this. lawd.

That bald Nolan got in the way or else we be talking about this bals auteur greek holding that director Oscar.

4/5

To each their own but IMO between this and The French Dispatch he's been coasting on style over substance.

I've seen a lot of people saying this and I just don't get it. Asteroid City might be the most thematically deep work in his career, IMO

Yeah, I guess that might be a matter of intrusiveness when it comes to his style honestly. It can be overbearing so it might distract from the text for some, but Asteroid City is so heavy imo.

I personally enjoyed The French Dispatch more than Asteroid City but the meta-ness of Asteroid City worked on me.

Brandon Cronenberg

I'm saddened by his movies not really catching on with audiences or even niche types. I've had a few drinks of Yamazaki 12 as I'm typing this, but I consider him to be on par with Robert Eggers, but only Eggers has managed to whole recognition at this point. 'Infinity Pool' still haunts me now. I'm on my third viewing now, it haunts me so much that I need to at least go in the opposite direction and watch something right away like 'Zola' to wash away the mood and feeling of Infinity Pool gives me...Mia Goth. Mia Goth. Mia Goth.

Yeah, they're selling the shock and awe, this is for adults guys look at the blood angle super hard

The black/white bit continues to be the most interesting looking aspect

You know what movie I didn't really care about as a kid, but I just rewatched yesterday and enjoyed it a lot more? The Santa Clause

Not that I disliked it as a kid, but it was never go to Christmas viewing and I think I only saw it once or twice. And I never even got around to the sequels.
But I was bored yesterday and threw it on and I really loved it. I'm not saying it's the greatest thing ever but I had a lot of fun with it. Will actually add it to my annual Christmas viewing.

The sequels though are another story. I didn't think those were good at all

i'm not sure i've seen the sequels. maybe the second? but definitely not the third
and apparently there is a show now?

Even as a kid I thought The Santa Clause was only okay, but I never liked it enough to watch the sequels. As far as holiday viewing goes, I'd probably choose to watch Jingle All The Way instead if given the choice. I've just never found Tim Allen funny. Not counting the Toy Story movies, Galaxy Quest is the only movie he's done that I actually really like and it's got nothing to do with him and everything to do with Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Rockwell and everything else about the movie.

Yeah the 2nd one was a very poorly done love story and the 3rd one I don't know what they were trying to do.

And yeah i didn't know there was a show until Casey Wilson called Tim Allen a ***** for his behavior on set...which honestly I have my own thoughts of Tim Allen as a person but Wilson's bringing it up seemed kinda small time. And I love Casey Wilson's work.

Anyway yeah that's how I found out there was a show haha. Only 6 eps a season I binged season 1 yesterday. It was ok. Cute little show. Some pretty funny "times are changing" jokes and meta humor that I liked

That's from War of the Worlds 2005 right?

I still think that is massively underrated. Justin Chatwin's character is annoying. But I still really enjoy it

Apart from the farfetched ending stemming from the pointless reason as to why Chatwin's character would want to run into an active combat zone in the first place, it's a solid movie. The tripod horn is one of the most terrifying sound effects put to film so I give it extra credit for that alone.

Russell Crowe as a drone pilot is almost make me interested in an otherwise super generic military film with 2 Hemsworths. The 2 lesser Hemsworths.

Ever since I saw The Batman I thought the Commish in it looked a lot like Russell Crowe and Crowe's look in that movie is really hammering it home.
