91st Annual Academy Awards

The Favourite to this point I think was the best of the Oscar favorites that I saw. But I haven't seen a few of the probable contenders.

It's pretty difficult to see them all when they don't play anywhere :/

Yea, The Favourite and Green Book never played around here. Neither did Destroyer, and Boy Erased played for like two days.

I cant take this Oscar season seriously or get excited about it. Green Book is a pleasant and well intentioned movie made by people who at worst said awful stuff and director who played a stupid gross prank 20 years ago. AND THAT gets the outrage when something made by Bryan Singer just won Best Picture golden globe.

So Twitter isn't outraged?

Pages back a member pointed out how grown adults were berating a teen for liking BR.

Was that a contained incident? Really confused...

Was going to say - um, yeah they do... Then again, that'd likely be just due to having the privilege of always living in well known towns and cities. "Fly over" areas really have zero access?

Even Chicago, one of the largest cities in the country can be very slow to get a lot of the limited releases.

Many films never play St. Louis at all although there's been a great amount of improvement on that front in the last few years.

It varies. I live in Indiana but commute to Chicago for work and while a lot of theatres get some of the flicks, a lot of limited releases are only available in NY and LA and you get that "opening everywhere weeks later" shirt.

Typically limited-limited is NYC, LA, and these days VOD to expand reach. These films typically aren't considered for awards though.

Films with big name actors that can draw in a buck, especially if they're considered for awards, start limited then open wide (sometimes suddenly, other times on a week by week expanding basis (which would require one to mark it off on their calendar and these films typically have websites which can tell you the release schedule months in advance)). Personally, I can't think of one Academy Awards film this year - or one considered for it - where that wasn't the case unless it's a foreign film.

That said, I can easily see these films not getting into towns without big or notable cities - "drive by" towns due to having few theaters around and needing the most money possible, which would mean the more commercially over artistically viable.

You can't expect America to watch a show about movies they have never heard of and had no real chance to see (or, in some cases, were never promoted to). I'm not suggesting that they nominate bad, popular movies (there is no superhero movie that makes my top 5 of the year, and I haven't even seen any of the Oscar frontrunners) but they need to find a way to cater to the general audience. Move a bunch of the obscure categories to the untelevised show...hype up a trailer debut or make some major announcement etc. Personally, I'd love it if all the Oscar movies were to be placed on Netflix leading up to the show so I could actually pick a favorite.

Holding out hope for some noms for A Quite Place, Hereditary and Suspiria tomorrow morning. Would love to see horror films get some love.

Everyone's outraged over everything these days. We don't deserve anything. We don't deserve entertainment :p .

A liberal democrat American astronaut got shouted down on social media for quoting Winston Churchill and was bullied into apologizing.

I only need to see 2 BP noms. I saw all of them except Roma and Blackkklansman

I'm shocked AMPAS cooled it with shamelessness and Panther ain't even there in VFX

Poor Cooper. Maybe he will sympathy his way to Best Actor like Affleck did when he was 'snubbed' for Argo

Black Panther’s effects weren’t that great. But I didn’t think Solo’s were that great either.

BP did get a nomination for production design, which I think was a more fitting nom than VFX. The production design was great, just the CGI was a little cheap-looking.
