Eight-year-old boy found hanged

An eight-year-old boy has been found hanged in his bedroom in Lancashire.
Joshua Aldred was found unconscious by his grandmother in Lytham on Thursday night. He was taken to hospital in Blackpool but died a short time later. Joshua's mother and grandfather had recently died from cancer and his family believe it was a cry for help.
His father Jason Aldred said: "He missed his mother and spoke of her often. Our very close relationship was of immense support to both of us." He said he believed his son only intended to hurt himself, not take his own life. "A tragic accident at home occurred when Joshua's sadness at the loss he had experienced at such a young age has resulted in this tragedy," he said. "The family are sure he expected to only injure himself slightly and are devastated that this cry for attention resulted in the loss of such a beautiful boy."

- School Statement
A post-mortem examination carried out on Friday showed his death was consistent with hanging. Family liaison officers from Lancashire Police are now working closely with his relatives. Mr Aldred added: "Joshua Isaac Aldred was my beautiful son who was so tragically taken from me. "In his very short life, Joshua had faced the double tragedy of the loss of his mother, Sarah, from breast cancer on 17 March 2008 and his granddad, John, from prostate cancer, on 9 July 2007. "Outwardly this loving and happy child, who had a great network of family and friends to support him, coped admirably."

Pupil support
Joshua was a pupil at the independent King Edward VII and Queen Mary School in Lytham St Annes.
A statement posted on the school website said: "We are shocked and saddened by news of the death of Joshua Aldred. He was a delightful eight-year-old who will be very sadly missed by everyone.
"We are talking to the children and their parents in the preparatory school and are providing support to them.
"Our deepest sympathy goes to Joshua's father and the rest of his family and we of course respect their rights to privacy at this sad time."

This is perhaps the saddest news story I have ever heard.:csad::csad::csad:

Wow. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone that young killing themselves.

I wouldn't say he's a ******, but more naive. Very sad when now even 8 yr olds are going suicidal.

Aw man, what a cute little boy. What shame he had to deal with such tragedy at a young age like that, and felt that he had to hurt himself to deal with it... D: that just makes me depressed.

that's so sad. :( i doubt he realized what he was doing. to call him a '******' is completely out of line. he was just a kid. suicide is stupid, yes, but what does an 8 year old really know about suicide? maybe he saw a scene from a movie or tv show where a person hung theirself but was rescued. maybe the kid wanted to be rescued. who knows..bottom line- it's a sad story to read about

The story is sad. Damn, that's unbelievable that a kid at that age would even consider suicide. It's not only sad that his life was a trainwreck, but it's also sad that he gave up a life that could have had a bright future.

:csad:

Yeeeesh...I think this is the youngest suicide I've ever heard of.

Thats extremely sad,
my only question is, "..his son only intended to hurt himself" How the hell do you only try to hurt yourself with a noose?

I was actually thinking the same thing...maybe he used a chair or a stool?
yea i was thinking stool, but how could someone not notice that. a boy depressed over the loss of his mom and grandpa taking a rope and stool to his room. not a good combination

This is very unfortunete and very sad. I feel bad for that dad. Also to magik, yes this child is naive... HE'S 8 YEARS OLD. Also he missed his mother and his grandfather, ppl tell him they're in heaven... he wants to go to heaven? Makes sense when ur 8

8 years old, that's unbelievable. Incredibly sad :csad:

Oh my goodness, that is like the Sadest thing i've ever heard:(:(:(:(

it really is inconceivable that a boy this age would be capable of such a thing . it is also scary because something like this couldn't of been forseen .

I wasn't insulting the kid. I was responding to someone calling him ******ed.

Where's the usual "people that commite suicide are selfish ******s" crowd?

This is a sad story. I was watching the news about it. Poor kid.

This is incredibly sad. I actually knew someone back in elementary who committed suicide with his fathers gun. This kid was only in fifth grade too. What a tragedy. I agree that he probably didn't fully understand what it he was going to do to himself. At that age death just isn't something you think of much, and so he probably didn't realize the gravity of the situation he was getting himself into.

Oh my, that is just heart breaking to read. This is one of those stories that once you read it, you want to just go hug your kids or younger siblings..just to be thankful you still have them.

Now to imply anything harsh, but I'm wondering if he was thinking that by doing this he would be with his mom and grandfather in Heaven. You never know. Just devastating.:csad:
