61 Nights of Halloween (2024 Edition)

The Thing is always the best for reactions just for dog part.

Every year gives us new people scarred by it.

My girl and I were really looking forward to this one and it didn’t disappoint. I think my favorite segment was Live And Let Dive. I also thought all the segments were going to be Alien/UFO based but I guess not.

How would you rank it with the rest of the franchise? I really loved the vs. film and will probably rank it super high, which probably is also a minority opinion :funny:

Well as far as the Nightmare franchise goes I’m bad with rankings and putting things in like number positions. But I can tell you my favorites in the franchise (in no particular order) are the OG, Dream Warriors, Dream Master, New Nightmare. I enjoy all of the others and the remake so I guess the remake would fall into I enjoy it but it’s not one of my personal favorites.

For me:

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street
2. Dream Warriors
3. New Nightmare

That's the "Nightmare trilogy". Seen the others, enjoy them to varying degrees, but none really touch those imo.

I'm thinking something like this:

Dream Warriors
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Freddy's Revenge
Freddy vs. Jason
New Nightmare
The Dream Master
The Dream Child
Freddy's Dead
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

I'll write more about the remake later, but to me it was jarringly self-serious for what it has to offer. So edgy. The updated origin story didn't sit well with me either. There's allusions in the earlier installments, but some things are better left unsaid, especially in a franchise that's mostly goofy fun.
I would have preferred the idea that he was driven to kill by the pedophile accusations.

There is a new horror series called teacup that has a strong The Thing vibe.

I watched spin the bottle. Not sure how they got Justin Long and Ali Larter in this terrible movie. Going from Barbarian and Final Destination to this is a huge step down.

I just watched It's What's Inside for tomorrow (I'm pretty busy for the next two days so I'm doing my marathon early) and I'm so mad I picked Hold Your Breath for day 5 instead of this when I was picking what to watch. This is a sneak preview but it's probably in my top 25 for the year. Best to go in completely blind.

I know for a fact that this is a film that will go under a lot of people's radar by the end of the year but if you like lower budget slasher/horror flicks I would definitely recommend it. The acting isn't great but its probably better than you would expect it to be and considering Brande Roderick directed this and stars in it makes it even more impressive IMO because I actually think she did a pretty solid job here. I actually thought the family drama aspect was more compelling but the horror stuff in this delivers the goods as well.

This was definitely worth watching for Samara Weaving alone but I do wish I got a bit more out of it. It moved at a good pace and the gore was pretty satisfying, but I would have liked a bit more worldbuilding. I also wasn't too crazy about the creature designs in this, but it is what it is I guess.

This reminded a lot of The Babadook which I'm actually not a big fan of, but I liked this enough overall. The dysfunctional stepmother/stepson relationship was tense at times, and I think the actress playing the stepmother did a great job, but it took a bit too long to get going IMO. Thankfully, the creature/entity in this is pretty fricking terrifying and memorable and had me engaged whenever it was onscreen.

This was better than a good majority of the Huluween movies we get every year which unfortunately isn't saying much but I really dug the premise of this for the most part. It's basically an evil version of Mr. Rodgers combined with some elements of Candyman complete with an early 90's setting. The third act turns into pure B-movie schlock though which took me out of the movie at times but man I wasn't expecting this to be as gory as it was and the practical puppet/creature effects are pretty damn impressive.

Bite-Sized Review: There are structural issues at the heart of the narrative that cause it to stumble on the way home. But at the heart, the relationship between the two leads makes my heart soar like few things can.
