Homecoming 2's Company, 3's A Lounge - Part 6

So, I just got done with watching TASM2 after a long time, and I said earlier I would post my feedback. I'll just jot down some of my thoughts and opinions in no particular order:

- It felt really good seeing the film, honestly. It almost felt like I was watching it for the first time.

- They didn't need to repeat Peter being dropped off at Ben and May's house.

- I can't say enough about Spidey's entrance in this film. It's perfect.

- Too many civilians lost in the traffic chase.

- For some reason, this time around Electro didn't seem too bad. He could have used a little more development, and I still hate how there was no real explanation for his powers (they had a perfect chance to do that when Kafka is working on him). However, if those two things were worked on a little bit, he could have been a really good villain.

- The Times Square fight is awesome.

- Peter and Aunt May's revelation scene is outstanding.

- Why did Menken and company simply let a billionaire walk out of Oscorp?

- Peter and Gwen's relationship is something that will be missed in the rest of this series. I'm interested to see how the absence of this element will effect the remainder of it.

- DeHaan's acting would have set a whole new standard for Harry/Goblin if he was given more time.

- We needed more Chris Cooper, especially if he's going to be coming back. Otherwise, there's not much of an understanding or connection between him and the audience at all.

- Peter couldn't have come up with a better excuse than "I'm sure he's sensitive" in front of Harry?

- Just because Peter said Spider-Man gives people hope, and he took his picture for the Bugle, was that enough to suspect Peter can reach him personally and ask him to meet Harry?

- Midtown's second brightest student needs to remember 8th grade Science.

- Gwen's death is perfect.

- The last scene should have been the discussion between Harry and Fiers.

- We needed just a little bit more of May. Not a damn spinoff, but just a scene or two between her and Peter.

- The fight between Electro and Spidey is pure eye candy.

- The cop that helped Gwen and Spidey might want to report that Gwen was last seen with him.

- Is it really that easy for Peter to leave May behind and follow Gwen? I know what it feels like to love a woman, but considering how much stress May expressed to Peter earlier in the film, hopefully most of what he says to Gwen is just in the heat of the moment.

- Other than maybe the beginning of this film, Rhino is completely useless. He's useful for S6, not TASM2. The last scene almost feels like the start of a new film.

That's all I can think of for now. There's a couple more flaws that I mentioned, ones I haven't expressed or noticed before, but I really tried to neutrally analyze this film the same way I do with everything else that I watch. There's many moments that I wouldn't change a single thing about. However, there's also some that just don't bode well with me at all. No matter what, though, I'm sure I'll still watch it over and over again for the scenes that I liked, and also because it's a Spidey film.

I hate to give it a new low, and I really do think they had the opportunity to make it perfect with this cast, but I have to be honest. I do think this is the lowest my rating will ever get, though, because there's too many moments I enjoy for it to be lower than a 7.

Old rating: 7.5/10

New rating: 7/10

I'm really bad at rating movies, because it changes all the time. It's almost like it depends on my mood. When we get S6 news I'll probably watch TASM1 and TASM2 back to back.

I love that Spidey is so well-loved across the globe. I bet if you showed just about anyone a picture of Spider-Man, they'd know who it is. He's a cultural icon. And it's great how he inspires so many people...Lee and Ditko should be proud.

I just wish the quality of his media would match the quantity at which he is selling.

Oh yes. Spidey is the supehero and I ain't even mad.

I forgot to type in "box office grossing".
$1.3 Billion is nice income for the webhead.

I see.

Indeed, it is.

Definitely. We spend so much time discussing the movies, we lose sight of what a juggernaut Spider-Man is. There's a reason why Bob Iger refers to the Marvel franchise as the Spider-Man brand.

And right he is.

Sometimes I wonder how damn desperate Marvel must've been when they sold away Spider-Man to Sony. They're doing just fine without him, tbh, but I still want my favourite dude with the Avengers some day.

- Best scene in the film.

- It will be interesting. Their love/relationship was the biggest plus for these past two movies and now that is gone. It's going to be tough to recover what they've lost. It's probably in their best interest to avoid the love angle for the next film or two.

- I liked Dehaan and Cooper but they ruined the Goblin saga in this movie. I'm not sure what steps they could take to remedy their choice but so far I'm disappointed in how their choice turned out. This was one of the worst Goblin storylines I've seen yet, in any form of media.

- The idea that Peter is the guy photographing Spidey must mean he's the one to contact to get a hold of Spider-Man is an idea that goes back to the comics and has been utilized in almost every adaptation, including some of the animated series as well as SM1 and SM2.

- They really underplayed Peter's intelligence in the second film and that kinda sucks. Though the line from Gwen, "and that's why you were second!" was really cute so I'll give it a pass.

- Her death scene was awesome.

I've found that upon repeated viewings my rating went down as well. I'm at a 6/10 with maybe a 6.5/10.

That's kind of like what I did before watching TASM2 in theaters. I went back and saw the original trilogy as well as TASM1.

