11 year old loses $50K hockey shot prize because twin brother took his place

The father should never have told them about the mistake in the first place.

Why? It's good parenting. His kid's lied. He showed them the consequences. If they were adults and did this it would be a lot worse (they essentially commited fraud). He has taught them a lesson that they will never forget. Good for him.

I find it suspicious that if they are going to donate the money instead than why don't they donate the same amount.

I agree about that. Donate the full 50k. None of this 20k B.S.

It only makes sense to donate the full amount. If they are going to take away the money they should at least put the money towards a good use rather than keep the majority of it themselves.

If I was a father of twins,I'd keep quiet and make sure both kids had money for the future.

I'm with Ultra Lantern. What's the point of having a twin if you can't do zany twin things.

Oh c'mon. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. All this will accomplish is making both the kids privately resent Dad for the next 20 years.

Wait...so, they don't get the 50K, but the company will donate LESS THAN HALF to charity? They're willing to give more money to people who don't need it than people who do?

I remember hearing about this a few weeks ago on ESPN. Sure the father did the right thing by telling the truth, but I also believe that it was stupid.

It wasn't the right thing. It was an idiot thinking it was the right thing.

A good parent would have put it into a college fund or something the kids needed. Wait til one of them needs braces that dad will be kicking himself. Dumbass parents.

50k is so much money, especially in this economy. Take what you can get. Was it alright for the dad to let the kid on the ice in the first place and take the shot ?

In this economy, that dad is ******ed.

I would've took the money from them and bought an awesome car. That'd show them.

To the dad... Remember what Ace Ventura said to the guy in the giant parrot outfit who scared off the albino pigeon? "iiiiiiDIOT!"

A lot of money to give up but the father corrected his mistake. Surprised that the insurance company donated even that much. Probably for good publicity but it went to a good cause.

The father didn't correct anything. He made a mistake. He's another example of a well-meaning idiot sticking his foot in it, when he should have realised the consequences of coming clean. He probably thought they were going to say "Here's the money anyway, thanks for being honest", but corporations don't act that way. Of course they would look for some loophole in order to keep the money. They should have given the family the money anyway, because so what if it was the winner's brother. An impossible shot was still made.

This seems so familiar. I'm sure there was another case (basketball related) of money being with-held for some ridiculous reason when a raffle winner sunk a shot from halfcourt (or even fullcourt).

What an idiot.

Why would he do that? This isn't elementary school where you get to be a teacher's pet. He must be kicking himself in the butt (I'm sure he'd never admit it though). Also, that company is extremely cheap. They should've donated the entire 50k to charity, instead they kept OVER 50% of the money :funny:

And now the father will have to pay for their college funds out of his own pocket. Honesty is a B*tch.

This would be a funny ending in a comedy movie for it. What a ****ing ******
