Playstation 30 Years of Playstation: Your Favorite Games

An anniversary seems as good an excuse as any for an excessive number of pictures. Happy 30 years.

There have been some great scores in those 30 years, so as I replay Horizon: Forbidden West, a few favourites from that:

My 10 Favorite Playstation Exclusives

10. The Last of Us (2013) PS3

Teamwork. Yeah.

9. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009) PS3

All that promise of the original game, realized.

8. Onimusha: Warlords (2001) PS2

Before I became Leonsexual, I was a Samanosuke ****.

7. Final Fantasy VII (1997) PS1
Final-Fantasy-VII-Cloud.jpg

There are better Final Fantasys (I'm looking at you IX). But only one taught me to love, hate, and to multicast Knights of the Round Table.

6. Devil May Cry (2001) PS2
ranking-dmc-4.jpg

A game so stylish, it created it's own genre.

5. Final Fantasy VII: Remake/Rebirth (2020, 2024) PS4/5

Sometimes dreams do come true.

4. Metal Gear Solid (1998) PS1

When my bro and I found the double jewel case at the mall kiosk, little did we know the odyssey we were about to embark on. Tactical espionage action at it's finest. Just remember to switch controller slot.

3. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004) PS2

There was no topping MGS. Instead, like a treefrog, Kojima went and made his fantasy Rambo/Bond game. Thank the Maker he did.

2. Bloodborne (2015) PS4

Some games just ****.

1. God of War, God of War Ragnarok (2018, 2022) PS4/5

Games can grow, they can change, they can heal. Just like us.

We're talking exclusive PlayStation games per generation, right? So if I had to pick one for each...

Ps1: Digimon World 2. I still play it to this day; literally played it a few minutes ago.

Ps2: Tekken Tag Tournament. As far as I'm concerned, the name Tekken is still synonymous with the name PlayStation, and this was a launch title.

Ps3: Littlebigplanet 2. In my opinion, one of the best Ps3 games ever.

Ps4: Uncharted 4. It's been a very long time since I've been highly anticipating a game's launch like I waited for this game. Not only that, it became my go-to multiplayer for a long time, beating out CoD for a while.

Ps5: hmm...I think I have to wait for the generation to be over, but for right now I'm gonna give it to either Bugsnax or Helldivers 2. The former was a launch title and a timed console exclusive, and the latter is a console exclusive.

I should have read the OP more carefully; gonna expand my list now to include more titles including multiplatform ones.

Ps1: Tekken 3. One of the greatest games of all time, and definitely what cemented for me for a long until the Ps3 era, one of my favorite video game franchises.

Rugrats Search for Reptar & Studio tour. The former was one of my first video games I ever had, but the latter is one that I had a lot more fun playing because of its variety. I even got to play it on Ps3 thanks to backwards compatibility.

Spyro the dragon. The only one in the OG trilogy I got to play, and nothing in 30 years beats the charm and soundtrack of this game, not even the color saturated remake.

Crash Team Racing. Of all the kart racing games out there competing with Mario Kart, this is the only one that held up for me.

Ps2: Need for Speed Underground 2. I understand that this game was criticized for a lack of cops, but this was my first NFS game and I loved practically everything about it. Since it was my first entry, no game in the series was as enjoyable most likely because of the police aspect that they added back in.

Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup. The Quidditch aspect of the Harry Potter movies were always the most action packed to me, so having a video game dedicated to the magic sport appealed to me a lot. I know there's a sequel out there now but I haven't touched it, and probably never will.

Ps3: Uncharted 2. Man, does this game make me feel nostalgic. It is also one of the greatest games of all time and one of the most important ever in Sony's history. IGN wrote a couple of pieces on it which I highly recommend for anyone else who's a big fan of it.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. This and Black Ops 1 are probably where CoD peaked for me on Ps3, and they're the two I enjoyed playing the most. The former is what catapulted CoD to my most played video game series for a long time because of the multiplayer, but I'm probably never playing it again.

Red Dead Redemption. Both GTA5 & even 4 are probably more popular Rockstar games from Ps3's era, but RDR was so fun and different from games I played in the past in the open world genre, which they were already masters of. I still have yet to play Redemption 2, and I hope one day Revolver gets revisited.

Mass Effect 2. My favorite video game of all time. Enough said.

Yakuza 3: my first entry in the Like a Dragon series. It's hard for me to tell how the general fan base perceives it, seems less favorable to the rest the more that I try to look into it, but I still really loved it. I replayed the remastered Ps4 version on Ps5 and I noticed that the subtitles were different. Kazuma Kiryu is now most favorite fictional character ever, and not just in video games.

