After putting into motion a female-centric Ghostbusters, Sony Pictures is looking at gender-bending another one of its budding franchises, 21 Jump Street.

Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs, writers who are working on Comedy Central’s buzzy Broad City, have been hired to write a female-driven Jump Street spinoff.

The move is aimed to broaden the franchise base for the franchise-light studio that is seeking ways to create its own cinematic universes.

Ghostbusters is on the forefront of the expansion, with not only a female-centric version that shoots this summer under the direction of Paul Feig and stars Melissa McCarthy among others, but a whole universe is being planned.

Men In Black is also getting a broadening of its definition with a cross-over being developed with 21 Jump Street for a feature to star Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.

The two Jump Street movies have grossed over $530 million for Sony.

Aniello and Downs are repped by UTA and 3 Arts Entertainment.

Damnit. Stupid "cinematic universe" crap...

Well Marvel has certainly started a new trend. I'm intrigued by the MIB and 21 Jump Street crossover.

Eh, I could see this having potential. Broad City's a great show and I could see them having some fun with spinoff or cinematic universe humour like how 21 had reboot humour and 22 had sequel humour.

Superheroes work as a "cinematic universe" because with Marvel and DC comics all their heroes do exist in the same universe. Trying to do it with properties that don't have that foundation is missing the point.

Perfectly said.

‘Jump Street’ Franchise Expands With Female-Driven Spinoff, ‘Men in Black’ Crossover
Sony has hired “Broad City” writers Lucia Aniello and Paul Downs to write one of two scripts that will take the series in a new direction

Jeff Sneider said:
Sony Pictures will continue to grow its popular “Jump Street” universe, commissioning dual development of both a female-driven spinoff and a franchise crossover with “Men in Black” that was originally outlined in its leaked emails, TheWrap has learned.

As for the “Men in Black” crossover, which writer-producer-star Hill was especially excited about in the leaked Sony emails, it remains unclear whether Will Smith would be involved, let alone Tommy Lee Jones or Josh Brolin.

“Men in Black 3” had the franchise’s highest global haul, with $624 million worldwide, though it also had the lowest domestic gross in the series, with only $179 million in the U.S. That indicates that while international interest has never been higher, American audiences are growing weary of “MIB.” “Jump Street,” on the other hand, has had higher domestic grosses than foreign grosses, so a combination of the two franchises may prove to be more beneficial to Sony at the worldwide box office.

Im surprised the amount of people I see around the internet having support for the MIB/JUmp Street Crossover.

That sounds like the stupidest idea. 2 franchises that don't need to be crossed over at all.

I'd much rather support a Female Jump Street movie that'll eventually cross into Tatum and Hill's movies over MIB/Jump Street. That is straight up jumping the shark.

Honestly, MIB/JUmp Street is so crazy it might actually work...

I don't know, one's more grounded in reality and the other is something based off a comic book. I saw on Facebook a news item where Sony is interested in reviving Bad Boys 3. That's a more sensible crossover.

‘21 Jump Street’ Female Spinoff Taps Rodney Rothman to Write and Direct

‘21 Jump Street’ Female Spinoff Taps Rodney Rothman to Write and Direct

Rodney Rothman, who penned “22 Jump Street,” has come on to write and possibly direct a spinoff to Sony’s “21 Jump Street” franchise that would focus on two female undercover cops.

Sony is still developing “MIB 23,” which combines the “21 Jump Street” universe with the “Men in Black” one, and this latest project is just another property to build on the popular series.

Rothman also penned the script to “MIB 23.” Neal Moritz is producing.

The film revolves around two female cops who go undercover as students in some sort of school setting. The previous two “Jump Street” pics starred Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, with the first film set at a high school and the second based at a college. “21 Jump Street” grossed $201.6 million worldwide in 2012 and the follow-up made $331.3 million two years later.

Hill and Tatum are still attached to return to “MIB 23,” but it’s unknown if they will have a part in this latest spinoff.

Rothman most recently wrote the comedy “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” starring Andy Samberg. He is repped by UTA.

Deadline Hollywood first reported the news.

I'm glad female Jump Street is going ahead while the wacky MIB crossover is slowly going to development hell.

This is getting ridiculous.
Why gender-bend existing movies / properties? If they want female-driven franchises, they should come up with good female-driven movies, which can be turned into a franchise if they're successful.

wasn't Booker the 21 Jumpstreet spinoff?

1) they think they can make money on it (same reason they make anything, really)

2) it doesn't require any creativity

I don't think "Hey, it's 21 Jump Street... but with girls" will hit the audiences hard like the original two movies did.
Just like I don't think Sandra Bullock's Ocean will be a hit box office smash.
The truth is, as much as Hollywood like to toot its feminist horn nowadays, they did it much better back in the day.
Just look at Ellen Ripley in the Alien movies, the women in The Addams Family, Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs.
And for every strong character you get nowadays, like Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, etc. there are dozens of "Hey, it's that kind of movie... but now with a woman!" being made, which is frankly... lazy and stupid.
Just like Hollywood's recent obsession with turning everything into a 'cinematic universe' and only making huge tentpoles.

There is very little female franchises. So of course in a time when hollywood makes almost only sequels, prequels, remakes and spin-off's there would use male franchises to start female franchises.

But i dont understand why they can make male spin-offs for male but not for female. If i remember correctly there was a lot of positive reaction for a ghostbuster movie that would be a spin-off from the original franchise.

This female *franchise* thing is stupid. It just reeks of forced political correctness. Create something original, for Christ's sake.
