So huge Batman fan here but my life has been really busy the last few years and I have been really poor and even before this time in my life I did miss a few things. I would like to ask for a few things:

1. What books would you put on an absolutley essential reading list for Batman (exluding the books I already have)?

2. What book do I need to read to help further my knowledge on:
What Led Dick to become Nightwing and turn his back on Batman?

In Infinate Crisis why does Batman ask if in the other world Dick is a better person why is Batman saying that Dick is a bad person?

Books I already have

Batman Year One
Long Halloween
Knight Fall
No Mans Land
Hush
Broken City
War Drums

Help would be apreciated I am just looking to catch up and catch any thing that I have missed.

Just subscribing because I too wanna get into Batman, but it's titles are issues 600+ and what not. I think I'd get lost.

Well Im not really looking for single issue comics I want the big storys the kinds that they release in graphic novels. I really want to catch up on the things I have missed I just reacently bought some newer comics and I am just completely lost.

I'd put Dark Victory, The Killing Joke, and The Dark Knight Returns on your list of Batman books to read.

As for #2, I asked that particular question recently, and there are like 3 books that tell that story, Nightwing Year One probably having the most precedent.

Oh okay, you're in for a different reason. But, I hope someone can lead a newcomer such as I into a good direction for getting into Batman.

I have wanted to read The Kililng Joke for a long time but can't find it.

I don't own the Dark Knight returns but I have read it I am not a huge fan of it

I will read Night Wing Year one but I am hopeing for some Batman books that introduce the growing problems and ultimatley the and of the closness between Batman and Robin (dick)

It's a part of the Alan Moore DC Universe Stories TPB, at the end. I went to a Borders and spent about 20 minutes to get through it.

I haven't read it, but I'm pretty sure it IS the story of Dick leaving Bruce and taking the mantle of Nightwing. There's a Batman book called Did Robin Die Tonight, which apparently tells the same story. And like I said, I don't know which is more 'official'. Probably NYO.

It sounds like the one that im looking for is Did Robin Die tonigh. Because I havn't read much with Todd and I really want that one and I want the story he dies in to. I don't care to much about NightWing I just wanted to know what made him leave and be nightwing beyond that I don't care about him.

then read night one year later. thats the styory that tells you why dick left. everyone on here will tell ya the samething.

You won't, the new arc has just started. It's titled Batman and Son

You should also try Detective Comics. Written by Paul Dini from Batman the Animated series fame with art by the great J.H. WIlliams.

the last arc in batman/dective comics was good. It was called face to face which I believe is coming out sometime in tpb this august.
Arkham Asylum is good trippy but good.
Batman Venom the premise is pretty good some dialouge is weak though.
A Death in the Family.
Batman: Son of the Demon
and
Batman: Year One

Thanks for giving me some suggested readings lol that mostly what I want. I just want to know what people think are important to the legacy of Batman I am looking for more stories like the ones I already own jus things that effect the people over all and most of the ones I own do that except Broken City which just sucked.

I don't care what the titles are as long as it is a Batman book that is all that matters.

What would you say are the most important ones to read that I don't already have listed oh and exlude The Dark Night Returns I have read it just don't own it

I was responding to Toya, but you've pretty much read everything good from the Bat within the last few years.

There's Bruce Wayne Murderer/Fugitive. I felt that was one of those events that were best read all together and were under appreciated when it was originally published.

Then there's War Games....A lot of people didn't like, I thought it was okay. You liked No Man's Land, then you might like that one as well.

There was also Dan Slott's Arkham Asylum: Living Hell. Not to be confused with Morrison/McKean's Arkham book.

Thanks

Also the books don't have to be widley considered good but if they effect charecters, change them in some way or even if they are an important part to the overal story.

For instance some people may not like War Games but Stephine died in war games and I think that is an important event.

You should on account that some Batman books are just plain crap, like Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Nightwing, and All-Star Batman and Robin: The Boy Wonder, while others such as Batman and Detective Comics are completely awesome.

Certain Runs of course. Nightwing, now sucks, but it didn't always. And it wont when Wolfman comes on at 125 either. As far as All-Star Bats?.....I got nothing.

Sorry I should of been more clear. I don't care what title it is just as long as it is a Batman book of at least some minor importance. For instance I don't know if you have read Broken City but it was pretty crappy and didn't really do anything. If charecters are effected if an important even happend then I want it.

Long Halloween - We Get Two Face
Knight Fall- We Get Baine and batman breaks his back
No Mans Land- Gothen turns in to hell and we get a new batgirl and various other things.
Hush - Two Face is no more just Dent
War Drums - We get the introduction of a new Robin sort of oh and some other things but im tired and it's getting harder to think lol

Hmm...

Dark Knight Returns of course, the model for the modern Batman.

the collection that puts together Detective 498-500 (forgot its name) - the first appearance of Henri Ducard and really delves into Wayne's past as he trained to become Batman.

Batman: Year Two is ok for me - Batman with a gun.

Among non Bat-universe books: try JLA: Tower of Babel - Ra's Al Ghul, Batman's extreme methods and his fallout with the JLA because of it.

There's the Zero Hour Robin issue where Tim Drake Robin meets Dick Grayson Robin. I think it's essential because it clearly shows the difference between the two Robins.

Batman: Black and White has one of the best stories written for Batman - An Innocent Guy, drawn by Brian Bolland. Not essential, just a good read.

Thanks I will be looking for these all of them even the JLA one I would like to see what caused the fall out.

I collected early LODK - up to #50. It had a good run. One of the best all-time stories for Batman for me in LODK was Gothic by Grant Morrison. If you want Batman as a pure horror story throwback, that's probably the story I'd go with.

LODK #50 also details Joker first appearance. Retconned (I think).

All-Star B&R sucks.

Thanks guys. I'll pick up one book(No Man's Land sounds interesting) and a single issue(Detective) tommorrow.

Still can't find the Superman Identity Crisis...argh.
