This is still looked at as one of GDT's lesser works, but I have a feeling this will be reappraised soon. Bradley Cooper is great here, and that ending is just... perfect.

Another surprisingly decent Tubi film. I don't know if I'm just getting lucky or something but I feel like Tubi is kind of on a roll with these original films so far between this and Takeout and I also find it interesting that both films were made in South Africa.

Maybe it's just a weird coincidence but I definitely recommend going into this one as blind as possible. Once the reveal happens it gets pretty dark, gross and gory and honestly I don't think most people will look at online dating the same way ever again lol.

Bite-Sized Review: SA good start that showed the potential of the series. But clearly nowhere near the heights of what was to come. Favorite segment, 10/31/98. Worst segment, Second Honeymoon.

Bite-Sized Review: More confidence here but I'm not sure if I like the story ideas as much. Still, it does the job. Favorite segment, Safe Haven. Worst segment, Slumber Party Alien Abduction.

Bite-Sized Review: Awful. Everything that gave the series it's charm up to this point is missing. No wonder the series went dormant for so long. Least terrible segment, Bonestorm. Worst, Vicious Circles.

Improvement over Beyond but it's still a mid-tier VHS film. Mainly carried by the second half starting off with Fun Size. Didn't care much for the first two shorts, especially the AI aided one.

Bone Lake

The campier cousin to Speak No Evil with some scene stealing villains. Not quite as steamy as the title would lead you to believe. The lead actress looked distractingly similar to Florence Pugh at times haha.

Had to look up which of the Bargain Florence Pughs was in Bone Lake and had not realized Maddie Hasson was in it! Been a fan since 'We Summon the Darkness,' definitely will need to check it out now.

We Summon the Darkness and Malignant. We see her a lot every year. Planning on making the trip to the theater to see her in Bone Lake.

Bite-Sized Review: The grunge entry of the series, and my initiation into the franchise, it was love at first sight, with a number of bangers and a killer aesthetic. It also has my favorite framing story. Favorite segment, The Empty Wake. Least, Terror.

Bite-Sized Review: The 90s was the decade of VHS as another fun collection proves. I would be lying if I didn't say I missed the framing device, but they make up for it with a killer ending. Favorite segment, To Hell and Back. Least, Ozzy's Dungeon.

Bite-Sized Review: The weakest of the Shudder flicks so far, it lacks cohesion and overall quality. A lot more style over substance here. That said, I really enjoy the inter-film sequel. Favorite segment, No Wake. Worst segment, Total Copy.

Bite-Sized Review: Easily the "scariest" and most cohesive of the collections. The segments run the gamut of the genre resulting in very fun, very fresh and at times truly horrifying experience. This one has aged very well. Favorite segment, Stowaway. Least, Fur Babies.

****1/4

Bite-Sized Review: Another strong effort, with a more comedic slate. The biggest issue is that three of the strongest segments are built around the same trapped in building with a monster premise. Well that and Kidprint being weighed down by his OTT darkness that renders it ineffective well before it's end. Favorite segment, Home Haunt. Worst, Kidprint.

Not going to lie I was pretty disappointed with this eventhough my expectations for it weren't super high to begin with. It's from the same director that just did Primitive War which I loved despite its cheesiness and while I do think he's a pretty competent B-movie director this just didn't really work for me overall.

The acting from the two main leads is fine for the most part but the whole creature feature aspect just wasn't utilized enough IMO and most of it is just two people constantly arguing underground.

Now to be fair it makes sense in context of the movie but there just wasn't enough happening IMO which is a shame because I thought the creatures themselves looked kind of cool especially when you get to see the creature designs up close.

Also, that damn ending went on for far too long but it's not an awful movie.

I remember watching the first movie and enjoying it and had no idea they made a sequel so this was a nice surprise.

If you enjoy Thai or Indonesian horror films I definitely think it's worth checking out. It's not as violent or gory as some of the other films in this genre but a fun ride nonetheless.

Also, the main character Yak is pretty badass and reminds me a lot of a Thai version of Ash from The Evil Dead.

Well, kind of stuck in the apartment during work hours, so I got a few movies in.

8. The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)

If Variety hated GDT for making Dr. Frankenstein the villain, hooboy, would they have problems with Hammer and Peter Cushing's Baron. Lee as the Creature is great in concept, if you love Cushing and Lee in Dracula films, but kind of fails to live up to the hype when Lee is in a non speaking role. Cushing is a wonderful villain in this, that while may take some scenes like Universal did, but very much makes it their own.

9. The Evil of Frankenstein (1964)

Less outright villain in this one, Frankenstein is just more frustrated by ignorant villagers interrupting his work. He even tries to save the town when the true villain, a mentalist, controls the creature for his own gain and vengeance. The creature design was kind of pushing copyright with Universal though, even if was paper mache quality.

10. Frankenstein Created Woman (1967)

Again, not outright villain Frankenstein, even if he is still a bit of a jerk. I find it a fascinating film in that it is a proto slasher. Feels like it cribbed a bit from Psycho in that way. And the killer is a woman, big for the 60s.

11. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969)

Good ol'evil Baron Victor is back. I, along with Cushing, dislike the one random scene they added just to up the villainy. But other the one scene that is entirely forgotten about for the rest of the movie, it is an enjoyable movie. I do enjoy the tension of the Baron blackmailing a couple to help him continue his work, but I would have liked the couple to be a bit more important to the finale. And we get an intelligent creature, finally. So that is fun for the finale.

Also tempted to add the new Digimon show for horror, as it is a big digital privacy dystopia.

October 4th:
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994)
Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025)

MV5-BMGQ2-MWNj-YWMt-Ym-Ux-My00-Mm-Mz-LThh-OTkt-MTc4-Mj-Ri-OTM0-N2-Vm-Xk-Ey-Xk-Fqc-Gc-V1-FMjpg-UX1000-1.jpg

Kenneth Branagh's uneven direction feels both disappointingly tame and wildly operatic, but Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is elevated by the fearlessness of its cast (Robert DeNiro!). It could've used more blood — and tighter, more purposeful editing. The second act drags, particularly when DeNiro isn't onscreen. He brings such heart and even a glimpse of genuine menace, but I wanted more, more, more.

Still, another one off the list in anticipation of Del Toro's take.

fear-street-prom-queen-ver4-xlg.jpg

Ah, Fear Street, summer '21 — what a time to be alive. Shadyside is back, albeit with a lesser, one-shot installment. Prom Queen is a by-the-numbers teen-horror pastiche with appropriately fleshy kills (a franchise mainstay!), but it's all let down by a dreadful third act that drags the whole thing through the mud. The soundtrack is nothing but bangers, yet so predictable it feels directly nicked from a Spotify “This Is ’80s” playlist. I doubt I'll remember much about the film a week from now, but I wouldn't mind revisiting it in future marathons.

Now, Netflix — how about a second Fear Street trilogy?
