$400 40GB PS3 with Spidey 3 Blu-ray pack-in? Our mole tells all

By Ben Kuchera | Published: September 09, 2007 - 10:16PM CT
Our mole has a great track record: both the Xbox 360 HDMI story and the wired Xbox 360 Rock Band controllers have since been confirmed. Whoever our friendly inside source is, he's got some great contacts. Now he's ready to tell us what Sony's console pricing plans may soon look like. Here's how Sony's platform pricing will shape up by the holiday shopping season:
  • 80GB PlayStation 3: $499.99
  • 40GB PlayStation 3: $399.99
  • Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray movie pack in with one, or both
  • PlayStation 2: $99.99
The 80GB price drop isn't that shocking, but a new $400 40GB system would be huge news. Would people be willing to part with 40GB to save $100? I think so, and having a $400 PlayStation 3 option would be a great weapon this holiday season. If they get to show off the Blu-ray capabilities of the system with Spider-Man 3 bundled? That's a nice package.

The $99.99 PlayStation 2 would ensure that the venerable system will continue to sell well. This is rumor for now, but when Sony makes some announcements at the Tokyo Game Show, I would not be shocked if these were among them. You heard it here first.

WOW, IF THIS TURNS OUT TO BE TRUE, MAN THAT WOULD BE A NICE SETUP FOR THE END OF THE YEAR!!!:up: I REALLY HOPE THEY CAN PULL IT OFF!!!:D:up:

it makes me regret getting a PS3 when I did bc I dfinetly could have waited

For me I definitely regret getting a Wii when it came out, but I haven't regreted getting the PS3, even if I paid 599 for it.

Why, because Motorstorm is SO AWESOME?!?!?! (7.9 from Gamespot)

Well actually because Twilight Princess sucked. As much fun as it is playing Wii Sports with my girl and friends when they come over, I haven't touched it since like late December because there has been nothing to play. I got Sonic 1 and 2 which provided some fun, but I already own those games via compilations, and I picked up the PSP version of Metal Slug Chronicles.

On the other hand, Resistance is awesome, I'm constantly getting demos, PSN games, or trailers to watch on the PS3. We have an HD-TV so, like duh, movies to watch. I can use it to play all my PS2 games and Since I've had a PS3 I've picked up God of War II, Grim Grimoire (Awesome game). Then of course Virtua Fighter 5 is probably the best fighting game I've ever played, and since we're poor we got one of our friends to come over and install Yellow Dog and show us how to use it, so the PS3 is our computer right now, not to mention I have all my music burnt to it, along with a lot of our pictures, and we've got downloaded copies of shows etc on there as well to watch. Our terrible computer still has a ton of stuff on the hard drive that we can stream over.

I doubt that the 40GB model will come to be. Sony has already stated that they only want one SKU because there is really no point in two or more SKUs (60GB sold a lot more than the 20GB and the premium Xbox 360 is vastly outselling both the Elite and Core models).

If anything, I think the 80GB model will drop to $399 after the holidays.

Spider-Man 3? What a terrible movie.

Zenien, wtf? Zelda TP sucked?

It was like they didn't try to make a unique and compelling Zelda game but at the same time forgot about everything that made OoT great whilst throwing in things needlessly only to appease the OoT fanboys. Epona being useless is one example, another is how the world has no real consistency. Gannon is a let down, as is the 40 minute final boss fight.

It would have been 100 times better if the producers hadn't forced Sam Riami to write in Venom. Just Spider-Man Sandman/Goblin would have made for a great movie, but it suffered because of studio interference when it should have been a much smaller story.

First time I saw it I liked it, even though a lot of things bothered me.
The second time I couldn't stand it. The only thing I like now is when Peter's out walking like an idiot, that's pretty funny.
To me, the Spidey saga ends with the super uber genius Spider-Man 2.

This would be great news for everyone if true. My older brother was thinking of getting a PS3, but knowing that a $400 SKU i there would definately sell him on one. I'm guessing this would be a re-tooling of the 20GB PS3 with a beefed up hard drive, which would be perfectly fine for anyone's gaming needs, considering there are issues with WiFi and online gaming anyway. I have a 20GB that I loaded a 120GB HDD into, and i love it, so a 20GB with a packed in 40GB HDD is a great deal.

