So yep I am still waiting to really get excited about collecting comics again. Would love to see RYV become ASM and the Reilly Scarlet Spider be good...

Post all your 2017 Bought/Thoughts here...

IvX #1&2- A strong start for the new X-event. Both sides are given decent motivation (though the X-Men seem very aggressive, and the Inhumans seem very stubborn) the major characters all have a unique voice, and the art is phenomenal. Hopefully this holds up, X-events are usually so much better than the big Avengers events that I don't know why Marvel doesn't just stick with the X-stories.

Unworthy Thor #3- So damn good. Coipel should really be the only guy allowed to draw Thor (well, maybe Ribic too). The spectacle is fantastic, but so is the emotion. Thor is gunna have a tough road ahead of him, but the payoff should be wonderfully cathartic. Also, never have I loved Beta Ray Bill as much as I do in this story. Dude's noble as f**k.

Old Man Logan #16 Intriguing and mysterious new story. Logan finds himself back in the wastelands, but that is intercut with what is basically "Aliens with Wolverine". It'll be interesting to see how the two plots intersect and play off each other. But as always, the writing is solid and the art is great.

I wouldn't get back to collecting individual issues myself although I'm tempted to after spending some time on these forums looking at TV shows, movies, thinking back to them somewhat.

I think my main issue is the character's been around for so long, so many stories, even with a re-boot it's a story without a beginning, middle, and end. It goes on and on and we know there's off limit areas (character never die or supervillain ultimately win) so it just seems to get confounded when you have a new baddie show up each story arc after story arc with little else going on. I mean comic arcs very much could be likened to a kid sitting in his sandbox with various action figures smashing them together.

I suppose now things are more continuation based than perhaps in the 90's or 80's but really can't see how it's so novel as to bring adults into reading them on a mainstream basis although new devices like kindle, nook, and so forth are certainly encouraging the curious dipping one's foot into this from time to time as the comics wouldn't be cluttering the house.

I guess I'm at a point where it would be hard for myself to begin collecting again unless really excited about the storylines taking place. To be excited about it, the storyline needs to feel contained and anything goes. Perhaps an alternate universe where they can kill characters, develop them moreso, and take time with storylines giving critical eye to detail and background artwork is necessary. I think digital comics is better as can fit more text without need for blocking part of picture too.

As far as collecting goes, I think the time has passed where people feel these could be valuable one day... Antiques or some other thing that requires specific sort of knowledge would be interesting though.

If anyone has any cool collecting ideas that not clutter up house too much I'm game. Just don't know about comics or action figures. I'm at an age where I have someone come over, I'd rather it be something I can show rather than feel like hiding it... If I'm going to get over that, the medium needs to change drastically in numerous ways. Even then, I'd like something more culturally relevant. Heck, collecting old lamps or clocks would be interesting but just don't have room for it. Cars are always neat but again not big enough garage. Oh well...

Like MANY long time fans I dropped most of my Marvel titles as well in this new horsecrap PC era.

I still have a pull list but it's down to Black Widow, Daredevil, Old Man Logan, Squadron Supreme, Uncanny X-Men and this X-Men vs Inhumans dust up. Even those are more "I don't hate them" type reads.

Daredevil taking on Bullseye again has me interested even though the story is teamed up with a muscle-bound and tattooed ass kicking Catholic priest. Dark Daredevil is a strange read but I'm still reading.

It's only a matter of time before TRUE sales numbers force them to do something drastic and maybe fire these *****ebag snowflake writers/editors.

Have these last few years be a bad dream or something? "Billionaire" Peter Parker's delusion maybe? All this never happened...

Hey, if everyone goes out and buys Spider-man: Renew Your Vows and makes it number 1, maybe Marvel makes that the defacto universe where OMD never happened, and the X-Men are still alive and relevant.... lol

I hadn't read comics regularly for decades, but I've gotten back into the habit with digital editions. Amazon had a fantastic sale a few weeks ago on collected editions, and I bought tablet versions of Old Man Logan, The Winter Soldier, King & Walta's Vision and Fraction & Aja's Hawkeye for between $2.99 and $3.99 a piece. I wouldn't buy single copies at that price level - I started collecting when they were $0.20 a copy - but I can justify buying six or more books at that amount.

