One of the greatest anime films I've ever seen, Satoshi Kon doesn't disappoint. It was really suspenseful, too. I did have a couple of issues.

The intersection of dumb and fun is my happy place, and this fits the bill. Predator 2 is less refined, less scary, and less inventive than its predecessor, but it fills the gaps with outrageous side characters, good kills, and an increasingly unhinged performance from Danny Glover.
Generic, unremarkable, and crass, Predators has very little to offer. Where's the beefcake? The first two Predator movies shine for their great action sequences, assortment of complimentary tones, and charismatic lead actors. This one is just... dreary. I thought the first third of Predators was oddly humorless, but ultimately I wish they would've cut comedy entirely from the picture, as the movie's only attempts at levity turned out to be slurs and a rape joke so jarring that it took me a good 30 minutes to get back into the film. What a weird installment; no wonder this has been largely forgotten.
I've really enjoyed the marathon so far, it's been fun watching all these new films, revisiting old favorites, and exploring unfamiliar franchises, but the one thing I've been missing is a genuinely scary movie. Well, I asked, and I have received. Oddity kept me on the edge of my seat, especially for its first two thirds. It's creepily atmospheric, has several first-class scares, and a few unsettling concepts to gnaw at the audience for days and weeks to follow. A perfect mixture for an effective, memorable horror film. One scene that has stayed with me is an early dilemma that a central character has to face. Really interesting, uncomfortable stuff. Great movie!
2024 is a favorable year for horror prequels that nobody asked for. Apartment 7A isn't as good as The First Omen, but it's entirely watchable and a fine addition to Rosemary's Baby. The aforementioned original is one of my favorite horror stories, whether as a book or as a movie, so I pressed play with a certain amount of skepticism, but I was won over by the nice visuals, good audio design and soundtrack (except for the dollar store autotune), and a surprisingly wonderful cast of actors. Julia Garner is a superstar. A blinged-out demon helps too, I'm a sucker for designs like that.
A truly special film, one of the best of 2024. Many of the themes in this film are deeply important and personal to me, and I was moved by several moments in this, particularly the scene of Demi Moore's character preparing for a date. Speaking of Moore, her work in this is easily some of the most glorious in her long career. Margaret Qualley is equally impressive. This is acting with maximum bravery, Isabelle Huppert would be impressed. The directing is energetic, wild, and confident. Coralie Fargeat is one of the most interesting directors working right now, this feels like seasoned, hyperfocused work, and it's only her second feature! The Substance is a cool, vicious film with visuals (and sounds) so gross and memorable that they'll instantly go down in horror history. Masterful makeup effects, prosthetics, and VFX. I can't believe I got to see this at the largest auditorium in my city, a Dolby with over 400 seats. Maybe 30 of them were filled, but the shocked and delighted atmosphere was palpable. This was one for the ages, I couldn't help but giggle during the end credits. Freaking loved it, five stars.