Ps4: Rocket League! I actually did play the original, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars and it was quite fun and it's great to see Rocket League being as widespread as it is now. This was not only a timed console exclusive, but might go down as the best Psplus launch game of all time.

Yakuza 0, or Yakuza 6. It's hard for me to decide between the two despite 6 having such better graphics, but 0 might have had the best story, which is where the series excels in the first place.

Ps5: Modern Warfare 2 was the last CoD I played heavily until Micros
oft made the announcement of acquiring Activision.

I just booted up my PS5 after a few days and really got the feels with the classic Playstation startup. So many classics over the years but if I had to pick some favorites, mostly exclusive but a few multi-platform:

PS1
Crash Bandicoot
Spider-Man - it made its way to N64 and I think Dreamcast but this was the reason I wanted a PS1 back in the day
PaRappa the Rapper
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - No, seriously. A great game it is not but I had endless fun with it as a kid

PS2
Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, San Andreas - Even though they all made their way to Xbox, they were still PS2 exclusives for a while and the games I played the most on that console. I always think of them as PS2 games more so than the later ones that released on Xbox at the same time
God of War 1 & 2
Shadow of the Colossus
Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2

PS3 - The only PlayStation console I never owned so I'm counting the following ports I played on PS4:
The Last of Us
Uncharted 1-3
God of War III

PS4
Spider-Man
Uncharted 4
God of War
The Last of Us Part II
Ghost of Tsushima
Horizon: Zero Dawn

PS5
God of War: Ragnarok
Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Spider-Man 2
Horizon: Forbidden West

There are still some earlier ones that I need to play like Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider and a few of the Final Fantasy games.

PS1 - Crash Bandicoot (2, Warped & Team Racing), Twisted Metal (1-4, I'm still holding onto hope that a new game in this series will materialize)
PS2 - Devil May Cry (1+3), Kingdom Hearts (1+2), Ratchet and Clank (trilogy + Deadlocked), Final Fantasy X (my first full FF game ever)
PS3 - Call of Duty (pretty much the era of Call of Duty for me)
PS4 - No one particular game (it was the era of multiplatform gaming for me with none of the games I played on the PS4 being exclusive to it)
PS5 - Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, Final Fantasy 16

Have not touched PSP or PSP Vita

My bro had a PSP. It might of been the worst handheld I ever tried. Not terrible, but I think making console games for it, that weren't as good as the actual console games, just made it a waste of time.

That reminds me of that interview (can't remember the origin) where the game developer echoed similar sentiments and opted to make games for the DS instead of the PSP because the DS at least has its own unique controls with the touchscreen/stylus and can have gaming experiences unique to it, rather than dumbed down console-level gaming experiences. I was happy when Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep got ported over to consoles/PC since I missed out on it the first time around, and I can't imagine playing a handheld version of it on the PSP.

I totally forgot to include it in my last post.

I had a PSP for a couple of years. I got it shortly after launch in 2005 and really dug it at the time because we were still in a pre-smart phone era and the idea of playing a Grand Theft Auto or Battlefront game or watching Spider-Man 2 or Napoleon Dynamite on a handheld console in addition to it having a better internet browser than most if not all phones back then was appealing to me. The honeymoon period lasted maybe a year or so, if that. I remember using it more to watch movies on car trips before I got a video iPod. I think the last game I got for it was a PaRappa the Rapper port which according to Google came out in 2007 and after that it collected dust for about three years until I sold it to Gamestop with all of the games because I needed money. I don't miss it at all but I did really enjoy the Grand Theft Auto games that were released on it. They felt similar as far as gameplay went but the voice acting was where the quality took a dip, except they randomly got Phil Collins on board for Vice City Stories...as himself! But they ended up getting ported to PS2 anyway so in the end you didn't even need to get a PSP if you really wanted to play them.

But yeah, I appreciated the PSP at the time but it's certainly not missed in this era of smartphones and the Nintendo Switch, to name a few.

I loved my PSP, it was so ahead of its time and predated the smartphone. I didn't get an ipod but I used my PSP as one and where I can listen to my music and more importantly watch movies and shows.

Some games on there were really good like GTA & Wipeout but its strengths were in the platform/sidescrolling games like Big Little Planet and especially LocoRoco.

What are the odds that Sony keeps the 30th Anniversary themes around? The "limited time only" is already making me miss my PS2 throwback theme.
my guess is that they'll keep it for the whole month of December, but whenever the next software update comes up, they're gonna remove it.

I had a PsP, too. I forgot to put that on the list. my favorite games there was definitely Tekken Dark Resurrection. not only was that the best fighting game on the system, it was just one of the best games on the system. I also played GTA Liberty City Stories, but never got to beat it.

I also had a Ps Vita, but didn't play it all that much. LittleBigPlanet might have been the game I played on it the most.