One of the benefits of taking an extended hiatus is that there are lots of books that I missed out on. Over the past few years I've bought Avengers: Disassembled, Runaways, Marvels, Secret War, Annihilation and Abnett & Lanning's GOTG and many more on the Marvel App during their weekly sales, never paying more than four bucks a pop. I've probably have more books on the cloud than I do in my storage tubs from back in the day.

I know most people on this forum will love the new issue of Champions, but it ruined the whole book for me. The character that Waid created to represent Donald Trump was the media version of Trump and not the Trump as he truly is. And his rendition of Trump supporters (i.e. me) is so insulting and inaccurate that it just completely killed what had been my favorite Marvel book.

The media rendition of Trump, and by extension Mark Waid's rendition of Trump, creates hatred and fear like how they claim Trump creates hatred and fear. It's ridiculous. I'm disappointed in Waid and Marvel both for spreading hate and pretending it's hope or fighting injustice or however they want to label it.

I've barely enjoyed Marvel for years. Between this and all the negativity and hatred that the writers spew on Twitter on a regular basis has just soured me on them. I'm not a fan of people spreading hate and I see it from people like Waid and Dan Slott far more than I've ever seen it from Trump.

Sorry, political rant over. If you hate Trump and want to further that hate... pick up Champions. You'll love it.

Well then clearly you had your head as far in the sand as all the rest of his devotees throughout the campaign, Slott never made fun of disabled people, attempted to delegitimize our entire political process, or called Mexicans druggy rapists. Mark Waid never proposed banning an entire religion from immigrating to the US.

F*** Herr Trump
Might just have to go pick the issue up

And you've just proven why crap like what Mark Waid wrote and the media reports is dangerous.

1) Trump never mocked the handicap. That's been 100% disproven ad nauseum, yet you still believe it somehow.

2) Trump didn't say Mexicans are druggy rapists. He said some of them coming through the border were druggy rapists... which is true. In an oddly worded way, he also stated that good people come through the border. He's since elaborated what he meant. Yet, liberals/media/comic book writers like to cling to the negative and pretend it's all he's ever said.

3) In what way did he try to deligitimize our political process? He went through it exactly how every other president has. If you're talking about the Russian hoax, then that's another example of media misleading. There is yet to be any sort of proof of that actually happening. In fact, there have been investigations into any sort of connection by the government and STILL there hasn't been anything found. As of now there is as much proof Trump worked with Russia as there is Bush finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Yet... liberals take it as gospel because the media and people like Mark Waid relay it as fact. Though I do find it funny that with absolutely no connection or evidence found all this time, suddenly liberals are starting to swing from Trump being a puppet of Putin to Trump being a puppet of one of his cabinet picks. Forget the guy's name.

4) Donald Trump has also never advocated banning an entire religion from entering the country. Muslims live here. Muslims can still come here to this very day uninhibited. There is only a TEMPORARY traveling ban (shorter than the ban Obama put on Iraq while he was president) from 7 out of something like 49 Muslim countries (which were flagged by Obama's administration) while they work on a stronger vetting process. Then they'll open it up again. And is their religion the reason? No, obviously not or it would have been all Muslims.

All the points you made do not match up with the things Trump has said or done. They are twisted and perverted versions of half truths spread by media, Hollywood, and apparently comic book writers so that gullible liberals have something to hate together. (Cause... you know... it's cool for all these peace-loving, all-inclusive progressives to hate, ridicule, curse, and harm people they don't agree with apparently. It's their constitutional right I hear).

