Bite-Sized Review: I saw the American remake as a child. I now understand why it went over so poorly. Especially the ending.

I remember this one. I read the remake and yeah the changes sound horrible. What a waste of Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges, and Keifer Sutherland.

More then the actual film, I remember the trailers and being super freaked out about them. I also somehow knew the original ending and being confused by which was which a few years down the line. :funny:

The First Omen was operating on Excorist III/Rosemary's Baby levels of "elevated horror," meanwhile Immaculate was more or less in line with The Devil’s Rain or Prey for the Devil.

I dug both but First Omen was fantastic.

And all those are levels above The Devil Conspiracy.

''

Though I doubt as hilariously entertaining.

House was my first film of 2025. LOVED it. There's so much going on at every moment, but somehow it was never too much.
For a minute I almost got it confused with Sweet Home. Another Japanese horror film that would later get a video game adaptation, and a remake attempt that would later become Resident Evil.

9th of September:
Rebecca (1940)

Another Alfred Hitchcock (a big one!) off the list. This one I had been looking forward to for quite some time. Rebecca was Hitchcock's first Hollywood film and a game-changer to his career in many ways. He was able to work with a much larger budget, bigger stars, and recent advancements in filmmaking technology, but he also faced more rampant censorship of his work through the Hays Code, which, as much as I liked Rebecca, was the reason for most of my issues with it.

Eighty-five years on, our standards and understanding of what kinds of relationships are appropriate to romanticize have changed dramatically. That's part of the issue, but the main problem here is the portrayal of Daphne du Maurier's dark, gothic story as a more straightforward romance, and that came largely down to the Hays Code and what the filmmakers were forced to change.

Still, overlooking that aspect, Rebecca is an atmospheric, beautifully paced gothic drama with compelling characters. This is very much a ghost story, even if it doesn't include any supernatural elements, and Hitchcock directs it like one, the way only he could.
