3D is the Future, Huh?

Well...maybe if A: They didnt cost so damn much, and B: They werent converted, and C: over saturated, it wouldnt be dying.

To be honest, I'm feeling right now that out of ten movies, only one will be good in 3D. It's Hollywood's self indulgent and self destructive nature that's destroying 3D right now.

3D obssesion will die. but 3D will not.

theaters spend millions of dollars to update their rooms for 3D. a lot of directos will still make 3d moveis and theaters wll show them.

bad 3D and 3d every month will end. but 3D in general will not IMO.

I hate 3D....so much.

I think it's the fact that most movies that are available in 3-D, don't really need the 3-D. That and 3-D prices are substantially higher than already-high regular screen prices. People don't feel the need to go pay to see something in 3-D unless it's gonna be mind-blowing like Avatar. And to do that, budgets are going to be higher than usual and if this lackluster summer is any indication, they'd do better to concentrate on making better movies first. :funny:

I mean, I know that James Cameron wanted to be the first to spearhead a 3-D revolution, but unfortunately, the short-term outlook is Hollywood treating 3-D as a dependable cash grab for their usual crappy movies.

That and 3-D TVs and glasses for at-home use are prohibitively expensive right now. Again, in this economy, people are thinking that all this is rather ridiculous.

I'm glad the trend is dying already. Still, the 3DS should be an amazing handheld.

it has happened before... it will happen again

The 3D TVs are too expensive... and you have to have all the glassess and 3D Blu-rays...

People are not even fully on board with Blu-ray and Hollywood wants to take it higher

Being an employee at a movie theatre I can honestly tell you that I am tired of the 3D trend. At my job we give out the glasses and at the end of every show, including the last show of the night, we have to pick up the glasses and wash them.

So customers pay a rental fee for the glasses along with the ticket prices and have to return them. Needless to say and rightfully so, they are upset at the fact that they can't keep them. However, I am tired of the 3D craze and feel it's just a gimmick in order to garner more money.

Hell, I love the Saw films. But I won't watch Saw in 3D as I will be content to watching it in the regular format and I have never seen a 3D movie nor do I intend to.

3D is a gimmick...but it will have a bit of staying power due to the theater conversions.

The thing is, because of the fancy screens, if it just ends up as a 2D LieMax on that screen, the tickets will still cost more.

Besides, once people get used to the LieMax, it will pretty much be unacceptable to watch a movie on a conventional sized screen, and most action and Pixar stuff will be given the huge screens while romantic comedies end up on the smaller screens. Eventually all of the screens will be LieMax and tickets will just cost more for every movie, regardless of whether the screen benefits it or not.

Fine by me. Good movies don't need such a ****** gimmick.

I don't know... Personally I'd wait to see what Nintendo can do with 3DS before I start to make comments about 3D is dying. As for movies... a lot of them have been crap that was originally made in 2D and got even worse with 3D. So what did Hollywood expect? That everything 3D would make Avatar-numbers? They really can't be that stupid. Or maybe they can...

They should give you a discount if you bring back your 3d glasses from a previous 3d movie...just try not to get them dirty.

I tried that. The glasses are free. The extra money comes from the cost of the rental for the 3D projector. This has been explained to me be a couple of different theater managers, operating with different chains in different states.

hollywood is running a cheap cash grab fad into the ground?

im shocked.

Their chart is completely ridiculous. Is there a reason they left off Alice in Wonderland which had a 116 M opening weekend?

It's not the shocking of an article. The vast majority of movies that are being released in 3D weren't shot that way so it's not needed. Avatar made huge numbers for 3D screenings because everyone knew it was shot in 3D. The home market will never takeoff, it's too cost prohibitive, most Americans won't pay $3,000-$5,000 for a new TV already for just movies and if regular shows start using 3D technology, who wants to watch TV all night with 3D glasses on? Maybe if 3DS is a success they can use that tech, but that's another new TV which will probably cost even more than the new 3D TVs.

It's not about earnings, it's about how many people saw it in 3D compared to traditional.

this is not true.

this is so not true :huh:

I think the problem is the amount of fake 3D films coming out to cash in on the success of other 3D films. I think since Avatar did so well with its visuals and 3D, most of the GA are looking to watch more and more 3D movies, expecting the experience to resemble what Cameron did flawlessly. Instead, they are treated to barely 3D cardboard crap. These converted films are making them wonder if 3D is really worth it. The fake 3D in these films are being done so poorly that they're turning off the audience from seeing anymore 3D films. Just like how Cameron persuaded them that 3D is good, the converted films are persuading them 3D is bad.

If 3D can be kept to an experience, like Avatar or Tron, then it'll have a place. However, the gimmicky, money-grubbing use of it now is going to really kill it.