It further divides the country and puts people in danger in ways that Trump has yet to do. But no... by all means... let's write a comic depicting him as Hitleresque and his followers (half the country mind you) as complete bigotted homophobes! Because that's... you know... accurate. :whatever:

1) what's this?:
http://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2015/11/26/donald-trump-mocks-reporter-with-disability-berman-sot-ac.cnn

2) I didn't say he said "all Mexicans", but he did create an image of immigrants, the vast majority of whom are peaceful and want nothing but to make a living, as violent criminals

3) He delegitimized the process by saying if he didn't win it would be because it was rigged. And by claiming- after he did win despite receiving 3 million fewer votes- that there was still voter fraud despite having 0 f***ing evidence. And by filling his cabinet with fellow con-men. And by having no experience for the job, but still conning millions into believing he could do it. He's single-handedly made the presidency into a joke, something not even W accomplished.

4) I'm not talking about his current ban, but rather his range of proposals throughout the campaign, which went from him saying an outright ban, to softening it to "extreme vetting" (despite the fact our vetting of refugees is already ridiculously stringent). And yes, he didn't ban people from all the Muslim countries, (he, and our country in general, have too many business ties to screw over the Saudis, for instance) But to ban people including children, who need help and refuge when there is no actionable intelligence of a threat, and there is no evidence of any refugees becoming radicalized, is ridiculous and inhumane. It's not illegal or unconstitutional, but it is morally reprehensible.

I haven't read the issue, so I don't know what the depiction looked like. But if it featured his supporters at a rally, well those supporters in the real world are the more vocal and aggressive supporters. His campaign rallies were filled with hateful chants and aggressive behavior. But unless the comic showed his supporters at home watching on TV all wearing Klan hoods, he didn't necessarily misrepresent all his supporters, just depicted the most zealous followers.

Just go with spider man renew your vows. its the one that seem to be doing it for alot of people of late. Give it a try as series read. That's all I'll say on this.

I'm not going to get into a political debate here. But at least look in into that handicap thing more. There's a good video showing that that motion is what he uses to depict being flustered. He's done it for years about a wide range of people including himself.

I found that it's easier to just ignore the hate filled anti-Trump people who are lashing out and throwing tantrums liked spoiled children. They want to hate and need to vent for whatever reason. Hopefully like a simple child, they will cry themselves out and settle down.

They'll buy in to stereotypes and myths because they need to and certainly want to do so. Repeating false propaganda that fits their agenda often enough so that lies are taken as truth by impressionable fools. Perception is reality in their book and reinforcing false narratives usually works for them. After all, their angry "movement" gets all of their news/talking points from late night talk shows, SNL skits and an extreme leftist media.

Trump isn't perfect by any means but he is our president and we all should be on board in hoping for success, period.

this from the side that s**t their pants over nothing for the past 8 years.
project much?

the levels of hypocrisy present in that comment are through the f***ing roof

JH, I'm sorry I responded, should've let the bait go
and the above poster can go f*** themselves

Sorry, let's get back to comic book reviews

I could so destroy this comment if I so desired, but I won't because this isn't a political debate thread. It's an especially humorous thing to say too because, though I do lean conservative, I'm not strictly speaking a republican and actually voted for Obama his first term and defended him often (though liberals who like to think he was Jesus Christ who did nothing wrong are blind and ignorant). Unlike many online liberals right now, I didn't whine or wish ill-will on Obama, Michelle, and his family and pray for them to fail. Only an idiot would do that as it would mean bad things for the country... you and me included.

There was no bait intended as it was a genuine review of a comic book. It was a horribly conceived piece of propaganda that destroyed any interest I had in one of the few good comics left at Marvel. But as a person who seems to buy into the media version of Trump... (no snarkiness meant in this) you'll actually probably really enjoy it. I expect the comic book community and creators to praise it as the best book of the year misguided though it may be.

the majority of that comment wasn't directed at you

so anyway, would anyone who is not now on my ignore list like to discuss some friggin comics?

What do you think about the newly announced Spectacular Spider-Man Series from Chip Zdarsky? So long as editorial doesn't force any punitive status quo changes, I'm pretty excited for it!

