I actually really want it. I’ve always loved the books and was consistently underwhelmed by the movies especially Order of the Phoenix.

If anything, a TV series would allow more time to flesh out portions from the books that were either abridged or had to be skipped outright in the movies for the sake of a runtime.

So far, no actors have been officially cast in theHarry Potter series, which is aiming for a 2026 debut, although Bridge of Spies actor Mark Rylance is close to being signed for the critical role of the wise and powerful Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. The show is hot enough to conjure up several actor rumors, although the ones summoning Cillian Murphy for the role of Lord Voldemort are not correct, sources add.

Honestly, even if JKR kicked the bucket tomorrow (fingers crossed, but given the state of things, she’ll probably stick around for another 50 years), there would still be the question of if this should even be made, but… at the very least, the news updates should make for interesting reading.

I think you could probably do a fun adaptation of the books that contains a lot of the neat stuff the movies couldn't get to and honestly probably improve on the books in a lot of ways. But that's not an adaptation that would ever get made and the situation Is What It Is.

I had forgotten Williams scored the first 3 films. That explains why the HP theme is so catchy.

Putting aside the obvious glaring issue of who JKR has become, I do think there is an opportunity for a more comprehensive adaptation of the series than the films were allowed to be, BUT… it’s just too soon for something that made such a strong impression.

Taking another crack at the His Dark Materials books made all the sense in the world because the movie that got made didn’t do anything for anybody. A Percy Jackson series makes sense because the author disliked the movies (and I would imagine that much of the fanbase felt the same). The HP films were, and continue to be, BIG.

I feel like the only reason this is happening is because Fantastic Beasts proved that interest in any spin-off attempts would quickly wane, and the main HP (at least presently) don’t have any interest in a comeback. So what else is there to do with a cash-cow franchise other than just… doing it all over again?

And then you add in the fun that they can't meaningfully do anything that different with the iconography because that iconography nets them so much money in merchandise and theme parks because people really like those movies.

Given how the trio have spoken out about her views, don't underestimate spite being part of JKR's motivations for allowing this to happen.
