Will we ever see a re-start of either Batman or Superman? A new "issue #1?" A re-telling of their origins? A completely re-launched series?

Continuity is all over the place, both series have had things that we would all like to forget about - when are we going to get a modern restart for DC's finest heroes?

Am I alone in wanting this? Do you think it will ever happen?

You're not alone in wanting this. I'd like to see a reboot done to the entire DC Universe

Batman, Superman, Detective Comics, and Action Comics will NEVER get relaunched. It's like comic book law to not cancel something that has over 650 issues.

Who knows, I would say its impossible but seriously a restart?

The issue # is pretty meaningless. They will not reboot the dc universe any time soon. Why?
They've done too much. Reboot means that everything thats happened was for nothing. But thats your consequence of having a continuing story. You dont get the final big bad.

Well they did reboot Superman and restasart/renumber Superman at number 1.

Geoff Johns is doing that Superman: Secret Origins.

Not really. They just simply changed the title of Superman to Adventures of Superman and launched a new Superman book to fill John Byrne's ego. And guess what, they decided to cancel that book eventually and have Adventures of Superman go back the way it should have always been with just Superman.

Geoff Johns is doing that Superman: Secret Origins.

But it's not a revamp of Superman continuity like John Byrne's Superman. It's just another retelling of Superman's origin because Infinite Crisis invalidated Mark Waid's Birthright and the status-quo that Geoff Johns set up raised some serious questions on Superman's origins.

Frankly I see no need to completely relaunch the DC Universe. Even Crisis on Infinite Earths didn't do that. I don't want to see it go back with Dick Grayson as Robin, Wally West as Kid Flash, no Kyle Rayner at all and whatnot. They should just simply update some of the heroes origins like Wonder Woman (since the Perez reboot has essentially been done away with) and Barry Allen (similar to Hal Jordan's updated origin).

There's no need to reboot any franchise at the moment.
I like where the Superman books are at the moment, and the continuity issue isn't that big of a deal. In fact, right now would be a great time to jump on since everything is settling in post-New Krypton.
It's not like you NEED to read the past decades worth of comics to be able to read what's going on now. All you need to know is what's happend with New Krypton and as you start coming across things you don't know, just hit up Wikipedia.
Wikipedia is quite possibly the best tool for comic readers and helped me heaps when I started reading.

Same goes for the Batman books, or will once Battle for the Cowl finishes.

personally i always felt Detective Comics and Action Comics should have ended when Batman #1 and Superman #1 came, but thats just me. as far as restarting the DCU, part of me would like to be able to have every character having ONE origin and one streamline continuity, but invalidating the passed 70+ years of history would be pretty dumb.

Yeah but it will kinda become canon, because that apparently happens with all that Geoff writes.

It will be canon, but it's not a reboot of Superman.
I don't get how it's not a reboot. Superman's continuity is drastically different now from what it was before Infinite Crisis and Johns' Superman origin is going to tell us exactly how. Sounds like a reboot to me. Maybe a softer reboot than the one we got from CoIE, but a reboot nonetheless.

That said, I hope they never reboot the actual comics. I like having Action, Detective, Batman, and Superman at absurdly high numbers. The characters have been around as long as modern superhero comics; show that with their issue numbers.

Well, given all the upheaval in the DC universe from Infinite Crisis and 52, we probably do. It does seem a little self-indulgent, though.
