🥇Paris 2024 Summer Olympics

What made Bolt amazing was that his legs were so long that his strides had the potential to be massive, but at the same time, his legs pumped so fast that he actually got an extra 1 to 2 strides in, which meant that there was complete propulsion and power behind each stride he took.

Maybe “textbook” isn’t the word for him, but physical perfection might be.
Yep, cadence x stride length = speed, so when someone is winning at both they are going to rip up their field. :funny:

I think Bolt is built perfectly/textbook) for distances between 150m-200m where the start wouldn't be crucial, and with amazing top speed endurance. If he had anyone pushing him to the line in 200m finals I think he could have gone under 19 seconds. As you probably know, he started off as a 400m runner so it's no surprise that he was such a good finisher in both sprints.

I forget that he started as a 400m runner but that makes total sense given his starts.

I think your assessment of Bolt being great at 150-200 is very interesting. He, like Lyles is usually accelerating at the end of the 100 whereas others are starting to decelerate. But it always occurred to me that he was holding as long in the 200. Lyles seems to just have a ton in the tank in the 200.

But this is all memory of mine from watching Bolt and Lyles and nothing more scientific than my eyeballs. And let’s face it, I was always finding myself distracted just by watching the freakishly amazing physical spectacle that was his striding and speed. His feet spent absolutely no time on the ground. It was crazy.

Aaahhh I missed the 800m live but just watched it back, congrats Keely Hodgkinson, well controlled race and then a great burst on the home straight to take the title!!

Huge congratulations to Keely Hodgkinson! Really classy, mature performance from her, just left the field behind in the home stretch.

I'm looking forward to seeing her at future tournaments (only recently turned 23).

It could easily cost her titles and medals if they don't sort it out. There are others who will beat her in future finals with a poor start.

Yeah, I'd be very surprised if he didn't win the 200m. That's his main event where he's won the last 3 world championships so is fully experienced at getting that one over the line. Plus there is more room for error in the 200m and no-one is as fast as him in the closing phase, that also helped him just about make it through in the 100m. He'll be very confident of all 3 medals now as long as US don't drop the baton.

Sydney and Femke should both do the straight 400m as well as hurdles. Yeah, hope a relay final leg chase down is on the cards too.

You were right, it looked like inexperience on the part of Kishane Thompson at the end cost him. Such fine margins though that a number of these could have changed positions, great to see such a close 100m final. Even many of the great ones of the past weren't usually so close from 1st to 8th.

Is Julien Alfred running the 200m?

Given how big sprinting is in the US it's really surprising that the overall US athletics haven't stepped in as Sha'Carri is one of their biggest and brightest stars.

Who would you say is Noah Lyles biggest challenger for the 200m title?

Y'know I'm not sure if anyone has ever tried to double up on the 400m and 400m hurdles, I think the slighter longer distance, scheduling and the fact the hurdles is a very technical race have always been given as the reason top athletes don't attempt it.

It was insanely close, I mean the times right through to 8th were so strong, I've never seen a closer 100m final at the Olympics.

She won the event like an experienced champ, in full control all the way. Very proud!

Yes! Gabby Thomas is the favourite but Julien is the second favourite and it’s expected to be one of them 2 to win.

Bednarek, Tobogo and Knighton, but Lyles is way out in front. I wasn’t confident he’d get the 100m over the line but it will be a huge shock if he doesn’t win the 200. Like I think he’d have to false start or fall over to not win. :D

It’s very strange given how strong US coaching usually is. This is an obvious weakness area for one of their most high profile athletes as you say. You’d think they would have gone to town on it already, but I guess you can’t totally fix it by training alone and even if you do it can still return with big occasion nerves.

Good point. I feel like I’ve seen someone at least try but can’t remember. As you say, not only is hurdles very technical, 400m is a horrendous distance lol. I think it’s harder to recover from quickly enough compared to the shorter sprints. Bolt had potential in the 400m but said combining that with the shorter sprints (400 was his original event) was much more work involving much more hardcore and nuanced training than for the 100 and 200.

Yep, outside the medal positions, everyone from 4th to 8th set a world record time for finishing in that position in an Olympic final. So proper pressure for the medalists, especially as none of them were Bolt era talents that were capable of running a level faster.

Wish I wasn’t so busy right now. I missed pretty much all the swimming except that one Adam Peaty race. I love watching Olympic swimming, oh well guess in another 4 year’s time. Or might catch replays as I don’t know results - shame now most of them are pre-labelled with whoever won lol.

Yeah, the swimming event imo has the best moment for me so far, so I am sorry that you were missing out on a lot portion of it 🙁
Team GBR won the men's 4×200m freestyle relay, though thats the only gold for team GBR. in individual, Duncan Scott took silver (or bronze I forgot haha)

Only 7 days left? :csad: Oh well, I’ll be busy throughout that period but will at least catch the big athletics finals. Glad you’ve managed to keep up with so much of it and enjoyed it.

Ah...again, sorry to hear that. Hope you can catch up later for the finals.

And thank you..yeah I've been enjoying the event so much hehe, maybe because 3 years ago there were no spectators when Tokyo host the game, but right now I can feel more energy and more spirit of the Olympics...haha.

I like the swimming portions a lot, but I LOVE track and field. So the real stars of the show start now for me!

Noah Lyles…seriously, I am constantly amazed. He is slow out of the blocks, is awkward as heck in his first 20m, but accelerates through the last 60m. It’s amazing how much he overcomes in that final 40m. And this is consistently the case in most of his races. He is the funhouse mirror of Usain Bolt, who was a textbook 100m artist who could also win the 200m consistently. Lyles is the textbook 200m runner whose athleticism lets him best his competition in the 100m.

Noah "The World Champions of what?? the United States??" Lyles 😆

I find him a little obnoxious but he backed up his talk by winning the gold yesterday 👍 Respect! (Just don't get him near the basketball team lol)

Thanks, will check those out.

Josh Kerr beats rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the 1500m final but only gets silver as US (Hocker) surprisingly take the win after a late surge for the line.

Stacked 200m coming up. Gabby Thomas vs Julien Alfred battling for gold with the rest of the field going for bronze. Nice to see 2 Brits in there (Asher-Smith and Neita).

Gabby F'in Thomas. Absolute commanded that 200m.
She was dominant! Glad to see Julian Alfred pick up another medal. No medals for the Brits (wasn’t expecting any) but impressive to finish 4th and 5th.

Why didn't BBC show any artistic/synchronised swimming? It doesn't even seem to be on iplayer? I tuned in for that at the time given in the schedule and the were screening other things.

That race was awesome. The hype/feud video where the Kerr/Ingebrigsten were hating on each other before the race and then both losing to Hocker cracked me up.

They essentially took each other out of the race. Focusing solely on each other opened them up to being beaten by the others. Congrats to Hocker and Nuguse also almost overtook Kerr. I’m happy for Kerr to at least get a silver but Ingebrigtsen must be pissed off to not even get a medal. :D
