61 Nights of Halloween (2024 Edition)

Also, should I save Oddity for October? I've been really tempted to watch it this week.
Mike Flanagan says it's the best movie he's seen all year. Do what you will with that info.

Well I only have 31 slots and I want to maximize stuff I haven't seen over stuff I have seen. And I don't wanna double up on days because I don't have the time.

In terms of new releases I'm looking forward to watching In A Violent Nature, Smile 2, Exhuma, Humane, Strangers, Oddity, Azrael and a few more that I can't remember at the moment.

Then there's the wildcards with Flick's Hype Club picks.

The big one that I'm finally checking out this year is

So excited to finally see it.

That's me and Strange Darling, tempted to check it out in theaters.

I should've saved Oddity for October but I was in the mood for a horror the other night.
I don't think it is as great as some might be saying... BUT it does have some of the creepiest imagery I've seen on film so far this year. There's one particular jump scare that reaaaaally worked for me. So yeah, I recommend it. Turn off all the lights though.

My third time rewatching this and it's definitely a film that's gotten better for me over time. Edwards does such a fantastic job with the direction in this, and the sound design is pretty amazing as well. You can definitely see why they chose this guy to direct Godzilla 3 years later and I honestly can't wait to see what he brings to the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise, but I do still think his writing when it comes to the human characters could be a lot stronger. Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able give some really solid performances in this, but I'd be lying if I said that I cared about any of the melodrama/romance between their characters.

This is such a bizarre film and to this day I still don't understand why they tried to tie it to the first. This movie barely has anything to do with the creatures themselves and worst of all its just boring. Instead of getting more of a focus on stuff we actually want to see we instead get some half assed, artsy, self-indulgent, tedious, war flick that for some reason this director thought was going to be the next Hurt Locker or Zero Dark Thirty. I mean I don't want to sound super harsh but comparing this to those films is honestly more of an insult than anything else and its a shame because its not badly made and has some good actors in it.

I haven't seen this since it first came out and completely forgot Sofia Boutella was in it for like 10 minutes but for some reason has no dialogue which was a very odd choice IMO.

Completely missed this one somehow but its definitely a found-footage film worth checking out IMO. Be warned though that the subject matter is pretty disturbing, and the second half is pretty dark and goes to some messed up places but damn the lead guy's performance/transformation throughout this film is pretty incredible to watch and it honestly felt like they got someone who was truly a disturbed individual.

A slow burn but I enjoyed the offbeat quirkiness of it and its definitely more of a dark comedy than a horror film although the third act gives you some pretty solid horror if your willing to stick with it. If anything its actually kind of unique when it comes to the BIG reveal, but I respect the ambition behind it. Not to give too much away but I also thought the special effects looked fantastic for such a low budget film too.

Happy First Day of Halloween everyone!

For the first month I’ll be doing a free-all any genre allowed marathon, and for next month, in honor of Nosferatu, I’ll be making October Vampire Month!

On the docket tonight: Alien
Nice.

Have you seen Romulus yet, OKA?

When you accidentally forget that it's officially the start of spooky season because you're in a holiday weekend daze but by a happy coincidence you happen to watch one of the pioneers of the horror genre for the first time today

The movie in question? I just watched the OG Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I'm really not sure how or why it's eluded me all these years. I saw the meh remake with Jessica Biel about twenty years ago and the even crappier prequel that followed but strangely I never saw the original until now.

Now I've heard all about people fainting and vomiting while watching The Exorcist when it first came out and I have to admit that I think those reactions are a little much for that movie. That one was still scary but I could totally understand that reaction for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre because this felt way more intense for the time and I can only imagine how much of a whiplash this gave audiences back then.

This was a pioneer of the slasher genre and I tip my hat to it. My only regret is that I didn't watch it 20+ years ago because it would have messed me up as a teenager.
