EXCLUSIVE: Netflix’s A Different Worldspinoff pilot has cast 8 in leading roles. They are Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah, Cornell Young as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, Alijah Kai Higgins as Haggins, and Kennedi McClure as Hazel, Deadline has learned.

Netflix declined to comment.

As Deadline reported previously, the streamer will shoot a pilot for A Different World, a sequel to the 1987 sitcom, which will chronicle Dwayne and Whitley’s daughter’s time at an HBCU. The project had been in development at the streamer since last year, and the commissioning of the pilot is part of that process.

The pilot is a one-off and not part of a strategy shift, sources said. The pilot model in general is more often employed in comedy as a proof of concept for tone, chemistry among the ensemble cast, comedic timing and other key ingredients of a successful series.

The Different World sequel comes from writer/executive producer Felicia Pride and executive producers Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Bythewood. Allen, Werner, Prince-Bythewood and Bythewood all worked on the original multi-camera series, a spinoff of The Cosby Show, which ran on NBC for six seasons with Carsey-Werner producing.

spinoffception (inception sound)

LOL.

It has Debbie Allen and the host of other original producers, so I have hope.

The 80s and 90s were a strange time in TV. I remember how this show was meant to be a star vehicle for Lisa Bonet, and then she immediately jumped ship and they built the show around Whitley and Dwayne (and it got better). Same thing happened with Valerie/The Hogan Family after Valerie Harper got canned because they didn’t want to pay her. And then there was the whole NYPD thing where Caruso either left or got canned after the first season. It’s amazing how quickly shows were willing to move on from their lead star in like season 2 or 3.

Wasn't Lisa Bonet because she got pregnant by Lenny Kravitz and Bill Cosby said she violated her morality clause in her contract so she got fired from both shows?

Whoa really? I don’t know but that doesn’t surprise me, knowing what a POS Cosby is.