By the way, TASM1 stands at a solid 8.5 for me. I was very excited for TASM2 after seeing it.

- One thing that bothers me most about Goblin in this film is the fact that they had a great actor for the role. I was very much looking forward to DeHaan in this role when I found out about him being casted, but the writing just didn't do him justice.

- That's something I've understood in the comics, but I think they need something more for the movies to explain that. It wasn't even something I thought about (because I'm so used to the comics) until yesterday. When I walked out of the theater after seeing TASM2 with my dad, he mentioned this to me and all these months later I'm feeling the same.

- Being able to calculate algorithms and stooping down to not knowing the basics of 8th grade level Science is indeed a major step down. I loved how Gwen competed with Peter in TASM1 as well, but it didn't work well in TASM2 because it was just too easy for her.

It really is a strange feeling, you know? I've never had such mixed feelings about a film, and I guess that's why I want to see what they do with S6. I always either entirely love a film or hate it, but there still is an enjoyment factor in this film for me that keeps it afloat at a 7. It's like I want to give the producers credit because some scenes were brilliant, but other times it seemed like they didn't care at all.

Edit: Which scene did you think was the best?

I usually rate movies by weighing the things I liked against the things I didn't like. Sometimes I find it to be ok, meh, bad, good, terrible, great, s*****, amazing.
Or something like that. It sometimes changes over time, depending on the movie.

So, I saw FKA twigs at the Metro in Chicago last night, one of the most flat-out amazing shows I've ever been to, probably tied with My Bloody Valentine at the Aragon Ballroom last year. Anyone been to any great shows this year?

He wasn't in it enough, so I can't really say anything about TASM-2s' Rhino.

Actually, for the little we saw of him in the Rhino armor, I'll be honest that I actually liked him. He was big, not bright, and you can tell that Giamatti had fun with it. I can enjoy most rolls if I can tell that the actor is having fun with it.

That suit is pretty cool.

Did I tell you guys that I finally saw Guardians of the Galaxy? I thought more Star Trek (reboot) and less Star Wars watching it.

Yeah, the whole Peter takes pictures means he knows Spidey is overdone. It works better in some iterations over others.

Dumbing down Peter is a no-no.

It is a strange feeling, I guess. I'd call it more of a disappointed feel because the good parts of the movie show what it was capable of being.

I was referring to the scene between May and Peter, "you're my boy" as being the one I felt was the best.

No surprise there, TSSM has a fun Rhino.
TASM 2 has........

Yes, indeed.

In TASM2, I think they tried TOO hard to make Gwen "awesome". Hence the 8th Grade science thing...

"oooh, she has to be PERFECT, like better than Peter."

It's silly.

I don't think they dumbed Peter down necessarily, they just wanted to make them on equal terms intellectually. Stone as Gwen was really a breath of fresh air coming after Dunst as MJ being a perpetual damsel in distress. I really liked the fact that she was instrumental in defeating both the Lizard and Electro. "She saves him more than he saves her", as Stone herself put it.

Yes, but they tried too hard to make her "perfect". The thing is, by making her perfect, by making her without any real flaws... she becomes kinda hard to relate to.

While she is miles ahead of Dunst's MJ, I still have problems with Emma's Gwen.

I don't think we've ever had a perfect version of a Spidey character in this franchise. Garfield's Spidey and Molina's Doc Ock are the only two that come close to me, maybe Stone's Gwen.

I didn't mean "perfect" as in the perfect rendition of Gwen Stacy, I kinda meant perfect as in, she's a perfect human being. :oldrazz:

IMO, Garfield's Peter and Spidey are as close to perfect as we've ever gotten.

Well, I mean there certainly aspects of Gwen's character that were relatable, she was almost a female version of Peter. Plus, it's scientifically impossible for me to not love a character played by Emma Stone :oldrazz: I'm really happy that Woodley was cut out, not because I disliked the casting, but I really disliked the idea of another love triangle.

I wouldn't say she's a female version of Peter, she's more... IDK what to call her.

Then again, I think Harry Osborn is the second most interesting character in the series, so who am I to say anything? :funny:

I really really hope DeHaan comes back, he was miles ahead of Franco. That being said, I felt more sympathy for Max than I did for Harry. Maybe because I related to Max's loneliness more? I've felt that way so many times.

While Franco's Harry is closer to the comics in terms of storyline and character, Dane is just a fantastic actor. Future Oscar winner, even!

Yeah, I can relate to Max too. I think it's easier because almost everybody has felt a sense of loneliness before, and maybe even obsession over the smallest things.

That's why I don't understand why people think Max didn't have a clear motivation. He thought he finally found someone who gave a **** about him, and he got let down. I can't think of a simpler motive for revenge. Sure, pre-transformation Max was a bit corny and rushed, but Foxx is too skilled of an actor to let a script hamstring him. Electro was actually one of the positives of TASM2 for me.
