Wow, we saw a lot of the same movies.

Started things off with a Tubi trawl last night, with surprising results.

1. Lowlifes (2024)
Tubi Original

Been interested in seeing this after seeing Amanda Fix in Orphan Black Echoes. Not as painfully torture porn as a lot of the cannibal family genre that made it quite enjoyable to me. A slight element to slapstick in a lot of the kills keeps it entertaining to me. And thank god they revealed the twist on the genre in the first 15 minutes. The cast feels strangely familiar, as checking the IMDB does say they are a bunch of Vancouver regulars, even if they feel like it. I don't think a Tubi Trawl will have as good results, as I really, really enjoyed this movie. We will see what else pops up.

2. Killer Body Count (2024)
Tubi Original

Its a competent low budget slasher. The effects are worse than in Lowlifes, and in this type of movie, 2 hours is really stretching things. I respect the movie for focusing on the girl's horniness and the sad reality, boys at that age are unlikely to satisfy them. It would be fairly okay if not for a fairly disappointed reveal, though I did laugh at the very end. But **** you for this line movie. "Back in 2004, before any of use were born"

3. Festival of the Living Dead (2024)
Tubi Original

Wrapping up my first Tubi Trawl with another original. Not a huge fan of zombies any more (thank you Walking Dead for burning that out of me), but I checked this out largely because this was a chance to see Camren Bicondova, I loved her in Gotham. I liked it more than I expected, mainly for Bicondova and Ashley Moore, and the guys made hateful *******s. A lot of the set up didn't make sense to me, so I just stopped trying to make it work in my head. I wish, since it was referring to Night as happening in this movie's past, they would have kept the make up more in line with the original. But, guess you gotta let make up artists stretch their muscles. Though, plus for having a band named Goddesszilla.

Well, this pretty much lived up to its own hype and then some lol. The first half of this was actually pretty solid too and it worked as a dysfunctional family drama which is what Lee Daniels excels at but then the supernatural stuff is introduced, and the movie completely shifts focus and turns into a complete campfest. Calling it bad is honestly putting it nicely because so much of it is straight up laughable.

The acting throughout is kind of great though even if the dialogue sucks and I definitely think its worth watching for Glenn Close's performance alone which is truly something special in itself. Mo'Nique was pretty entertaining to watch in this too and has some of the best lines in the movie IMO.

Omar Epps and Caleb McLaughlin felt wasted in this though.

I was kind of expecting the worst from this after The Deliverance and while it has its problems this came pretty close to being a decent enough Aussie horror flick. It's pure B-movie schlock but unlike something like Hell Hole I can tell the directors actually tried to put some effort into this one despite the low budget. The performances are whatever but when it comes to the body horror/creature effects I was impressed.

I would definitely recommend this one if you're a fan of movies from the 80's like The Fly or a lot of the stuff Cronenberg was putting out back then but on a much lower budget.

It took me sometime to even finish this one but overall its alright. If you're a fan of Thai/Asian horror you might be interested in checking it out but its nothing special at all. There some decent gore sprinkled throughout the stories and the practical make-up isn't too bad either, but the use of CGI was a bit much at times. If Halloween wasn't around the corner, I probably wouldn't have finished it.
