61 Nights of Halloween (2024 Edition)

Earlier this evening we watched -

THE BIRDS (1963) Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Starring Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette, and Veronica Cartwright.
The bird has a knife. It wasn't raised right.

One of my all time favorites. Really all the Classic Universal Monster films are, but this one is towards the top only really following Frankenstein. I had no idea Whannell's reboot was coming out so soon. Only just saw the poster the other day while at the theater.

My hot take is still Werewolf of London was a slightly better movie. But watching Lon Chaney show up later in these movies did a better job of making me like him even more.

Geninuely curious. What is the appeal of the Terrifier movies? I haven't been able to muster up the will to watch. Are they worth the time?

I am in the same boat as you when it comes to this franchise. Nothing about it appeals to be. I’ve really had no desire to watch them. I also feel like they’re trying wayyyyyyy too hard to cement Art as a horror icon.

And some fans make it out like each of these movies is the second coming. I haven’t seen them but from what I gather I get the sense that they’re just going for shock value and being over the top for the sake of it.

It’s What’s Inside

I'm 99.9% sure the actor James Morosini must have body-swapped Jake Gyllenhaal in real life at some point because it's so dead on, it's scary.

Same. For me they're in the same boat as those stupid Winnie the Pooh horror movies.

I might be disillusioned with Art, but I haven't had a taste of Pooh yet. I'm a sucker for stupid ****, so that's a double feature with my name on it for the near future.

Decided to do the Terrifier series, so I went back to where it all started...

All Hallows' Eve (2013) dir. Damien Leone

Painfully boring, no budget, bad acting... but it picked up in the final 20 minutes? That bodes well for the Terrifer movies, right? Right?????

I wasn't a fan of All Hallow's Eve either. Just keep in mind the filmmaking gets better with each film even with the no budget, it's all intentionally meant to be a cheap grindhouse where it's just about the kills... until T2.

Bite-Sized Review: Maybe it makes me a child, but I couldn't get past the goofy bug stuff. Not to mention the creepy director self-insert.

Bite-Sized Review: Now this is more like it. Not as slick as Deep Red, but a far better written mystery.

Tonight we watched -

UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS (2009) starring Rhona Mitra, Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy, and Kevin Grevioux.
UNDERWORLD (2003) Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, Michael Sheen, and Kevin Grevioux.

Two from the series of movies about a war between vampires and werewolves. We watched them in the order listed above. The first listed (LYCANS) was the third made in the series but took place 6 to 7 hundred years before the first of the series (UNDERWORLD) and it explains how the war started. Trivia - actor Kevin Grevioux is also the creator/writer of the stories.

Another Flanagan show. I cannot believe that Greenwood was a replacement mid-production, because I can't imagine it without his commanding presence.

Yeah, this was absolutely fantastic and pretty much lived up to the hype IMO. As a long time Demi Moore fan I honestly couldn't be happier for her right now because I thought she was straight up amazing in this. I've seen her play so many different roles over the years but nothing quite like this and while its unlikely I do believe she at least deserves somekind of awards recognition for her performance in this.

The make-up/gore effects in this are pretty fantastic too but I have to say gore wise nothing in this grossed me out or disturbed as much as I thought it would but maybe that's because I've just seen Terrifier 3. Even when it got to that bat**** third act I still found myself more impressed by the effects than anything else which is fine because the last thing I wanted to see was more gratuitous, over the top violence.

I think I was more disgusted by Dennis Quaid eating that nasty ass looking shrimp than the actual body horror stuff in the movie but that's not to say that the body horror isn't effective because it is.

Quaid was great in this playing a pure scumbag btw and while I'm not all that familiar with Margaret Qualley I thought she was pretty great in this too and I look forward to seeing her in more stuff.

I also didn't know this was from the same director who made Revenge, which is such an awesome little French Horror film, but man do I hope she makes more unique genre stuff like this.

8/10