Im interested to find out more, all they've indicated so far is it's kind of back-to-basics, which is apparently what they're doing with all the books (and a positive sign, imo)

now if only they'd go back-to-basics on the price of the comics, we'd be all set, lol

Anyone seen the change in Scarlet Spider's costume from the Spider-Gwen/Spidercide mash-up (or Spider Gwen Reilly as I was referring to it) back to the classic Scarlet Spider costume? Apparently Ben's costume got mixed reactions at best.

As a comic collector for 32 years (I'm 40 btw) the only thing I've stopped is buying single issues and going straigt for collected editions, I can no longer justify the $2.99 or $3.99 price tag that comics have risen too.

Batman and Superman are my most favorites, when it comes to Spider-Man I thought I liked him I think he's gone through the most changes, reboots, retcons and whatnot. I mean first with the Clone Saga, then BND, then OMD, then Civil War in which he revealed his identity to the public but was then later retconned, now we have Marvel Now which frankly I don't know what it's about.

When I want classic Spidey I'll stick to my bootlegs of Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends.

Renew Your Vows is the most Spider-Man a Spider-Man comic has felt in ages, it's not a groundbreaking comic or anything but it's well told, well-characterized, well drawn- what more can you ask for?

I tried coming back to Slott's Spidey for the Clone Conspiracy, but it just wasn't my thing. And I like clones, mind you. That's what I came back for lol. Seems like Marvel is trying to salvage what that story did to Ben Reilly by giving fans the classic Scarlet Spider suit again soon at the very least. I won't lie, either- that makes me want to buy the book more if he gets rid of that awful new suit pretty soon.

You and I are the same person. Heh. Yeah, I stopped buying floppies a few years ago (midway through Avengers vs X-Men) and buy trades now. Actually I download them (frowned upon, I know) so that I don't get anything spoiled by waiting, and then I buy the tpbs when they come out. Batman is also one of my favorites right now, and while I like Superman, I tend to find I get bored of it when it's not dealing directly with the family aspect.

And yeah, Spider-Man's been horrid since OMD. I've tried coming back time and again and have hated it every time (save for some early issues of the Big Time era that were admittedly good). I'm enjoying Renew Your Vows for the sake of what the comic is, but MJ's costume is pretty crappy looking and the story itself is just mediocre. Hopefully it'll get better on that front very soon.

I got excited for about 30 seconds when I read that Ben Reilly came back, but then I reminded myself that this is Marvel handling the Spider-Man universe. They're experts at absolutely screwing up characters that I love. So I figure I'll wait and if it gets good reviews and they do Ben any sort of justice, maybe I'll pick up the trade. But yeah, I saw that horrible suit and that did nothing toward my wanting to actually check it out. And this from someone who still today considers the Scarlet Spider a favorite character... MAYBE my favorite character. I just bought the Spider-Man Clone Saga Omnibus for God's sake.

What the heck happened in ALL STAR BATMAN last week? #9 I think. Snyder turned Ra's into a terrorist, like Mandarin in Iron Man 3? Ok. Then Bruce confronted Ra's and was shot in the head, but Catwoman was digitally impersonating him the whole time? So he healed and stood right up? I don't if I smoked too much or not enough. Makes me ready to jump ship, though, that's for sure.

BEN REILLY: SCARLET SPIDER #1 was weird too. I read and enjoyed Slott's Clone Conspiracy, and he effectively made Ben a bad guy, which is fine, but he ran away, he's crazy, and he's not sure if he wants to be good or bad? Setting up shop in Vegas, and he stole that God awful suit from a cosplayer, and doesn't want Peter to find out...again, I don't know. I don't think thnis series will be for me. And anyone else looking for Justice for Ben will probably be disappointed.

BATMAN 21 & FLASH 21 were both cool. I'm enjoying these issues a lot. The one minute Batman vs Reverse Flash was awesome and Fabok can do no wrong. They met Thomas Wayne and we'll see where this goes. I'm in. I'm hoping they find Dr. Manhattan and he confirms that, yes, he created the DC Universe and all the reboots are him playing with his toys. We'll see.

Isn't Renew Your Vows a completely alternate universe?
