85th Annual Academy Awards (2013)

Out of the big Oscar heavy-hitters, I have seen Silver Linings Playbook, Argo and The Master. Argo is an astounding film and deserves whatever nominations come its way. Silver Linings Playbook is a great little feel-good film as well that has some excellent performances but lacks the sense of urgency and poignancy of Argo. The Master, although featuring absolutely towering and superlative performance by Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman, for all its abstract brilliance, is perhaps too radical and too experimental to achieve wide mainstream recognition. It will be studied and discussed in film schools more than perhaps all of this year's awards nominees combined, but it won't be walking away with many (if any at all) big prizes because it is a purebred art-house film.

The one I am rooting for, however, is Life of Pi. Ang Lee's latest is a sublime piece of cinematic work that is as beautiful beneath the surface as it is to look at. It is so vibrant and so impeccably framed that it is an absolute joy to behold. Skyfall has some truly nice and stylish cinematography, but Life of Pi is simply drop-dead gorgeous and if I might add, the only 3D film I've ever seen that made a convincing case to me for the medium. The plot, although not complex, has remarkable depth and is absolutely rife with philosophical and spiritual subtext. It has so much heart and emotion that on more than one occasion, it will really tug at the heartstrings. It may appear to lean towards a more religious demographic, but it is surprisingly a more open-ended film than you might expect. On my way back from the cinema, my conversation with friends alone ended up in three different interpretations of the story. We hadn't had such a lively discussion about the a film and the outcomes in its story since Memento, and that is no small praise. Life of Pi is not only my favorite film this year, it safely ranks amongst the best films I've ever seen.

Where are these societies coming from? "The Detroit Film critics society"? I swear there's like a million of them now when there's like two that matter.

None of them matters TBH. Bullock didn't even win one of these and she swept everything at the televised awards. Natalie Portman got snubbed completely for all the major critic awards and swept in a landslide.

Interesting. I always used to think that Taiwan and China were like Pakistan and India - politically different because of their secession but still socially and culturally identical. Anyways, thanks for the correction.