The first time I saw it I couldn't stand it. Raimi screwed way too many things up, like not doing Venom justice, have Peter be emo(with eyeliner for ****ing out loud) when he has the black suit(he's supposed to be badass with a bad temper you idiot!!!) AND dancing, Goblin2 being mentally challenged half of the movie, Sandman FLYING, Sandman GETTING BIGGER FROM A CONSTRUCTION SITE SO THAT HE LOOKS LIKE CLAYFACE , Sandman BEING UNCLE BENS REAL KILLER, MJ singing, Venom saying "I" when he always said we in the comics and cartoon when he referred to himself, Sandman BEING THE MAIN VILLAIN... I could go on, but I'm a hardcore Spidey fan, and most non-comic geeks thought it was pretty good so whatevs. I might get the $400 PS3, but I plan on selling Spider-Man 3 for like ten bucks if it comes with it, cuz that movie was so disappointing to me. Sounds like a great pricing plan though. Damn you Raimi!!! And Avi, cuz he forced Venom when Sam's original plan was GG and Sandman, which would've probably made it a better movie. Then Venom and The Lizard could've rocked he fourth movie!!!:csad:

Hon Hai Precision to Deliver PS3 Consoles to Sony
2007/09/14

Taipei, Sept. 14, 2007 (CENS)--Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., one of the world`s leading manufacturers on electronic manufacturing service (EMS) basis, recently joined Sony`s supply chain to deliver Play Station 3 (PS3) consoles, according to industry sources.

The sources noted that Sony has set a shipment goal of 10 million PS3 consoles for the first quarter of 2008. This means fierce competition in the global market for game consoles and will lead to a boom in the sector making consumer electronics.

Hon Hai Precision reported sales revenue of NT$100.3 billion in August. This was its first time to break the NT$100 billion mark, and the firm has become Taiwan`s first single enterprise to exceed such a major milestone in single-month revenue. Such an achievement by Hon Hai Precision was due partly to a booming season boosting sales and partly to Sony`s hot-selling Play Station 2 console.

Insiders in the sector said that Sony has cut the selling price of PS3 consoles, and, at the mean time, planned to launch low-price models, with ASUSTeK Computer Inc. and Hon Hai Precision to supply the models.
Since Sony launched PS3 consoles in the fourth quarter of last year, ASUSTeK has been Sony`s sole supplier of the products. However, ASUSTeK hasn`t profited from that as the selling price of the product is too high. As a result, somehow, the company saw its sale revenue sharply slip to NT$136.7 billion for the second quarter from NT$222.5 billion posted in the first quarter.

Institutional investors opined that Sony has been aggressively deploying further operations in the global market for game consoles, and therefore added Hon Hai Precision on its supplier list, attempting to compete against Nintendo and Microsoft, which have competing models of Wii and Xbox, respectively. Thus, it is inevitable to see ruthless underselling competition in the market.

On the other hand, ASUSTeK posted sales revenue of NT$51 billion in August, up 10% from NT$45.9 billion posted in July. But, aided by Sony`s ongoing orders for game consoles, ASUSTeK is expected to post a 30% growth in sales revenue for September.

Noteworthy is that although losing its leading position to Nintendo in the competition between its PS3 and Nintendo`s Wii, Sony still sees its PS2 consoles, which have been launched for seven years, remain hot-selling in the world. This will continue to drive up revenues for Hon Hai Precision and ASUSTeK for the second half of this year.

Accordingly, sales of PS2 consoles has amounted to 100 million units worldwide since the products` launch in 2000, with the shelf life of such products expected to last at least three to four years.

Pachter: 40GB PS3 could Combat Halo 3

Halo 3 sales will top 3 million in 12 days, driving Xbox 360 sales, says Michael Pachter, who believes a PS2 price cut and new 40GB PS3 could be announced by Sony at TGS to combat the Halo 3 juggernaut.
In his latest research note to investors, Wedbush Morgan's Pachter says, “The top September release is expected to be Microsoft’s Halo 3 (360), which we expect to sell over 3 million U.S. units in its first 12 days.

“We expect the game to be a driver of console sales, and believe that Microsoft’s unit sales for the 360 could exceed 400,000 in September, the highest figure for a non-holiday month since launch.”

While Pachter said that “industry software sales growth comparisons will remain difficult in September”, he expects a modest rise in hardware sales due to price cuts made to Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 in July and August respectively.

He also notes that should whisperings about a PlayStation 2 price cut to $99 and the release of a new $399 40GB PS3 turn out to be more than just rumors, the Tokyo Game Show would be an ideal venue for Sony to make such announcements.

“We think that both of these ideas have merit, and note that Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai is the keynote speaker at next week’s Tokyo Game Show. If the rumors are true, we cannot think of a better forum for making such an announcement, given that the event is less than a week before the launch of archrival Microsoft’s Halo 3.

"Should Sony choose to cut prices next week, we think that hardware sales will trend much higher for the balance of the year, and we are prepared to revise our 18% sales growth estimate upward.”

Pachter also reaffirmed his past forecast that the 80GB PS3 (without a game) is in line for a price cut to $499 prior to Thanksgiving.

Nice Kalel.

And for the win....

You may recall my one claim to internet fame was digging up the details on the 80GB PS3 (sad little life).

Well...once again the FCC has a Playstation 3 in its testing phase with a new model number: CECHG01

Nothing to indicate what the difference is but this does lend more fuel to the 'new sku' debate.
