An 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Japan early Friday, triggering tsunami warnings and sending people fleeing out of buildings in the capital.
The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath. In Tokyo, crowds huddled together and tried to reach relatives via cell phone.

Its epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said.

It triggered a tsunami warning for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.

"Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerous to coasts outside the source region," it said.

The live tsunami footage is ****ing horrifying. there are cars hauling ass away from it. It looks like it's gonna get them. :(

It is one of the scariest things I've ever seen. This end of the world mumbo jumbo is starting to seem more real by the day.

Are people still going to say those billion of fish dying in the coast of California isn't somehow connected to this?

God have mercy.

Hawaii has just received a Tsunami warning.

More as the story develops. A bunch of other countries under Tsunami warnings as well those include:

Russia, Taiwan, & Australia

When I first saw it I was gonna make a Godzilla joke. They get earthquakes fairly often and aren't usually that bad. I just assumed it was another minor one.

When I saw how bad it was I felt bad. This is pretty crazy. My thoughts are with everyone in that mess.

Christ what is with all the quakes lately? Yesterday there was a deadly one in China. A couple weeks ago there was the devastating Christchurch quake in NZ.

Hoping all Hypers are okay. I work in Korea and head to Japan quite often. Have been to Sendai where it looks like the worst hit.

Best of wishes JJJ.

Yes Sendai did receive the worst of the hit.

I live in California so this defintely hits home. I feel for everyone in Japan going through this and hope for the best.

I hope the Chiba prefecture gets the oil refinery fire under control it is growing by the second and tons of buildings near by.

Aftershocks continue.

6.2 tremor

If they have logic, then yes, they will say that.

Yes, animals can sense things like this, but that's no more than an hour or two in advance, and they try to leave the area when they do.

Animals don't spontaneously die days before an earthquake. That's not how things work.

Alright God.

Another 6.2 aftershock OFF THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN

While I agree, theres been an odd number of mass animal deaths the past few months.

That may or may not be true, but as they're obviously not connected with this event, this is not the place for that discussion. You can easily see what I think about that in my posts in the appropriate thread.

Seismologist on BBC just said the quake that hit Kobe in '95 and killed 6,000 people was a hundred times weaker than the one that hit today.

It's times like these I wish I could swear on the Hype.

SuperFerret it takes two to tango. If this isn't the appropriate place for that discussion then you are at least partly to blame for perpetuating it.

BREAKING NEWS: Nuclear Power Plant in Onagawa is on fire!

A fire broke out at Tohoku Electric Power Co's (9506.T) Onagawa nuclear plant in northeastern Japan following Friday's major earthquake, Kyodo news agency said.

Prior to the Kyodo report, the company had said it had not received information on whether there had been any problems at the nuclear power plant after the disaster.

Separately, Fukushima Prefecture, the site of a Tokyo Electric Power (9501.T) nuclear power plant, said on Friday the plant's reactor cooling system was functioning, denying an earlier report that it was malfunctioning.

Japanese media reported that the government had decided to declare a nuclear power emergency situation, which occurs if there is confirmation of radioactivity leaks from a nuclear power plant or a reactor cooling system breaks down.
