Was just curious what everybody thinks about 60 fps? Does it help? Do you prefer the look to the classic 30?

Personally I'm not a fan, it looks very weird, like everything's slightly fast forwarded. I understand that technically it's closer to what we actually see, but it looks super weird to me both in video games and on film. Hopefully they'll allow people the choice as 60 fps becomes more common, because it honestly ruins the experience for me a bit, like super motion on TVs or 120 Hz.

It's not necessary for all games, but for many it's vitally important. It creates a smoother-feeling gameplay experience and makes games look dramatically better to boot.

I'm not as technical as many on here, but to me the issue with 30 FPS seems to be that when there is a slow down, it's really noticeable. Like in Witcher 3.

I honestly don't care about 30 fps or 60 fps, I have a dated computer that I play games on, people that say 30 fps is bad don't have the slightest concept of what a bad framerate is, just like the average gamer has no concept of what "unplayable" means. The only thing that has the slightest bit of importance to me in regards to framerate is that whatever the framerate is, it is stable.

That's not an issue of 30 fps, it's an issue of them not being able to code it in a way that the system can handle. Whether it's 30 or 60, any slowdown will be noticeable and ruin the experience.

I guess that begs the question, if you're playing 60 and there's slowdown to 30 fps, do you notice?

I don't know about games, but in film I've found it a little odd at first and then I quickly get used to it. I imagine it will be the same with video games.

I find the premise of this thread kind of strange. The OP almost asserts that 60fps is some kind of newfangled thing, when in reality the majority of games prior to the last generation ran at 60.

On what systems? I don't remember any games running at over 30 until it became a thing on PC and only really started becoming a thing towards sometime during the last generation, but is only really becoming the standard on this new generation. The hardware couldn't really handle it consistently for most games until the power of next gen.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

For action games, racers and shooters that require quick reactions and reflexes, 60 fps has a significant impact on your overall experience. Everything just feels quicker, smoother and ultimately more responsive. You don't get that feeling of heaviness and input lag with 60 fps the way you do with 30 fps. It's like going from a sluggish Toyota Corolla to a razor-sharp Ferrari 458. Of course, at the same time, what's also equally important in this discussion but is still often overlooked is the consistency of the frame rate. A constant and stable 30 fps is better than an inconsistent and jumpy 60 fps.

Personally, I would sacrifice 10-15 % of resolution for a locked-in 60 fps any day of the week. The most recent example is that of The Witcher 3 I played on the PS4. I then went back to my PC and ran the whole thing on slightly higher settings but the higher framerate and "snappiness" that comes with a consistent 60 fps just made the game feel substantially more enjoyable.

I've been meaning to look this up because in all honesty, I don't really know what's the difference.

Most games prior to the last gen ran at 60. The fifth generation (64, PS1, Saturn) was a little iffy and inconsistent because 3D graphics were so new. But by and large 60fps was the standard until the 360 came out.

It's only become a topic of discussion in recent years because of how crappy the last generation was in this regard.

The idea that 60fps wasn't possible until these new consoles is ludicrous. It has nothing to do with the power of the hardware. The NES ran games at 60fps for ****s sake. It has to with whether or not developers prioritize it when they're making their game.

Due to a complete lack of technical understanding, I did not know this. But now that I do, it kind of makes this thread pointless.

Same with me. Never bothered me since I could never tell the difference.

I looked up some videos that are supposed to show the difference and I honestly can't tell what to look for. Is the picture supposed to be clearer? Is the speed supposed to change? Like I honestly can't tell.

60 fps is fine in most gaming situations

The one time I can say it really bothered me though, was in MGS ground zeroes
The shaky-cam of the intro, plus 60fps, sucked hard and made me seasick

And in films? Forget it, 60fps should be forbidden on movies, everything looks so s***ty and artificial
So basically, the more "cinematic" you want the experience to be, the less inclined you should be towards making it 60fps
but if you want to go for more immersion and realism, 60 wins out

Doesn't really matter to me. So long as whatever framerate you use, it is stable and the game runs well. If you have to sacrifice something integral for the higher frame rate, then its a mistake.

30 fps is great and when a game is like that I don't complain but 60 fps is a lot better. Just play The Last of Us Remastered on PS4. It runs so smoothly.

yeah the main thing for me was the shaky cam
if you're gunna go with that style of framing, then don't use 60fps

For example Metal Gear Solid 2 that was released in 2001 on PS2 was 60fps.

The reason why you can't "see" the difference between 30fps and 60fps in a YouTube video is because most of the videos on YouTube are compressed down to 24fps, so either way both variants will look the same. Of course, there are some videos on YouTube that do have have a 1080p60fps option in the settings where you can tell a difference. Finally, 60fps is as much about the feel of the game as it is about the visuals. Everything is simply that much more snappier and responsive with 60fps, with virtually no input lag. It's something that is difficult to convey with a video. Grab a controller/keyboard+mouse however and you will immediately notice it.

The same reason it looked weird when PJ did it with the Hobbit flicks. Your eyes are too used to seeing that **** in a fantasy setting and when stuff that isn't real moves like it does in real life....it looks off.

The video is supposed to look smoother. There is more frames in one second.

Here is one video that shows it:

It's 30fps when you watch it in 480p and HD resolutions are in 60fps. Use Firefox or Google Crome.

I like 60 FPS. Always a plus. But I'm not obsessed with it. If the game has to sacrifice graphics quality to achieve 60 FPS - it's not good.

I feel just the opposite. Besides, 60fps improves the visuals in its own way by presenting a much smoother image.
