12 dead in shooting at California college bar

Looks like the suspect is David Ian Long, late 20s, bought the gun legally.

Another tragedy. Why does this keep happening?

I'd say because guns are easier to buy in the US, but that doesn't stop people getting shot in countries where guns are illegal... I do wonder though where (in the case of the US) people buying guns legally should first be checked over to ensure their mental health is in good order.

Background checks are a thing here in the States. I haven't read the story, so not sure if they had anything that should have been flagged in the past.

How many more people have to be murdered until the American government passes sensible legislation on gun ownership?
A lot. We've had so many mass shootings, even children, and all the gun rights activists do is talk about more guns solving the problem. Like digging a hole deeper and deeper to eventually dig yourself out of it.

Apparently, he used a semi-automatic handgun (which a good number of handguns actually are) and not an assault rifle. But, he modified it with an already-illegal extended magazine.

And, he was a Marine with a history of mental issues, including being involved in a domestic dispute. Nothing was done about it, of course. :csad:

Fairly obvious domestic abuse is reason to take a persons guns forever.

Pretty much every, unless you're counting revolvers. Which are just a slower form of semi-auto anyway.

Virginia Tech was handguns too, you're not going to stop people buying these, no court's going to sign off on any ban on those being constitutional. All you can do is try to flag the crazies, pre-empt purchase on mental grounds. That'll only stop the guys who have a record though.

At this point the mods should just create a sub forum for mass shootings so we can keep track.

There are so many guns out there now I don’t know what new laws can be done. Maybe a buyback program?

I'd say implementing stricter background checks on mental health history is the only viable step that can realistically be taken that even Republicans may get on board with. We're simply not going to see a ban on specific types of guns. You can scream until you're blue in the face about how that's the ideal course of action, but it simply won't happen.

There is no single solution. It will take many different methods, laws and a lot of societal changes to reduce gun violence.

But that is too much effort so why bother? This is the apathy we're dealing with.

Even then mental health may be viewed as subversive according to some. Perfectly sane sounding people are actually nuts.

When there is a systemic link between $$$$$ endorsement and mutual back slapping between NRA & Republican party (whether in power or within the control of Senate), the square root of jack s**t will be done sadly.

American heritage & money will out-vote sensible policy & forward thinking strategy in the hope of prevention of any more loss of life.

When you have a President that cares about no one but himself and beyond human contempt, nothing will resolve itself.

And now there is a wild fire in that area.

Sad lose of life in what is such a meaningless & senseless attack.. sadly yet again. :(

While I'm obviously for almost a complete ban or at least have regulations in place that rival other developed countries around the world, the reality is if somebody is in that bad a state that they want to harm someone they will find a way to do so. Obviously some things will just be completely unavoidable when it involves something that's everyday like a car, knife or something of the like.. but in most of these cases in the US, these guys are buying these firearms legally & obtain them legally.

Whatever regulations are in place currently, which then differ state to state but that's another argument, whatever backround checks, they aren't effective enough, obviously, as this same conversation seems to roll around every few months.

So, basically he's a nut raving about how he'll inevitably be labelled a nut for shooting a bunch of people because "life is boring".

Sounds like a nut.
